About this listing
A whole floor in a fascinating old distillery & malting complex - a calm oasis within an old industrial area now home to art galleries, fashion houses and creative startups. Minutes from vibrant Gertrude & Smith Sts and a lovely walk through parks to the CBD.
Our apartment is part of a fascinating old red brick brewery complex built in 1862 - when Melbourne was 25 years old! It's an amazing oasis in the middle of an old industrial/brewery area now mainly occupied by architects, art galleries, graphic studios and fashion outlets. Although only minutes from vibrant Smith, Gertrude and Brunswick Sts the area is surprisingly peaceful. Your space has its own private door onto one of Collingwood's funky graffiti covered lanes which features a new cafe, artist run gallery and neon artworks glowing night. It would suit a couple or two single people.
You have use of the whole ground floor consisting of gallery, bedroom, study/kitchenette & bathroom. At one end of the gallery is your own private bathroom with toilet, basin and shower. At the other end the bedroom contains a super comfortable queen bed, WiFi, TV and small sitting area overlooking a leafy internal light well. An air conditioner for winter heating/summer cooling as well as fans & electric blankets. A separate office opens off the bedroom with a desk, a eclectic collection of books, (old) iPad and (older) iMac you are very welcome to use. This extra room would suit independent guests and would be very useful if you need somewhere to work. There's a single bed on a mezzanine level in the office (no door between the rooms but the beds are well out of sight), a small refrigerator, kettle, microwave, toaster, tea/coffee & breakfast cereals, milk, spreads etc. You can also use our kitchen upstairs to prepare meals and may like to have breakfast in the morning sun on the upstairs terrace overlooking the lane way.
Interaction with Guests
Mercedes and I are always happy to give local advice and help you make the most of your visit. We often enjoy sharing stories with guests but of course you can come and go just as you please - either by the front door or the door in your room. We won't bother you however if you have a query, or feel in need of a chat, we'd be delighted to oblige. We are generally around.
Vibrant Smith, Gertrude and Brunswick Steets offer funky shopping, art, food and fashion and are just a short walk away. There are also many interesting cafes and shops to explore in the Collingwood industrial back streets, e.g. the Lemon, Middle and Orange cafe just outside your back door.
Melbourne CBD is a lovely 10 min tram ride, or a 20 minute stroll through the magnificent Fitzroy and Treasury gardens or along Gertrude St past the Carlton gardens/Exhibition Building/Melbourne Museum. The MCG and Tennis Stadiums are an easy walk and beyond that the Botanical Gardens and National Gallery. There are many hospitals (St Vincents, Freemasons, Epworth, Eye & Ear) and universities (Melbourne Uni, RMIT, ACU) nearby. An interesting walk through beautiful East Melbourne takes you to the Bridge Rd fashion outlets. The Vietnamese quarter is close by along Victoria Pde.
Amazingly, the bushland of Yarra bend national park is less than 20 minutes walk, a further stroll along the river to the Children's Farm & Abbotsford Convent arts hub, cafes & bakery. On booking we'll send a link to our online magazine with pointers to sometimes less obvious places that we love.
It's very easy to get here. Southern Cross Station (and the Airport Express Bus Terminal) are a 20 min direct tram plus 5 min walk. We are easily accessed by car from the Eastern or Monash Freeways and can provide a visitor's parking permit for 24 hour street parking.
Public transport is minutes away with a choice of two trams to the city via Gertrude St or Victoria St, loads of buses and North Richmond train station. Direct trams to St Kilda, St Kilda Beach, Port Melbourne & Docklands. We can lend you Myki cards for your stay.
A supermarket, bottle shop and all manner of fascinating shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants are all within easy walking distance.
Other Things to Note
We are happy to run a load of washing for you or lend you an iron & ironing board if required.
Our living room upstairs is connected to the gallery so we ask you to be quiet in this area when we're at home.
Please keep the kitchen and gallery clean after use as these are shared areas.
No smoking inside the building but you can in the courtyard or back lane.
You a very welcome to explore our rather eclectic book collection - just put books back where you find them.
Please let us know beforehand if you intend to bring other people into our home.
Paul and Mercedes are definitely one of the best hosts in airbnb. They have got everything as very well prepared for us, including local maps with highlights of nice café, beautiful walks, local transport card (myski card) and light breakfast.
We were quite surprised by their beautiful house and wonderful decorations, including all different sorts of exquisite crafts. Wording expression is obviously not enough to describe it. I have never thought in my life that a house can be an art gallery at same time.
I will definitely highly recommend it and thank you Paul and Mercedes so much for an wonderful trip.
We absolutely loved staying with Paul and Mercedes. They have such a beautiful home and in such proximity to the city. While we did not get a chance to meet Mercedes, Paul was very kind an accommodating, taking time to explain the best ways to get around and recommending places to eat and drink. I highly recommend this listing.
I stayed here with a friend while visiting Melbourne for the big soccer match. Felt very welcome here and was well informed about the surrounding area and Melbourne by Mercedes.
Room: exactly as advertised - quiet, clean, comfortable, warm, and private, one large bed, and another bed in a loft-style space. It has the little extras that are always handy like cups, plates, bowels, cutlery, tea, a kettle, microwave, iron & ironing board etc.
The room also has its own entrance from the side of the property which is really convenient.
Location: There's a tram stop about 300m away but I opted to walk everywhere - mainly around Collingwood, Fitzroy, the CBD, and the MCG. If you enjoy walking then this place is located well enough for you to go everywhere by foot.
Eating options: There's a terrific breakfast place about 50m away and scores of bars and restaurants on Smith Street which is a 5 min walk.
I have to say this is very highly recommended!
My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful time staying with Paul and Mercedes. Not only is their home beautiful and in a great location, but they went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The room is spacious and very well-furnished amd comfortable. Also, it was our first time in Melbourne and they had tons of information and advice on hand on where to go, what to do, and how to get there. We could not have asked for a better time and are only sad that we couldn't spend more time there. We would definitely stay again!
I felt very comfortable from my first contact with Paul and Mercedes and was very warmly welcomed on my arrival. Their communication at every point was excellent and every query answered promptly. Everything about the accommodation was warm, comfortable, quiet and private and in close proximity to the vibrancy of Collingwood and Fitzroy. Great to have a cafe almost at the back door literally a minute's walk away. Paul and Mercedes were happy to engage whilst at the same time not imposing if I desired privacy. I would have no hesitation and would love to stay with them again.
Excellent choice this was our first AirBNB booking. I would highly recommend this place to everyone. Although the old iMac was apparently broken they had put an iPad into our rooms. Wireless access seemed good to us (although a reminder that we are lucky at home to have fibre to the house NBN). Close to things (ie we walked to the city as well as to Collingwood's Smith and Gertrude St's ). We also found the coffee shops/eateries that Paul & Mercedes have listed as recommended were very good although we did not try them all. All up the only criticism I can come up with is that the TV in our room couldn't get SBS - Paul is aware of this and I suspect it will be fixed shortly. Also worth note is the very good museli that they have for breakfasts.
The final word I suppose is that we would very happily stay there again.
Paul and Mercedes made us feel very welcome in their beautiful home. Great location, always on hand for advice and very friendly.
