Colorful Riad next to spices souk4

House - Private room · Derb Tarjane, Marrakesh, Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz, Morocco

The Space

Riad Essaadaqa (Riad Friendship, in English) is tucked away in a quiet residential neighbourhood but still minutes away from the life of the souks, the vibrant Jema El Fna square and important monuments and attractions.
The Riad has three floors plus the terrace. The ground floor has a small lounge area around the courtyard and one double bedroom with private bathroom as well as a public WC. The middle floors has the remaining three bedrooms (only one without private bathroom) a storage room and one public WC. The third floor is where you will find the kitchen, living room and one public complete bathroom for usage of the guests. The terrace disposes of tables and chairs for breakfast and other meals, a lounge shaded area and chaises-longue for sunbathing. In winter, the central opening (typical feature of Moroccan Riads) is covered to protect from rain and cold.
The decoration is a concentrate of different Moroccan crafts and cultural activities, mixing colours, techniques and materials. Guests should expect clean, comfortable, simple accommodation and a quiet environment. Breakfast is included in the price and is served where the guest desires.
At the entrance of the neighbourhood there are groceries shops for immediate needs. At the spice’s square nearby there are several small cafés and restaurants and more dining options are available at the Jema El Fna square which is within 10min walking distance. The neighbourhood is a good starting point to explore the souks, visit the Madrasa Ben Youssef, Museum of Marrakech, Qoubba Almoravid and Photography Museum. Other attractions like Museum Dar Si Said, Bahia Palace and Badii Palace are also within walking distance.
To move around Marrakech, the Jema el Fna Square is the best place to get a taxi or take a city bus as well as to park your car (several car parking facilities nearby).
We are able to organize day excursions to nearby places like the Ourika Valley, Ouzoud waterfalls and Essaouira and also longer ones to the Desert (Zagora or Merzouga).

  • This is a nice house near (not next to) the spices souk. Though the bedroom was small, the living room and terrace are very nice and there is plenty of room there. We actually had the place to ourselves, which was fine. Jawad was busy, so we only had a few minutes to chat, but he kindly arranged a pick up at the airport and assistance getting to the riad.

The birds or rooster will wake you up in the morning, but it's all just part of the ambiance!

  • We stayed for a total of 3 nights with Jawad - he is a great host, friendly, welcoming and helpful, and the riad is clean and well-equipped with beautiful rooms. Jawad came and met us at the spices souk to show us the way to the riad and was always contactable by mobile for any queries. A lovely riad which I would highly recommend to my friends and family visiting Marrakesh.

  • Jawad is very personable and helpful, speaks great English. His cousin serving the breakfasts is nice and polite too. But the "riad" is more of a guesthouse and the photos are a bit deceiving as the rooms are small and the place is not overlooking the spice market as one of the photos would lead you to believe but about 200 meters back past a few drunks, stray cats and garbage cans (the latter two are standard for Morocco) Still we enjoyed the terrace and being the only ones there. As for out of guesthouse activities, be careful if he arranges trips for you as we later (after a few days) found the trips he arranged for us either not matching the description (3 day desert trip is more like 2 days driving through pre desert) or severely overpriced with lots of expected tips to the people selling things or giving tours at the places he took us to.

    Response from Jawad:

Most of the "Riads" open to the public are guesthouses and the term is used, in Morocco, to refer to any type of house built around a central courtyard, guesthouse or not.
I agree the photos can be somewhat deceiving although is not an exclusive problem of my listings but of the Airbnb photographers who always make it look bigger and brighter than what it truly is. I, as well as other hosts that I know on Airbnb, have already addressed this issue to Airbnb.
Also, on the photo that could lead somebody to think the Riad overlooks the Spices market, it is written that the view is from the terrace of Café des Épices, which is an important bit of information that went unchecked.
As for the trips, I feel I was clear explaining how long they would take, what was included or not and the general itinerary for each and I was surprised to see such a big misunderstanding as I thought the guest had understood it too. Clearly not the case which means extra effort should be put in making sure the guest does not build the wrong expectations about any type of service.

  • Beautiful Riad with lovely staff. Jawad is an upbeat young man who is happy to help with anything. I would recommend the airport pick-up, although the 150 Dirham that we paid, was too much. Because of all the tiny streets from the big square to the riad, we were lucky to have had someone lead us the way. Overall a very pleasant stay! Clean rooms, good service and friendly staff!

  • The stay in Jawads beautiful Riad was just perfect.....
We had big blankets and a heating for the cold marrocian winter nights and always a pretty nice breakfast on his terrasse, which has an amazing view over Marracesch...he organised a good, reliable Saharatour with nice tourguides.
He and his cousin really cared about us and also also we had our privacy....
We could always let our stuff in his place when we were away for some days.
So all in all we can highly recommend Jawads Riad. Go and have a good time!
