About This Listing
Enter a magical garden, full of tropical fruit and flowers.
Hear the voice of the river, the flap of butterfly wings. Explore beautiful Bali.
Sleep deeply after your exciting day. Wake refreshed - ready for pancakes or spicy omelettes.
Rumah Jepun is a calm oasis - right in the middle of town.
Our three double rooms, 'Secluded Haven', 'Hidden Riverside Gem' and the brand new, deluxe 'Waterfall Room' (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3734096), are all en-suite with private balconies overlooking a delightfully lush tropical garden.
They offer a blend of modern facilities merged with traditional touches... beautiful hand-carved Balinese doors, brightly coloured furnishings and modern bathrooms.
The rooms are non-smoking and our daily housekeeping includes fresh flowers.
You walk down steps of the leaf-imprinted pathway, embedded with words such as 'harmony' and 'gratitude' to your room on the ground floor.
You can stroll past banana and papaya trees, jepun and hibiscus flowers, chili and aloe vera plants as you walk down to the river at the bottom of the garden.
Sit on the bale (gazebo) with a cup of coffee and a book, or your laptop. It's a great place to meditate to the sound of the river and we can even arrange an outdoor massage there for you, or provide you a mat for yoga under warm Balinese skies.
Although Rumah Jepun is set in a quiet and tranquil garden it's only 2 mins walk to the many shops, cafes, bars and spas along the busy Monkey Forest Road.
If this room isn't available try its sister rooms: the Hidden Riverside Gem: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/757039
or the deluxe Waterfall Room: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3734096
Note: all three rooms at Rumah Jepun are ideal for singles, couples or two friends who are happy to share a double room.
Your en-suite room comes with free wifi, aircon and a private balcony which overlooks the garden.
Lay on a sunbed or chill out in the bale (a thatched gazebo) next to the river.
Drinking water is freely available and our housekeeper will also make you a choice of breakfasts, plus tea and coffee during the day.
In your wardrobe is a box of 8 items that might come in handy during your stay at Rumah Jepun:
A torch (sometimes there are power cuts in Ubud)
A book to read (“A Taste of Bali” and “Life’s Journeys” both feature my poems)
A pack of cards
A fan(it gets hot in Bali)
A mosquito spray
A stip – otherwise known as a catapult. You see, occasionally we get monkeys visiting Rumah Jepun. To scare them off, harmlessly, simply ‘ping’ the empty catapult at them!
An iron and ironing board, an electric fan, an extra pillow or weighing scales are also available - just ask.
Interaction with Guests
Our friendly, live-in staff, Gede and Kadek (who you can see in the photos), will greet you and offer a welcome drink. If we know your arrival time they can also help to bring your bags from the street to your room.
I'm usually here to welcome you too and can answer any queries and have a chat about Bali and its unique culture.
Some guests have even joined me for a meal, drink or a night-out dancing at Yaniq's gig (my Balinese partner). You can also see, or even buy, Yaniq's unique artwork which decorates the walls at Rumah Jepun.
We are looking forward to welcoming you in the Lotus View Room at Rumah Jepun - the home of a poet (published in 'A Taste of Bali' and 'Life's Journeys').
Ubud oozes with culture, scenery, temples, spas, art museums, meditation, alternative therapies, adventure, great shopping for handicrafts and many yoga studios - even the famous yoga barn is only 15 mins walk away.
This is topped off with a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, traditional performances and great live music.
And if you're vegetarian, vegan or a raw food lover then you'll be spoilt for choice in Ubud.
The folder in your room gives lots of ideas and you can ask me for more details.
We're right in the middle of Ubud.
The monkey forest, with hundreds of monkeys, is less than 10 mins walk away. The market and palace are easy walking distance at the other end of the Monkey Forest Road.
A map of Ubud is in the folder in your room and we can help you book transport to take you further afield to visit temples, rice terraces, the volcano or the beach.
We can also arrange an airport pick-up, just give us your flight details.
Other Things to Note
Bali is a tropical island so the weather tends to be warm, to hot, all year round, frequently reaching 30 deg c.
So you might want to cool off in our neighbouring hotel's swimming pool for a small fee, alternatively the nearest beach is only about an hour away.
The volcano is approximately an hour away too - in the opposite direction! Maybe you want to go to the hot springs there?
Hey, why not get your phone unlocked before you come to Bali - that way you can get a cheap sim card here and be able to contact us should you need help/advice while out and about.
Check in - is usually 2pm but if you arrive early we can store your bags.
Check out - is usually 12 noon but if you need us to store your bags for a while that is fine.
Rooms are non-smoking (nor candles or incense), but you are welcome to smoke on your private balcony.
This accommodation is not suitable for children, babies or people who have difficulty walking down steps.
In the unlikely event of fire/emergency please gather in the garden at Rumah Kita (last house along the pathway on the right).
A recommander! Nous nous sentions comme chez nous en plus d'être choyé
More detailed in french, but just in few words, very nice stay, convenient because in the centre of Ubud, but really quiet.
Good room, wonderfull garden... And a great host!
My experience at Rumah Jepun was superb in every way. Communication, arrival, accommodations, breakfast, location were all stellar. What is most special about this lovely Ubud stay are the people that run it. Julie and staff are extremely helpful and kind, making a visitor feel happy, safe and welcomed with the genuine Bali spirit that one hopes to find in this beautiful place. I highly recommend this gorgeous locale for anyone looking for a peaceful spot call 'home' for a stay in Ubud. I hope to return time and time again! Thank you Julie, Pasek and everyone at Rumah Jepun!
Beautiful setting in ideal location along Monkey Forest Road.
We stayed in Rumah Jepun for 10 days/9 nights during our first visit to Bali. Rumah Jepun is a very well maintained home, garden and surroundings, with hand-selected Balinese decor and with a very cordial host and an excellent staff. It is ideally located right on Monkey Forest Road, close to everything, and yet set back away from the street, giving you the feeling that you in a secluded resort. Our booking included a hot, freshly prepared choice of breakfast items along with tea/coffee/juices, which was promptly served every morning and which we enjoyed on the verandah of our room with a view of the beautiful tropical garden. The room was very clean and maintained well, and someone from the staff was around all the time if we needed anything. Bali celebrated Neypi (Silent Day) when we were visiting there. On this day the entire country comes to a halt with no cooking, no working, no stores, no restaurants and no one on the streets. Julie out host has written to us about this in advance and on Neypi, the guests at Rumah Jepun were provided breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared by the staff. We appreciated these very much. Compared to other places in Ubud, Bali, Rumah Jepun was a good value for money. I would recommend it to my friends and would come back and stay there if I am back in Ubud.
Rumah Jepun is a little heaven on earth. The garden is absolutely stunning (papaya, pineapple, lemon, aloe, jepun, etc as I was there at the end of rainy season) and Julie is the most caring and friendly air bnb host I met so far. She was so helpful, gave me a tour through the garden, explaining balinese culture and language. She also gave us tips what to do around Ubud and had a neat folder prepared with all the information as well ... just wonderful. If you have a chance to stay there, do it.

About the Host, Pasek
Pasek and the Rumah Jepun team are looking forward to welcoming you.
We hope you'll experience Balinese culture, enjoy delicious Balinese food, marvel at nature's beauty, unique architecture and temples and be fascinated and inspired by this enchanting tropical island.
It's inspiration like this that has turned guests into poets, authors, singer/songwriters and artists.
Talking of art... you'll see artwork on the walls of Rumah Jepun made by a Balinese singer/songwriter/artist called Yaniq.
You might meet him here too, as well as our staff Gede, Kadek and Ketut (who make great pancakes for breakfast!) and long term resident Julie.
Come and visit Ubud and experience the beauty and inspiration for yourself.
