The Space

A calm oasis, yet right in the middle of town...

A choice of two lovely double bedrooms, both with private balconies overlooking a delightfully lush tropical garden.

The Lotus View and River View offer a blend of modern facilities merged with traditional touches.

Beautiful hand-carved Balinese doors, brightly coloured furnishings, a wardrobe with plenty of coat hangers and western style en-suite bathrooms.

The rooms are non-smoking with daily housekeeping.

The garden is on three levels as it goes down to the river and its small waterfall. There are papaya and banana trees, jepun and hibiscus flowers, chili and aloe vera plants.

You walk down steps of the leaf-imprinted pathway, embedded with words such as 'harmony' and 'gratitude' to your room on the ground floor.

You can sit on the bale (gazebo) with a cup of coffee and a book, or your laptop. It's a great place to meditate and we can even arrange an outdoor massage there for you, or provide you a mat for yoga under warm Balinese skies.

Although Rumah Jepun is set in a quiet and tranquil garden it's only 2 mins walk to the many shops, cafes, bars and spas along the busy Monkey Forest Road.

If this room isn't available try its sister room, River View Room:

Note: the two rooms at Rumah Jepun are ideal for singles, couples or two friends who are happy to share a double room.

Guest Access

Your en-suite room comes with wifi, aircon and a private balcony which overlooks the garden.

Sun-loungers are available or you can chill out in the bale (a thatched gazebo) next to the river.

Drinking water is freely available and our housekeeper will also make you a choice of breakfasts, plus tea and coffee during the day.

Interaction with Guests

Our friendly, live-in staff will greet you and offer a welcome drink. If we know your arrival time they can also help to bring your bags from the street to your room.

I'm usually here to welcome you too and can answer any queries and have a chat about Bali and its unique culture.

Some guests have even joined me for a meal, drink or a night-out dancing at Yaniq's gig (my Balinese partner).

We are looking forward to welcoming you in the Lotus View Room at Rumah Jepun - the home of a poet (published in 'A Taste of Bali' and 'Life's Journeys').

The Neighborhood

Ubud oozes culture, scenery, temples, spas, art museums, meditation, alternative therapies, adventure, great shopping for handicrafts and even the yoga barn is less than 20 mins walk away.

This is topped off with a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, traditional performances and great live music.

The folder in your room gives lots of ideas and you can ask me for more details.

Getting around

We're right in the middle of Ubud.

The monkey forest, with hundreds of monkeys, is less than 10 mins walk away. The market and palace are easy walking distance at the other end of the Monkey Forest Road.

A map of Ubud is in the folder in your room and we can help you book a taxi to take you further afield to visit temples, rice terraces, the volcano or the beach.

We can also arrange an airport pick-up, just give us your flight details.

Other Things to Note

Bali is a tropical island so the weather tends to be warm, to hot, all year round, frequently reaching 30 deg c.

So you might want to cool off in our neighbouring hotel's swimming pool for a small fee, alternatively the nearest beach is only about an hour away.

The volcano is approximately an hour away too - in the opposite direction! Maybe you want to go to the hot springs there?

  • The rooms were clean and big. Aircon worked fine. The rooms were a few minutes walk from Monkey Forest Road so it was very convenient.

  • We had a nice stay at this lovely guesthouse, with a very perasonal feel to it. Not only were the rooms clean and comfortable, with good AC and wifi. Julie and the staff were also very friendly and helpful, giving very good advise for our daytrips.

  • We had a great stay at Julie's place! I highly recommend it. Julie and her staff were really friendly and helpful. They helped us arrange transport to the north coast and gave us tips on where to eat and what to see. There was always someone on hand to help us with whatever we needed, and I really feel that everyone there went above and beyond what was expected of them.

The place itself is also fantastic. It is really well located, it is only about a 1.5 minute walk from Monkey Forest Road, but it feels like you are staying outside the town as you only hear chirping birds, no traffic sounds at all! The building was built to fit in with Balinese style and is also part of the experience. Julie has made up a binder that includes a lot of information about Ubud, but with her personal recommendations, which really helped us planning our time there and was a nice touch.

The included breakfast was also nice. It had papaya grown right there in the yard and after asking for a second coffee on the first day we were always asked if we wanted another (little detail, but shows that the staff cares)

Overall a great experience, if you stay here you won't regret it!

  • Julie had her house build (by Pasek) in the middle of Ubud.
It is incredibly well located. You are 1 min walk from the Monkey forest street and it is very quiet in the midlle of a beautiful garden full of flowers and exotic plants.
You have a nice big room behind a traditional balinese door.
Your breakfast will be served every morning on your private "terrasse".
Julie is very helpful and can indicate you the good places to visit and the best way to go there, and also the bars to listen cool music.
You can do a lot from her home and Ubud is a very nice place to stay.
Stay a few days in her home to really enjoy Ubud.

  • This is a great place from which to explore downtown Ubud. You are mere meters from the Monkey Forest and a short walk to Jl. Monkey Forest - one of the main streets of Ubud. The house is set about 50 meters off the street so you get away from the bustle of Ubud while being in the middle of it.

The room is tastefully decorated and comfortable even for a spoiled westerner. It has A/C and wifi. The garden is beautiful - a great sight to wake up to. I enjoyed eating a tasty breakfast in the morning on the patio in this idyllic setting.

Julie is a friendly and helpful host (she lives upstairs). She found an American power adapter for me and helped arrange a taxi ride to my next hotel. She provides a homemade Ubud guidebook which is quite helpful. Julie has lived in Bali for about 5 years and has a genuine passion for the country and a wealth of knowledge about the local culture.

On the downside, this is a small guest house with only two rooms for rent. At the big resorts I enjoy meeting fellow travelers and you won't have as much opportunity for that here.

I recommend renting here if it fits what you are looking for.

  • This is a nice place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Julie and her staff are friendly, making you feel comfortable and at home. She's happy to share her knowledge of the local area and several places to enjoy a cheap meal and some entertainment. Julie will help organise a guided tour to Mt. Batur, the volcano. Thanks Julie, for a pleasant holiday.

The man in the photo is Pasek, he built the house on Ketut Astana's land and you are likely to meet him here... along with the friendly and helpful staff, Gede and Ketut (who can all make great pancakes!). Bali's people, culture, landscape and architecture fascinate and inspire me. The inspiration results in poetry - some poems have been published while others have been turned into lyrics for a Balinese songwriter. Come and visit Ubud and experience the beauty and inspiration for yourself. Bali - a place like no other.
