About This Listing
Enter a magical garden, full of tropical fruit and flowers.
Hear the voice of the river, the flap of butterfly wings. Explore beautiful Bali.
Sleep deeply after your exciting day. Wake refreshed - ready for pancakes or spicy omelettes.
Rumah Jepun is a calm oasis right in the middle of town and this room, called the 'Secluded Haven', is en-suite with a private balcony overlooking a delightfully lush tropical garden.
We offer a blend of modern facilities merged with traditional touches... a beautiful hand-carved Balinese door, brightly coloured furnishings and a modern bathroom.
The room is non-smoking and our daily housekeeping includes fresh flowers.
You walk down steps of the leaf-imprinted pathway, embedded with words such as 'harmony' and 'gratitude' to your room on the ground floor.
You can stroll past banana and papaya trees, jepun and hibiscus flowers, chili and aloe vera plants as you walk down to the river at the bottom of the garden.
Sit on the bale (gazebo) with a cup of coffee and a book, or your laptop. It's a great place to meditate to the sound of the river and we can even arrange an outdoor massage there for you, or provide a mat for yoga under warm Balinese skies.
Although Rumah Jepun is set in a quiet and tranquil garden it's only 2 mins walk to the many shops, cafes, bars and spas along the busy Monkey Forest Road.
If this room isn't available try its sister rooms: the Hidden Riverside Gem: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/757039
or the deluxe Rama Sita room: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3734096
Note: all three rooms at Rumah Jepun are ideal for singles, couples or two friends who are happy to share a double room.
Enjoy free wifi, aircon and a large private balcony overlooking the tropical garden.
You can lay on a sunbed or chill out in the bale (a thatched gazebo) next to the river.
Drinking water is freely available and our housekeeper will also make you a choice of breakfasts, plus tea and coffee during the day.
In your wardrobe is a box of 9 items that might come in handy:
A torch (sometimes there are power cuts in Bali)
A book to read (“A Taste of Bali” or “Life’s Journeys” - both feature my poems)
A Lonely Planet guide to Indonesia
A pack of cards
A fan (it gets hot in Bali)
A mosquito repellant
A stip – otherwise known as a catapult. You see, occasionally we get monkeys visiting Rumah Jepun. To scare them off, harmlessly, simply ‘ping’ the empty catapult at them!
An iron and ironing board, an electric fan, an extra pillow or weighing scales are also available - just ask!
Interaction with Guests
Our friendly, live-in staff, Gede and Kadek (who you can see in the photos), will greet you and offer a welcome drink. If we know your arrival time they can also help to bring your bags from the street to your room.
I'm usually here to welcome you too and can answer any queries and have a chat about Bali and its unique culture.
Some guests have even joined me for a meal, drink or a night-out dancing at Yaniq's gig (my Balinese partner). You can also see, or even buy, Yaniq's unique artwork which decorates the walls at Rumah Jepun.
We are looking forward to welcoming you in the Lotus View Room at Rumah Jepun - the home of a poet (published in 'A Taste of Bali' and 'Life's Journeys').
Ubud oozes with culture, scenery, temples, spas, art museums, meditation, alternative therapies, adventure, great shopping for handicrafts and many yoga studios - even the famous yoga barn is only 15 mins walk away.
This is topped off with a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, traditional performances and great live music.
And if you're vegetarian, vegan or a raw food lover then you'll be spoilt for choice in Ubud.
The folder in your room gives lots of ideas and you can ask me for more details.
We're right in the middle of Ubud.
The monkey forest, with hundreds of monkeys, is less than 8 mins walk away. The market and palace are easy walking distance at the other end of the Monkey Forest Road.
A map of Ubud is in the folder in your room and we can help you book transport to take you further afield to visit temples, rice terraces, the volcano or the beach.
We can also arrange an airport pick-up, just give us your flight details.
Other Things to Note
Bali is a tropical island so the weather tends to be warm, to hot, all year round, frequently reaching 30 deg c.
So you might want to cool off in our neighbouring hotel's swimming pool for a small fee, alternatively the nearest beach is only about an hour away.
The volcano is approximately an hour away too - in the opposite direction! Maybe you want to go to the hot springs there?
Hey, why not get your phone unlocked before you come to Bali - that way you can get a cheap sim card here and be able to contact us should you need help/advice while out and about.
Check in - is usually 2pm but if you arrive early we can store your bags.
Check out - is usually 12 noon but if you need us to store your bags for a while that is fine.
Rooms are non-smoking (nor candles or incense), but you are welcome to smoke on your private balcony.
This accommodation is not suitable for children, babies or people who have difficulty walking down steps.
In the unlikely event of fire/emergency please gather in the garden at Rumah Kita (last house along the pathway on the right).
Perfect location! Loved waking up each morning hearing the birds and having banana pancakes in the gorgeous garden. Julie was very helpful in booking a cooking class for me. Thanks for everything!
Very near to monkey forest, walking distance to major attractions and monkey forest road is a lovely little (but long) street for shopping. The room itself is very lovely with a terrance surrounded by garden - great place to chill out at night. Juile and staffs are extremly helpful and warm, adding in personal touch to my stay. Will come back again.
We stayed at Rumah Jepun for 2 nights and Julie was a wonderful host. Upon arrival, Julie gave us recommendations of the best places to visit whilst in Ubud, and she even organised a driver for us for the day to take us on a day trip to see the 3 temples, the volcano, coffee plantation and the rice fields. We didn't need to plan anything for our stay as Julie gave us recommendations for the spa, dance shows at night, the artist village, cooking classes etc, we had a really great trip. The room was very clean, comfortable and the bathroom was great. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast in the morning was delicious. Would definitely recommend staying here whilst in Ubud and the location was great as well.
We would highly recommend staying at Rumah Jepun.
Julie and her staff made us feel very welcome during our stay. We particularly liked the personal touches such as the box of useful items (torch, poetry book, plug converter etc) and Julie's guide to the local area.
The accommodation exudes charm and tranquility and is set amongst a lush, tropical garden which is great to wander around or chill-out in.
Julie was very knowledgeable about Ubud and Balinese traditions and was more than willing to give us great ideas to make our stay memorable.
The room is spacious and comfortable with plenty of storage space. We only wish we could have stayed longer.
One last thing: the breakfast was amazing with banana pancakes to die for.
Thank you Julie and team!!
Dear Julie and Pasek,
Thank you so much for providing us such a nice and warm welcome in Ubud! The house is located in the backyard of monkey Forrest road and from the terrace you have a perfect view into the garden, therefore very calm surrounding. There was a box prepared with useful things for the stay, towels and the hosts provided a nice take away breakfast cake and juice since we left so early. Julie gave us great recommendations herself and the local Indonesian people in the house gave us a lift to the rice fields and helped with carrying our stuff as well. Perfect stay but wayyy toooo short!!! Lovely place with lovely people awaits you :) cheers 2 backpacking girls from Austria
A recommander! Nous nous sentions comme chez nous en plus d'être choyé
More detailed in french, but just in few words, very nice stay, convenient because in the centre of Ubud, but really quiet.
Good room, wonderfull garden... And a great host!

About the Host, Pasek
Pasek and the Rumah Jepun team are looking forward to welcoming you.
We hope you'll experience Balinese culture, enjoy delicious Balinese food, marvel at nature's beauty, unique architecture and temples and be fascinated and inspired by this enchanting tropical island.
It's inspiration like this that has turned guests into poets, authors, singer/songwriters and artists.
Talking of art... you'll see artwork on the walls of Rumah Jepun made by a Balinese singer/songwriter/artist called Yaniq.
You might meet him here too, as well as our staff Gede, Kadek and Ketut (who make great pancakes for breakfast!) and long term resident Julie.
Come and visit Ubud and experience the beauty and inspiration for yourself.
