Hakodate is best known for the spectacular views to be enjoyed from Mt. Hakodate and its delicious, fresh seafood.
As one of the first Japanese harbor cities to be opened to international trade after the country's era of isolation, Hakodate has experienced notable influence from overseas, and the foreign population's former residential district and a Western style fort are among its main tourist attractions.
Our B&B Pension Hakodatemura was founded in 1984. Convenient location for sightseeing in Hakodate, such as the night view from Mt. Hakodate, Motomachi Old Churches, Kanemori's Red Brick Warehouses waterfrontsection...you can easy enjoy to stroll for a walk. We are looking forward to your visit !

We stayed with Sumiko-san for 3D2Ns and all I can say is we hope our stay would have been longer. Hakodate is such a beautiful port town with so many if the yesteryears charms still can be seen, heard and experienced. The old Hakodate factory area is a must to visit especially with all the Christmas activities all day long and the morning market is a gem for all seafood lovers. We gorged down a 1.2kg king crab and wanted more. At night you can see the trees all light up and Christmas songs played from the public announcement speakers along the streets of Hakodate.
Sumiko's B&B is so conveniently located and it is within walking distance to all the local attractions, any further you can also take the streetcar which the station is just 2 blocks from the B&B. There are great food & beverage outlets around the area that you can try to experience the local fare and hospitality. The Hakodate Factory is a great place for souvenir hunting too!
The B&B was really our home away from home and Sumiko made us feel more like family then guest in her cosy place. Overall it is spotlessly clean and for a true experience of Japanese culture, we opted for the traditional room with futons. Our room oversee the central courtyard and with the snow made the whole place so charming.
Sumiko went all way out to ensure we are comfortable throughout our stay, even with one of us had a minor injury, sumiko drove us between 2 medical centers to get treatment. She was with us not all the way not just as the chauffeur but also help us with the registration and translation. Thank god for Sumiko-san!
Our last day we opted to have breakfast and no regret with that decision. By the time we were down for breakfast, the dining area is warm and filled with aroma of freshly brewed coffee and of course she cooked us a very hearty breakfast before we start our 3 hours train ride journey from Hakodate back to Sapporo.
I will definitely stay with Sumiko-san if I come back to visit this charming town in future. Sumiko-san really showed us the meaning of omotenashi and we are so glad we choose to stay with her.
My family and I had a great stay with Sumiko in Hakodate. Very convenient location. The inn is clean and a great price. Sumiko's English is very good and she is very helpful with suggestions of places to try out and visit. She spontaneously noticed that my son did not eat his breakfast salad and the next day served him a fruit salad instead. (Which he greatly appreciated).
Definitely check out the morning market and the view from Mt Hakodate.
What a great place! I was on my way North from Tokyo and decided to take a little detour and leave Honshu for few days. I found this place through Airbnb first and then started researching the city history. This review is not about Hakodate but it would be a sin not to mention that it is truly a germ, a fascinating city,
The B&B is fabulously located. The part of the city where it's close to the rope way, old British Consulate, the Orthodox Church and many more attractions. I am a pro photographer so I got up early every morning and first walked to the Hakodate Fish market to try some of the local flavors. I also walked from the station to the B&B but I like walking (it took. me 15 minutes). It's close to the tram, too.
Sumiko was a great host. Together with her partner they run this little place well and make their guests fell comfortable. I received a lot help as I don't speak Japanese and Sumiko does speak good English.
Breakfasts are super special! Laundry is available and it does have wireless internet.
The bottom line: a great little place with great hosts! Forget about big business hotels, this is local, it's quiet and Sumiko will make sure you find your way around the city!
