The island of Hvar has been known since antiquity for its important strategic and nautical location, its various historical periods, cultural and natural monuments, and literature. It is characterized by mild climate, warm winters and pleasant summers, mediterranean nature is not disturbed, tourists can enjoy fresh fish and distinguished wines. It is considered one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world. In the central part of the island lies Jelsa. The first lady of the whole island, richly decorated with indented coastline and numerous islands, romantic coves and defiant capes, its beauty is still, above all, a result of a healthy way of life of its residents.
Between Vrboska, Jelsa and Stari Grad lies the most fertile field in the Adriatic islands. The large plain rich with mediterranean culture - lush vineyards and very well-known wines, orchards, olive trees and vegetables. A special artistic atmosphere, as is rarely to be found, is achieved with the surrounding mountains and hills, where it is grown and bred mediterranean herbs - relaxing lavender, healing sage, delicious almonds, authentic carob, distinctive slender pine and dignified cypress. The trees and plants are anthem of health, planted with effort of human hands, and blessed with the sun - the trademark of the whole island. Hvar in fact has the most sunny hours in Croatia, an average of 2726 sunshine hours per year! It is right to say that the one who travels to Jelsa actually goes to get the sun.
What characterizes the climate of this region are the summer winds. Morning levant and afternoon mistral create an almost full day of air flow that brings refreshing thoughts. Jelsa and UNESCO: In this small area there are even three cultural monuments on famous UNESCO list of world intangible heritage.
1. Procession "Following the Cross" is a practice unique in world, that takes place continuously for 400 years! Procession is the heritage of the whole island. It begins on Maundy Thursday, with mass at six parishes: Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirce, Vrbanj and Vrboska, after which the faithful of each parish attend the 25 km long procession, which lasts all night until the early morning of Holy Friday. It is therefore 6 procession, which in clockwise circular visit other places, and never to meet. The cross bearer leads the procession, which is for this honorable task selected dozens of years earlier, sometimes at birth. The cross bearer walks barefoot or in socks, cross that bears weighs 18 kg, followed by the fraternity brothers in white tunics (laymen), and many people, all with lighted candles and rosaries. During this procession folk songs about the Passion of Christ are sung.
2. Stari Grad Plain (ager) is the best preserved ancient - greek landscape in the Mediterranean. The story of this field begins 385th year BC, when the island of Paros in the Aegean Sea sent a group of a hundred families in the Adriatic Sea to found a colony there. Okist headed them, whose duty was to make a proper division of conquered land to the settlers. Middle of the field is determined by the starting point (omphalos), so the field is with a simple instrument measured and divided into parcels. Boundary stones were erected, on which were inscribed the names of the owners. After there were built ancillary buildings and dwellings, among which is now found cca 60 luxury from Roman times. It is the opinion of the World Organization UNESCO that the local vineyards and olive trees remained "virtually unchanged" from the first colonization of the ancient Greeks and that this is unique example of the geometric division of the country, which was used in antiquity.
Hvar lace is an extraordinary tradition, both materially and spiritually valuable. It is a beautiful lace made of agave, a typical mediterranean plants, by the nuns of the Benedictine monastery in Hvar. Hvar lace is made of thin and solid threads extracted from fresh leaves of agave, which must not be younger than 3 years. The thread length of 1 meter is extracted from the leaves, followed by additional treatment, and only then are ready for the process of making lace. The tradition of making lace from the agave plant date from mid-19th century, when local sailors brought a copy of the lace from Tenerife, after which, having studied the pattern adopted, Hvar nuns produced more beautiful, original and unique example of Hvar lace. An interesting is that once made lace is not washed but kept under glass in order to fully protect. These threads of agave follows the legend of the early neolithic man in Hvar archipelago who fished using a net made of just agave threads.
Great self-catering option on a budget. Accommodation is cosy and welcoming. Robert and his parents were super friendly and helpful! The house is located in a really beautiful area with lots of great swimming spots nearby. Bring snorkeling gear if you have it ;) and don't miss out on visiting nearby town Stari Grad. Be careful about arranging travel on Sundays as there are limited ferry options that day. I made this mistake and had to leave one day early and spend a night in Split in order to make my early flight home. I had a wonderful stay here - recommended!
Thank you dad Robert for meeting us! His parents were very nice and caring people. Apartments are clean and comfortable. Located in a quiet and comfortable place, clean air and sea helps to relax.
We stayed two nights. The room was big and clean, in a very good position, 2km away from jelsa and right in front of the sea. It took 2 minutes by foot to arrive to the beach. The bathroom was private, and the kitchen shared but ok, with every tools. Our hosts were very kind.
Although the apartment is very simple, as the pictures show, it is good value for money and was perfect for a few days' relaxation. We swam at the beach below the house every morning and night and enjoyed pancakes made by Robert's mother. It was a lovely spot to relax, away from the tourist crowds but an easy walk to Jelsa along the coastal path.
We had a great stay at Robert´s place. His dad picked us up from the bus station and was cheerful and nice. Robertś dad speaks German and Croatian but basic communication wasn´t a problem.
The room was a good value with a little refrigerator and a nice terrace. In the entryway there was a stove and sink----and happily for me a coffee machine. I also liked that there was a good spot to hang out hand washing. The bed was comfortable and it was QUIET at night. But best of all, a beautiful cove for swimming was right down a short path. The walk to town was lovely and invigorating. We rented bikes and rode from town to town one day.
Overall, it was a delightful stay and I would definately visit again.
The place was clean and comfotable. I would definitely recommend it to anyone on a budget. We didn't get to meet Robert as his family seemed to be running the show, but that was fine. His father was very friendly and spoke some Deutsch which was a help. He came into town when we got there and took us back to the appartment. Very close to the water and about a 15 minute walk into Jelsa harbour.
Thanks Robert :)
First of all Robert's family is adorable, it's a delight and a pleasure to stay with them, always available and helpful.
The apartment has everything you need, with garden and balcony to have a nice dinner. Also the aparment is a few steps from the water, the place is beautiful, quiet, close to downtown and the port of Jelsa, we visited all the island of Hvar and I think we choose the right place to stay, breathes peace in every corner.
Thank you very much! and hope to return!
