This is great for backpackers, workers, families and students who want private
lockable rooms in the Inner West with free use of multiple kitchens and bathrooms and who
understand that the rundown nature of the guesthouse means cheap rooms!
****Please read the description below and contact me before booking so I can confirm prices and dates. ****
Room 10 is the most popular room for couples. It is not as big as room 7 but it is on the opposite side of the hallway away from the highway so has no highway noise. It has a shower, double bed, huge wardrobe, small study desk and a small fridge and freezer.
The guesthouse is above a shop in the warehouse/industrial area close to Sydney Airport and it is on the corner of some very busy streets. If you find noise in the house is an issue you can ask for free earplugs but most people get used to it very quickly. There is street parking behind the building.
Rooms do not have TVs and there is no common lounge or dining area. We do provide free fast wifi Internet across the house. We are best suited to be either a “crash pad” for travellers who are out most of the day and don't need common areas or for students who will be spending a lot of time in their rooms studying or working.
It's is also only 5kms from University of Sydney and UTS. It's 8kms from University of New South Wales and buses to both places take less than half an hour.
You are less than five minutes walk to a small shop, a Hungry Jacks(Burger King), a KFC and a McDonalds. Opposite the house is a pub with restaurant, events, music and cheap drinks.
Fifteen minutes walk takes to you a beautiful big parkland area with a cafe, or to the local shopping centre of Marrickville with the nearest big supermarket.
This is a great opportunity for backpackers, workers, families and students who want private lockable rooms in the Inner West with free use of multiple kitchens and bathrooms and who understand that the rundown nature of the guesthouse means cheap rooms!
There are 10 bedrooms in total, two kitchens, three bathrooms and some rooms have their own showers. The smallest rooms can sleep two and the largest rooms can take six in dorm style, or a small family. There is a coin operated washing machine and dryer on site. There may be up to 20 people in the guesthouse sharing all facilities and everybody is expected to help keep kitchens and bathrooms clean.
Interaction with Guests
There is no reception desk so this guesthouse is suitable for independent travellers who do not need much assistance.
I do not live in the guesthouse but can be contacted if there are problems. I provide a professional cleaning company once a week to clean common areas, along with all bills paid, all kitchen and bathroom supplies including free linen. Think of it like a giant share house but with less hassle and a few more perks.
Although the actual block the guesthouse is on is very ugly and so is the immediate area, it is a fantastic location if you are adventurous and prepared to walk a bit, or use public transport. It's less than 5kms from the airport - a taxi is very cheap to the house.
Thirty minutes walk or a short bus ride takes you to some very cool shops and bars in Marrickville(Marrickville Rd) or Newtown(King St).
We are fifteen minutes walk from St Peters or Sydenham train stations (1.5kms) but the buses are directly outside the door so you should experiment to see what you prefer – you can buy a weekly ticket that works on buses and trains. It's about 6kms to Central Station in the city. We are also only about 4kms from RPA Hospital.
It would take you 20 minutes to drive to the beaches or an hour by public transport. And if that's not enough you can take a 20 min walk (2 minute bus) trip to the biggest IKEA in the Southern Hemisphere just down the road from us.
Other Things to Note
To show that you have read and understood my description please include the magic word "Unicorn" in your email to me when enquiring.
PLEASE NOTE: We try our best to give you the room you booked but due to the unpredictable nature of juggling multiple guests who extend alongside upcoming new bookings you may be given a different room in the same guesthouse. If this would cause issues for you please consider other AirBnB properties. In trying to be fair we do not ask existing guests who love us to move out of rooms for new guests if a similar room in the house is instead empty
"Photos on the site may differ slightly from the actual room as we replace furniture and bedding as needed and have fun rearranging at times."
This is by no means a party place – if you would like a more social atmosphere with common areas and a backyard look at my other listings for Scruffy Old Campsie Guesthouse.
We are a strictly NON-SMOKING guesthouse. The nearest area to smoke is out on the street or laneway.
No extra guests without permission, no drugs and no drunken behaviour.
We had very good experience in this guesthouse. Our room was for 6 people to fit, but also very tidy and clean. Some neighbours didn't left the kitchen or bathroom clean but it was still much better than to stay in a hostel. Furthermore we had quicker wifi than anywhere else in Australia :D
Would definately stay again!
The landlord and the two managers are kind and considerate.
This place is on a highway and not far from the airport or the shopping center, or the city center.
The facilities provided are nice.
Although airplanes fly over this area, it is generally quite and peace. (No planes at night)
I met with some short-term tenant from different countries, interesting talking and cooking with them.
The room is big enough for 4 person and its comfortable to stay at. The place is convenient as bus stop is jyst around the corner. Kitchen and toilet is also just next to the door. Host is prompt in solving problem too.
Jody was a cordial host who kept up great communication throughout my stay. Room # 10 was well placed away from any noise of the highway and the room was large and well lit. I would certainly recommend it for anyone looking for something affordable in the area. Sharn
The place is in a great location, so I walked to Newtown area many times. It's not the cleanest place to stay, but is still comfortable, and have pretty much everything you need. Also, I met a bunch of nice people in the building. Overall, I had a nice stay, Thank you3
Thanks for the great comments. However, I'm sorry you felt we weren't clean enough. When you first raised an issue I personally went to check the house and felt it was fine but I did move you rooms so you were further away from bathrooms. We also redid the cleaning. I didn't get any feedback about ongoing issues from yourself or other guests but I have still talked to the house manager to make sure we are doing the best we can to create a lovely clean experience.
Had a great stay! Everyone was friendly and Jody looked after me very well. I will definitely be returning. Florent

I'm a 37 year old solo mama of one boy, Elliott, who is five years old. I was looking for some way to stay home and raise my son without working long hours so I started renting out rooms in my personal house. That grew so busy I found an old guesthouse, and then another one, and now I have over 55 rooms for rent!
I live at The Rex with my son and our dogs currently. We also have a live in house manager couple, Helen and Megan who manage the Sydney business.
We're a friendly bunch and happy to help you get settled in Sydney or Tamworth and give you some local knowledge. If we are busy then we have instructions on how to check yourself in without our help and we will try and say hi during your first few days!
We love independent travellers, students and families who aren't looking for "the party scene" but want more a friendly, home like vibe. We're very LGBT friendly, love people from all backgrounds and children of all ages. The guesthouses are older style, very basic and clean with a bit of character. Most importantly the guesthouses are safe and in local areas!
