The Space

Conde Nast named it the Best City in the World. Beautiful San Miguel de Allende, colonial gem in the heart of Mexico. Your guestroom awaits you at Casa Lenita, with your own private bath, terrace with trees and plants, comfy furniture, privacy and tranquility. We share the street entrance, but your space is upstairs and separate. (no handicap access) Stairs to the azotea provide 360 views of the Parroquia and surrounding hills, church domes and gorgeous star-filled night skies. Azotea is spanish for rooftop, where you'll fnd furniture and plants, a sweet spot for the first morning coffee, yoga, reading, cocktails and fireworks watching.

Your room features a kingsize bed that can also be made up as twins, plus a beautiful in-suite bathroom, lockable closet for your valuables, Guatemalan and Mexican textiles and art by your host. Plus a bit of the host's huge collection of Virgin of Guadalupes and a library of books by regional artists and more. Coffee, tea, fruit available, and coffee maker is in your room. Always plenty of filtered water for your use.

Glass doors to let in lots of light, lots of luscious trees and plants on the terrace to provide privacy. The only downside is that you just might never want to leave. But leave you must, if you want to enjoy San Miguel and it's shops, galleries, museums, concerts, restaurants, jardines, parades, dancers, musicians, all the things that make this the best destination in colonial Mexico.

This safe and lively neighborhood is Colonia Guadalupe, where kids play in the street and everyone greets you with a smile. Recently we were officially designated as The Guadalupe Arts District, and you will find beautiful colorful murals on the walls as you stroll around the streets. If you would like, I can book you a full or half day tour of the studios of our artists in this Arts District. I will also find you a workshop or class to fit your needs, be they art, yoga, meditation, spanish or something else. Need a good masseuse, acupuncture, haircut? Just let me know and I'll get you the info. Want to create your own art, write your novel, present a workshop? My studio is almost always available to you for whatever you wish to work on. Yes, you're very own artist residency without the application process!

We're a flat walk to both Centro and Fabrica Aurora, 2 min. and just around the corner to Via Organica market, restaurant, Marcia's Black and White Boutique and El Pato art store. The tienda on our corner has produce, and just about anything you need in a pinch.

Two blocks away you can catch a bus or a taxi if you wish to venture further.

My home is smoke-free, pet-free, scent-free and vegetarian; if you have allergies, this is a healthy and perfect environment for you.

Guest Access

In addition to you room: Terrace, rooftop, library, and usually the art studio and kitchen but only by prior agreement.

Interaction with Guests

Sometimes I'm here, sometimes not. House manager is on duty if I'm not. When I am here, nteraction with guests only as they wish. Guests have entire second floor, with as much privacy as they desire.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood, Colonia Guadalupe, has been officially designated as The Arts District. This means there is a large number of artists living and working here, there are street murals and street festivals happening and changing the face and feeling of the community. And last but not least, there is an art store, an organic market and restaurant, and other necessities like hardware stores, tiendas for any kinds of groceries, and we're close to the galleries and stores in the Fabrica Aurora.

Getting around

Urban bus stops 2 blocks from my house, taxis easy to find. First class bus terminal for other cities in Mexico is about a mile away. From airports, you can come to San Miguel via this terminal, on either ETN or Primera Plus, both luxury buses. Or, you can schedule an airport shuttle with BajioGo, whether you fly into Mexico City, Leon, or Queretaro.

  • We had a delightful and restful time during our stay at Lena's home. Lena is a truely kind, generous and thoughtful host. The house felt warm, inviting and esthetically enchanting from the moment we pulled up to the front door. The Guadalupe neighborhood is quite yet alive with multi generational families, vibrant murals and daily San Miguel life. Days are active but nights are tranquil.

A gorgeous carved wood door and bogenvillia plant grace the entrance of the home. Since Lena was doing errands when we arrived, her housekeeper greeted us with kindness.

We stayed in the "Green Room" which was well appointed and combined the best of San Miguel's colonial Spanish architecture with a wonderful burst of folk art flare.

Each detail of Lena's hospitality made us feel special and welcome; a basket of fruit and snacks in our room to munch on, umbrellas waiting at the bottom of the stairs during a rainy day, Lena's special recommendations and easy way of being.

We now consider this the only place we would stay when we return to San Miguel. We whole heartedly recommend Lena and her home. Thank you Lena for allowing us to visit.

  • Our experience with Lena was AWESOME!! She was very helpful and kind from the very first contact through Airbnb all the way to the last hug the night before we left to go home. Lena is quiet, accommodating and very helpful with travel tips and ideas. She seemed to always have a sense of easy and comfort with sharing her home.
The place is comfortable, colorful, convenient to town, has a lovely patio with plants and sitting area, there is interesting art on the walls and all around. I loved taking in all the different Virgin of Guadalupes which seemed to be presented all around.
The neighborhood was colorful with murals and made our walk to town and back colorful and friendly and it was so comforting and exciting to see the blue of Lena's place after a stint of being away. A lot of the homes in this neighborhood have character and creativity beaming from them. The church very close by is quite a site inside, simply elegant. It was easy to catch a taxi nearby if we were heading out of town. There was a man we heard just about every early evening we were there selling his food specialty up and down the streets, something entertaining and comforting about it was lovely.
Yep, this is a pretty cool place to stay! Everything was kept clean and we always felt like we had a private area even when another couple stayed in the suite across the patio from us during part of our stay.

  • A delightful stay in San Miguel de Allende. Lena's place is located within a comfortable walk to the historic town centre. Her house is artistically presented with a colourful Mexican flavour. King bed was very comfortable; room cleaned twice a week. Enjoyed our breakfast each day in the courtyard area. Felt comfortable with the shared kitchen and lounge and ability to use Lena's studio when we wanted. Lena was warm, friendly and helpful with advice, directions and ringing for taxi when needed. We felt spoiled with the fruit plate and fresh coffee. Had a wonderful 2 weeks and would love to return.

  • Lovely setting, felt welcomed with little touches such as pitchers filled with fresh water and coffee maker in the room, use of well-equipped kitchen if desired and lovely outside patio, comfy bed and spacious room. I felt at home yet treated like a honored guest!

  • Excellent accommodations! We'll return and stay again if possible!

  • San Miguel de Allende was voted the best city in the world to visit by Conde Naste Readers and did not disappoint. We had great fun in San Miguel. However, the biggest treasure in San Miguel de Allende is not the parroquia. I believe the biggest treasure in San Miguel de Allende is Lena Bartula. She is one fine lady.

  • We enjoyed our stay with Lena very much. The house is lovely, chic and colorful, and the bedroom was just as described, with a wonerfully comfortable bed. The area is very authentic, and a short stroll to the central plaza. Lena was most helpful at all times..

  • Just returned from a wonderful visit to San Miguel de Allende. Our host Lena, was always pleasant and accommodating. We loved our room. Plenty of storage, colorful and clean. The patio just outside was wonderful on sunny days for our breakfast. Thank you Lena for a great stay in your home.

  • This is a lovely place! Don't miss it! I want to come back!

    September 2013
  • This was my second stay with Lena. On my first visit to San Miguel, Lena welcomed my partner and I into her warm, artistic home. I feel in love with San Miguel on that first visit and had to return. I was so excited to stay with Lena again. She is an absolute joy. I feel so lucky to call her my friend.

Stay with Lena, drink some wine on the rooftop terrace, support Mariposas San Miguel, and let your spirit renew!

I can't wait to go back to stay with Lena again and again!

Artist in (my own) Residence
Artist for many years, expat from Santa Fe, N.M. living full time in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. I'm an easy guest and some people say a great host. I love meeting new people from all over the world. I don't love big groups, don't party, non-smoker, no drugs, nice radical grandmotherly cosmic space-explorer artist type. I'm happy to show you my San Miguel if you are new to the scene. Sagittarian, feminist, flexitarian, borderline Buddhist / spiritual being just being here now, I love galleries, museums, cultural experiences of any kind. I know the art scene in San Miguel and will happily give you a tour of our neighborhood, the newly designated Arts District of Colonia Guadalupe. My rooms are like your own private artist residencies, so come and explore, create, let San Miguel inspire you. "All art, all the time!"
