In a 100+-year-old former hotel, we have a lovely 5-room apartment with long corridors, high ceilings, many tall windows, and 2 full baths, one with a bathtub and one with a shower. The kitchen and both baths as well as the double-paned windows are no more than 7 years old. Our guests have a large bedroom with double bed and a comfy mattress, a closet for clothes, as well as the use of the bathroom with shower. We do not use this bathroom except to shower and we'd coordinate that with your needs. You are free to use the kitchen (we can coordinate cooking times) and of course the living room.
We provide breakfast for you and show you where things are in the kitchen (Included in the price)
Our work schedules are quite irregular, and we do not want to commit to being full-time hosts who show you all around.
We are a happily married American couple, age 60, with two grown sons. We have traveled a fair amount ourselves and worked for many years in a multicultural setting, so we love to meet people from different cultures. While we might not always have time to do things with you, we can provide tips for travel in Switzerland and especially for hikes and skiing in this region. There are endless possibilities for hiking and climbing for all levels. We both speak German and English and KC speaks French as well.
The apartment is in the very center of lovely Meiringen, a village of 5,000 people between Interlaken (35 minutes by train) and Lucerne (75 minutes by train). It has all amenities you really need. The train station is a 5 mins. walk from our house. Public transportation is excellent. There are many restaurants in town and in the area, 2 grocery stores, hardware stores, florists, gift shops, an outdoor and indoor pool, climbing gym and tennis, and many tourist attractions primarily geared to the outdoors. There is easy access to the lovely hiking/ski area Hasliberg as well as to other hiking/ski areas in the region. Sherlock Holmes fans love to come here because "The Final Problem" took place here. There is a tiny Sherlock Holmes museum and a special hike to commemorate this.
The region is well known for paragliding, sport climbing, its gorges and five exquisite alpine valleys with attending passes. The Aare gorge is right in town and the even more dramatic Rosenlaui gorge is a hike/bus/car ride from here in our favorite alpine valley, Rosenlaui, as well as a gateway to the Susten, Grimsel and Joch passes, Trift glacier hanging bridge, the steepest funicular to Gelmer Lake, and much more.
There are trains to Interlaken twice an hour at 0.22 and 0.51 after the hour. The trip takes about 35 minutes and costs Sfr 25.20 round-trip for a full-price ticket. Interlaken is heavily touristed largely due to the train to the Top of Europe (about Sfr 190 per person.)
For Holmes fans this is a must stop as "The Final Problem" took place here. The Englischerhof in the story is our Hotel Sauvage and there is a special train up to the falls where Holmes and Moriarty battled to their apparent death.
There are trains to Lucerne once an hour at 0.42 past the hour. This trip takes 72 minutes and costs about Sfr 30 round-trip at full-price. Lucerne is on a beautiful large lake and has a lovely old town and is for many visitors their favorite city in Switzerland.
Go to (website hidden) for public transportation schedules and (website hidden) is also very comprehensive and informative.
The local Swiss Tourist Office requires us to charge a tax that is used to pay for the tourist infrastructure of the region. It is 3 francs per adult per night (1 franc for kids under 16). We will collect this from you upon arrival. Sorry! You do receive reductions on some local attractions after paying this tax.
Please note that we do have a friendly dog who lives indoors. If you are afraid of or allergic to dogs, ours is probably not the best place for you. We cannot put her outside as we do not have a garden and we do not want to lock her in a room for a few days.
Kitchen and living room as well as their own room and guest bath of course.
Interaction with Guests
We love to interact with our guests if we are around. We love meeting people from different cultures and hearing about their country, family, work but sometimes we are working and hardly see our guests at all.
Surrounded by Swiss Alps with a few of some glaciers out our windows. Everything in easy walking distance. All necessary amenities are right here and it's centrally located between the lovely cites of Interlaken and Lucerne.
Public transportation in the area is superb! 4-minute walk to the train/bus station. Check (website hidden) for schedules.
Other Things to Note
Bed linens, towels and a hearty breakfast are included in the price.
For those driving, there is ample metered parking on the street in front of house as well as an underground parking garage across the street.
We expect our guests to tidy up after themselves in the public areas (kitchen, living room) and to leave the bedroom and bathroom tidy.
Otherwise, we like people to be friendly and polite, to feel at home and to tell us what they need and prefer, as well as what their general plans are so we know about meals and such.
We ask that guests take short showers to conserve the limited hot water so everyone has enough.
Please scrape the shower walls with the rubber scraper in shower.
No smoking in house. On the balcony is okay.
No access to cellar but skis and big gear could be stored in the attic.
Guests are asked to leave (almost) no trace, i.e., clean up kitchen after use; leave room reasonably picked up.
There is a washing machine and a dishwasher which can be used but started by us.
Wi-Fi in house. Code available once one is here.
Kathleen is a wonderful hostess. From the moment of contact till departure, she had thought of almost everything a guest desires. The directions to the house were clear, just a short walk from the train station. The hosts were there to welcome us. Their house is beautiful, and so was the room - clean, neat and comfortable. A very thoughtful gesture was that they had kept several tourist guides for reference.
Overall a wonderful experience.
Kathleen and KC! I dont know where to start this description from. It was a perfect holiday stay at their beautiful apartment. We had all the things at our disposal we could think of. Lavish breakfast was always ready at our table before we woke up. DO not even think of missing KC's home cooked bread. The friendliest dog (she) i have ever met :). Pictures do not justify the beauty of the surroundings. Thanks KC, Kathleen and phibi for such a warm welcome and making our stay so comfortable. I highly recommend their place if you like cleanliness, nature and wonderful people around.
Nice host and very good location...good one to visit in festival time...loved special bread made as well...
Kathleen and KC were perfect hosts. We had a very comfortable stay with them. They told us all about the places of tourist interest that we could visit while in Meiringer. The highlight of our stay was the bread that KC not only baked for us but also showed us in detail the making of that special bread. We highly recommend Kathleen and KC as hosts.
We had an amazing stay with Kathleen and KC in Meiringen! Meiringen is a gorgeous city with incredible hiking trails everywhere (highlights were the gorge and the waterfall!). The nearby lake is also great with many great opportunities to swim!
The apartment was great; the bedroom was spacious and had a great view of the city and mountains. The breakfast served each morning was also amazing!
Kathleen had great suggestions for activities in the area and was a pleasure to chat with. Couldn’t have been happier with the experience!
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Meiringen and the room provided was bright, spacious and beautiful.
Kathleen and KC were friendly and helpful and very flexible and accommodating with regard to breakfast.
I enjoyed it very much.

About the Host, Kathleen
KATHLEEN and KC:
We are both from the United States and have lived in Switzerland for over 20 years now. We have been very happily married for 31 years and have two grown sons and a 6-year-old dog named Phoebe.
We both love hiking, snowshoeing and skiing, chocolate and ice cream. If we can have all 5 in one day, we celebrate with an extra scoop.
For 18 years we worked as teachers, dorm heads and also co-directors of a wonderful boarding school here in the Swiss Alps. We are now both parent and teacher educators of the Positive Discipline approach, giving talks, workshops and classes in Switzerland and the U.S.
We are long-time ovo-lacto vegetarians and students of Thich Nhat Hanh.
I am a social worker and currently work as a parent educator and coach in private practice. I worked for 9 years in the US as a psychotherapist and then 18 years in Switzerland in a unique international boarding school in many different roles.
In addition to what's listed above, I love coffee, yoga, being with family and friends, reading, NYT crossword puzzles, films (not action or horror). I am a huge fan of Michelle and Barack Obama.
I love back-country skiing, swimming in alpine lakes and rivers, reading stories aloud, playing games like chess, bridge, sudoku and free cell, frisbee with our dog, tennis, and traveling.
