In a 100+-year-old former hotel, we have a lovely 5-room apartment with long corridors, high ceilings, many tall windows, and 2 full baths, one with a bathtub and one with a shower. The kitchen and both baths as well as the double-paned windows are no more than 7 years old. Our guests have a large bedroom with double bed and a comfy mattress, a closet for clothes, as well as the use of the bathroom with shower. We do not use this bathroom except to shower and we'd coordinate that with your needs. You are free to use the kitchen (we can coordinate cooking times) and of course the living room.
We provide breakfast for you and show you where things are in the kitchen (Included in the price)
Note that the apartment is on the 2nd floor (European) or 3rd floor (as in the U.S.) with NO elevator (lift) so one has to walk up many stairs. Very authentic older European.
Our work schedules are quite irregular, and we do not want to commit to being full-time hosts who show you all around.
We are a happily married American couple, age 60, with two grown sons. We have traveled a fair amount ourselves and worked for many years in a multicultural setting, so we love to meet people from different cultures. While we might not always have time to do things with you, we can provide tips for travel in Switzerland and especially for hikes and skiing in this region. There are endless possibilities for hiking and climbing for all levels. We both speak German and English and KC speaks French as well.
The apartment is in the very center of lovely Meiringen, a village of 5,000 people between Interlaken (35 minutes by train) and Lucerne (75 minutes by train). It has all amenities you really need. The train station is a 5 mins. walk from our house. Public transportation is excellent. There are many restaurants in town and in the area, 2 grocery stores, hardware stores, florists, gift shops, an outdoor and indoor pool, climbing gym and tennis, and many tourist attractions primarily geared to the outdoors. There is easy access to the lovely hiking/ski area Hasliberg as well as to other hiking/ski areas in the region. Sherlock Holmes fans love to come here because "The Final Problem" took place here. There is a tiny Sherlock Holmes museum and a special hike to commemorate this.
The region is well known for paragliding, sport climbing, its gorges and five exquisite alpine valleys with attending passes. The Aare gorge is right in town and the even more dramatic Rosenlaui gorge is a hike/bus/car ride from here in our favorite alpine valley, Rosenlaui, as well as a gateway to the Susten, Grimsel and Joch passes, Trift glacier hanging bridge, the steepest funicular to Gelmer Lake, and much more.
There are trains to Interlaken twice an hour at 0.22 and 0.51 after the hour. The trip takes about 35 minutes and costs Sfr 25.20 round-trip for a full-price ticket. Interlaken is heavily touristed largely due to the train to the Top of Europe (about Sfr 190 per person.)
For Holmes fans this is a must stop as "The Final Problem" took place here. The Englischerhof in the story is our Hotel Sauvage and there is a special train up to the falls where Holmes and Moriarty battled to their apparent death.
There are trains to Lucerne once an hour at 0.42 past the hour. This trip takes 72 minutes and costs about Sfr 30 round-trip at full-price. Lucerne is on a beautiful large lake and has a lovely old town and is for many visitors their favorite city in Switzerland.
Go to (URL HIDDEN) for public transportation schedules and planning. ww(URL HIDDEN) is also very comprehensive and informative.
The local Swiss Tourist Office requires us to charge a tax that is used to pay for the tourist infrastructure of the region. It is 3 francs per adult per night (1 franc for kids under 16). We will collect this from you upon arrival. Sorry! You do receive reductions on some local attractions after paying this tax.
Please note that we do have a friendly dog who lives indoors. If you are afraid of or allergic to dogs, ours is probably not the best place for you. We cannot put her outside as we do not have a garden and we do not want to lock her in a room for a few days.
Kitchen and living room as well as their own room and guest bath of course.
Interaction with Guests
We love to interact with our guests if we are around. We love meeting people from different cultures and hearing about their country, family, work but sometimes we are working and hardly see our guests at all.
Surrounded by Swiss Alps with a few of some glaciers out our windows. Everything in easy walking distance. All necessary amenities are right here and it's centrally located between the lovely cites of Interlaken and Lucerne.
Public transportation in the area is superb! 4-minute walk to the train/bus station. Check sbb.ch for schedules.

We expect our guests to tidy up after themselves in the public areas (kitchen, living room) and to leave the bedroom and bathroom tidy.
Otherwise, we like people to be friendly and polite, to feel at home and to tell us what they need and prefer, as well as what their general plans are so we know about meals and such.
