The Space

A calm oasis, yet right in the middle of town...

A choice of two lovely double bedrooms, both with private balconies overlooking a delightfully lush tropical garden.

The Lotus View and River View offer a blend of modern facilities merged with traditional touches.

Beautiful hand-carved Balinese doors, brightly coloured furnishings, a wardrobe with plenty of coat hangers and western style en-suite bathrooms.

The rooms are non-smoking with daily housekeeping.

The garden is on three levels as it goes down to the river and its small waterfall. There are papaya and banana trees, jepun and hibiscus flowers, chili and aloe vera plants.

You walk down steps of the leaf-imprinted pathway, embedded with words such as 'harmony' and 'gratitude' to your room on the ground floor.

You can sit on the bale (gazebo) with a cup of coffee and a book, or your laptop. It's a great place to meditate and we can even arrange an outdoor massage there for you, or provide you a mat for yoga under warm Balinese skies.

Although Rumah Jepun is set in a quiet and tranquil garden it's only 2 mins walk to the many shops, cafes, bars and spas along the busy Monkey Forest Road.

If this room isn't available try its sister room, Lotus View Room: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/761611.

Note: the two rooms at Rumah Jepun are ideal for singles, couples or two friends who are happy to share a double room.

Guest Access

Your en-suite room comes with wifi, aircon and a private balcony which overlooks the garden.

Sun-loungers are available or you can chill out in the bale (a thatched gazebo) next to the river.

Drinking water is freely available and our housekeeper will also make you a choice of breakfasts, plus tea and coffee during the day.

Interaction with Guests

Our friendly, live-in staff will greet you and offer a welcome drink. If we know your arrival time they can also help to bring your bags from the street to your room.

I'm nearly always here to welcome you too and can answer any queries and have a chat about Bali and its unique culture.

Some guests have even joined me for a meal, drink or a night-out dancing at Yaniq's gig (my Balinese partner).

We are looking forward to welcoming you in the River View Room at Rumah Jepun - the home of a poet (published in 'A Taste of Bali' and 'Life's Journeys').

The Neighborhood

Ubud oozes with culture, scenery, temples, spas, art museums, meditation, alternative therapies, adventure, great shopping for handicrafts and even the yoga barn is less than 20 mins walk away.

This is topped off with a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, traditional performances and great live music.

The folder in your room gives lots of ideas and you can ask me for more details.

Getting around

We're right in the middle of Ubud.

The monkey forest, with hundreds of monkeys, is less than 10 mins walk away. The market and palace are easy walking distance at the other end of the Monkey Forest Road.

A map of Ubud is in the folder in your room and we can help you book a taxi to take you further afield to visit temples, rice terraces, the volcano or the beach.

We can also arrange an airport pick-up, just give us your flight details.

Other Things to Note

Bali is a tropical island so the weather tends to be warm, to hot, all year round, frequently reaching 30 deg c.

So you might want to cool off in our neighbouring hotel's swimming pool for a small fee, alternatively the nearest beach is only about an hour away.

The volcano is approximately an hour away too - in the opposite direction! Maybe you want to go to the hot springs there?

  • It was such a delight staying at Julie's Rumah Jepun! It truly was a hidden gem. So nice to turn off the busy road and enter into a peaceful, beautiful garden, surrounded by papaya and banana trees, hibiscus and Jepun, and other lovely, colourful flowers. We loved it!! Julie was fantastic at suggesting things for us to do, and explaining about the Balinese culture, and we had delicious breakfasts made by Gede. Did I mention that we loved it? We'll highly encourage any of our friends to stay there, and if we're lucky enough to return to Ubud, we'll definitely stay there again.

  • Our time at Julie's was amazing! To put things into perspective, both my partner and I caught a terrible cold and flu as soon as we landed in Bali. Julie's home and Ubud was the perfect place to recover as well as enjoy the beauty and rich culture of Ubud, Bali.

Julie and her staff, Gede and Ketut were extremely hospitable. They were caring and extremely genuine. They made sure we were hydrated with lots of ginger tea and got us a fan in lieu of the AC. Julie recommended an amazing traditional healer, Wayan Ketut who significantly helped us both.

Julie's place is nestled in a lush garden with beautiful flowers. The room was a good size and the bed comfortable. It is in the perfect location (right in the centre yet away from the noise and traffic). Breakfast made by Gede was delicious!! We LOVED the banana pancakes - you must try it! Did I mention how lovely Gede is? Such amazing energy.

Julie helped us plan our days and had amazing recommendations: Sedona Spa. White water rafting, great restaurants, various temples and fire dance show. Julie arranged our airport pickup with Wayan and we booked with him two other times for day trips - highly recommended!

The thing I loved the most is that Julie has a genuine love for the Balinese culture and great respect for the people which made me feel good about my stay.

Thank you so much Julie for taking good care of us, thank you for your kindness, hospitality, great recommendations, and your lovely energy.

Highly recommended and will definitely stay again if ever I am in Bali.

  • Julie was a lovely host and her staff very accommodating. She made herself available any time we needed help i.e. booking excursions, general information about Indonesia, advice on great spas, restaurants etc.and she responds to most email inquiries within minutes. Gede made wonderful omelets for breakfast and we dined on our patio overlooking beautiful gardens. Also, the location in Ubud was perfect. Off the beaten path, so plenty of privacy, but less than a 1 minute walk from wonderful restaurants and shops. Highly recommend.

  • A great way to land on your feet in Ubud. From the busy streets down the pathway enter another world. Julie`s home is a little piece of paradise. It is quiet and tranquil with easy access to all the activities Ubud has to offer. Julie and her staff are wonderful and nothing is too much trouble. A wonderful visit.

  • If you have stumbled across Julie's listing, consider your search over! It's hard to put into words how great this room is. 'Perfect' I suppose will have to suffice.

It's so secluded, it's a mini-adventure walking the path to the house from the main street. But when you're ready to go out, it's so close to dozens and dozens of restaurants, bars, and monkeys ready to literally climb up your shirt to grab a banana from your hand!

Julie was so friendly and accommodating, and the room was pristine. My wife and I had such an amazing time here.

  • Excellent location, most convenient to get around even without bikes and i really pat my back for finding this gem:) Julie was the most gracious host, and her place is truely spectacular. We were especially appreciative of all of the recommendations related to "where to eat" or "what to do" in Ubud as they were all great. Staff was equally hospitable and we were never short of a great breakfast and wonderful Balinese coffee during our stay. This was our first trip and I will definately book again with her on future trips. Many thanks Julie!

  • Had the most amazing time at this wonderful little hidden gem. Julie is an awesome host and always offering advise or help where needed, or inviting us out to join them in the evening. The room has everything you need for a comfortable stay and the staff are just lovely. We felt very humble to have had such wonderful people looking after us. Breakfasts are beautiful as are the surroundings tucked down in the trees where not a sound can be heard, but within 2 minutes walk having everything at your fingertips, great restaurants and shops. We're already planning our next stay with Julie.

  • We just got back from Bali and we had a great stay at Julie's place. For anyone, especially couple who wants to get away from the crowd of a hotel stay when you in Ubud, this is a must. You will not be disappointed. Well located and the path to the property is well lighted in the night. Julie's recommendation to the Sedona Spa was a great experience.

She also show us her around her place and we had a great conversation.

  • We had a great time at Julies place! The house is located very central in Ubud, and yet with a countryside feeling, very quiet , only the sounds of nature! And Julie is the perfect host! We had some nice and interesting chats during our stay at Rumah Jepun. Julie, as well as her staff, made us feel welcome and homely. River View Room was perfectly clean and cozy. We are looking forward to come back the next time we go to Ubud! Highly recommended!!

About
The man in the photo is Pasek, he built the house on Ketut Astana's land and you are likely to meet him here... along with the friendly and helpful staff, Gede and Ketut (who can all make great pancakes!). Bali's people, culture, landscape and architecture fascinate and inspire me. The inspiration results in poetry - some poems have been published while others have been turned into lyrics for a Balinese songwriter. Come and visit Ubud and experience the beauty and inspiration for yourself. Bali - a place like no other.
