The small village of Akrotiri lies at the southwestern side of Santorini. The ancient settlement of Akrotiri was discovered in 1967 by the famous archaeologist Spyros Marinatos, who brought into light a whole city hidden under lava and ashes. The prehistoric Akrotiri flourished in 3000 BC, but it was later ruined by the 1500 BC volcano eruption.
Today, many objects and important artifacts, are displayed at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira Town.
A few minutes walk from Akrotiri, you will find the Red Beach, one of the most famous and extraordinary beaches in Santorini island. Gigantic red rocks and reddish pebbles create a unique scenery you won’t find anyplace else.

This was an amazing little apartment. It is set into the local town, on the bus route into Fiera, at the southern end of the Island. Martha is a great host, checking in to make sure everything is okay, helped us rent a car and provided a clean, fully equipped house. Loved the idea of the traditional cave house.
What a wonderful experience to stay in the cave house, and it was great to be in Akrotiri, away from the crowds in Fira. The only disappointment was that the evening bus we tried to catch never came so we had to get a taxi to the port.
Marta y su mamá perfectas anfitrionas! el departamento muy bueno, con maravillosa vista desde el valcon, a la caldera! akrotiri esta un poco alejado , aunque si buscas tranquilidad es fantastico hospedarse ahi!
