My five-year-old condominium complex has a restaurant (email hidden) common area. In the suite there is ample closet space, a big bed and a bathroom with decorative tile. The apartment is cheery with colorful international wall hangings.

The Space

$90/night during Carnaval, New Year's and the Olympics. This room is only going to be offered during New Year's, Carnaval and Olympics . Please ask for the minimum stay.

Occasionally during high season periods when I rent this suite bedroom in the same apartment, I sleep in the living room or in my office and also use the bunk bed bathroom (not the suite bathroom) for showering. There is a third service bathroom without a shower in the apartment which I also would use and is open for other guests' use, too.

Full use of the kitchen. Wireless internet in the apartment. There is also a balcony off the living room.

The apartment is in Catete, 5 minutes walk from beautiful Flamengo Park in the south zone of Rio. It is the biggest park in Rio outside of the Tijuca Forest. Flamengo Park has coconut palms, lots of green grass, sweeping views of the bay, Sugarloaf Mountain, other mountains, the Christ Statue and Niteroi, the city across the bay. It also has basketball courts, long walking paths for running and biking (places to rent bikes in the park), a big beach, but swimming is not advised there. Walking the full length of the park you can go to the national airport and from a hundred or so meters from you watch planes take off over the bay and fly toward Sugarloaf Mountain.

It is a safe neighborhood. It is very centrally located with respect to the beaches and the center of the city --where many Carnaval blocos take place--it is also much closer to the Sambodromo than Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon. It is 15 minutes walk/five minutes by bus from Lapa, the city's most traditional neighborhood for music, culture, dancing, etc which has many popular blocos, or Carnaval street parties. Two metro stops are five minutes walk away. Many city buses are on the surrounding streets. Copacabana beach and Ipanema beach are a 5-15 minute metro ride away.

The apartment is in a very modern, two-year-old eight-building Quartier Carioca condominium complex with a big common area with plants, flowers, small palm trees, benches, etc. that anyone renting the rooms can use. There are two pools, gym and other facilities, as well as a condominium restaurant, but these can be used only by permanent residents of the condominium and will not be available to renters.

The condominium complex has a big security system with many guards at the two entrances. Guests will get their own keys and be free to come and leave as they want, of course.

You can see photos of the Quartier Carioca condominium in Rio de Janeiro by looking it up in (website hidden) images or I have included many here as well. It's a pretty luxurious, spacious condominium and very green.

The owner will also live in the apartment in an unoccupied bedroom or the living room.

  • We had an excellent stay in Rio, Jimmy was a great host who gave us a bunch of tips when we arrived, which was very informative and useful. As we were here during carnival, it was especially good to get some info on the blocos (street parades) and sambadrome, as well as general info on nightlife, food and attractions.
The apartment was in a good location, right next to a large and beautiful park. It was three minutes walk to the Lago de Machado metro stop, which was four metro stops from copacabana beach (maybe 15 to 20 minutes depending on the train) and a 20 minute walk/5 min metro to the suburb of Lapa, where there is some good nightlife.
Building security was fine, was quite safe to walk around the area at night at all hours as we regularly got back anywhere from 2am to 6am in the morning (although may have been different for us as with carnival there were people around at all hours).
The room itself was as advertised with a double bed, ceiling fan and ensuite, and also access to the balcony so got some good light in the morning.
All in all a great stay, would recommend Jimmy as a host anytime!

  • We stayed over the new years period. The ad read two bed apt but host MAY sleep on sofa for a couple of nights.
Well he slept on the sofa every night someone else wasn't and infact he slept on it most days too. He left the apt two afternoons out of ten and NYE. He used a sheet to section off lounge room in the evening. We felt confined to bedroom and had to tip toe around especially in the kitchen which is just an extension of the lounge room.
His kitchen is stocked only with a few plastic plates and cups.
I realise new years is a good opportunity to make cash but he LIED! When questioned about it he became defensive and rude. This created quiet a heavy atmosphere in a very small space. We would have bailed but too late for that. NOT RECOMMENDED.

    Response from James:

Thanks, Katherine, for your feedback.. Please note that overall feedback for my accommodation in more than 40 reviews has been absolutely, overwhelmingly positive. This review is a huge exception! But I strive to learn from all feedback.

So I'm very sorry you were disappointed. To address your comments about the living room sofa bed, I will add photos of it along with the fabric partition in the announcement for the suite - photos of it already are in my other two announcements for the bunk bed room. I will also make it clear in my suite announcement that at times people besides myself sleep in this room.

Other comments you made I am struggling to understand. You stated that I wrote in my description that I ^may^ stay in the living room. But it says that I "will" live in an unoccupied room or the living room. Moreover, my kitchen has much, much more than just "a few plastic plates and cups" It has (for six people) metal, ceramic and plastic plates, cups and metal silverware, tupperware for storing food, many pots and pans, blender, toaster, stove and oven, very big refrigerator, etc.

I sincerely do not know what the incident was that you referred to. Anyway, I thought we had some fun conversations. I gave you suggestions for a physical therapist and bought, free of charge for you and unsolicited by you, round-trip tickets in advance for a scheduled time for the metro on New Year's night.

We would have to work out our differences, but I would host you again. Happy travels, Katherine and Michelle. Future guests, please always let me know if something is not meeting your expectations during your stay so I can make your stay better.

  • We stayed at James´apartment during the new year for 6 nights. The apartment is located in a good place - the shops, restaurants and metro station are really close, also the Flamengo beach is only a short walk. James is nice and friendly, but he didn't give us much advice what to do in Rio. The apartment is in a big and safe building, our room had also a balcony that was good place to sit in the evenings.

  • Jim was very welcoming, and in addition to allowing my two friends and I a place to crash during Carnival, also endeavored to "show us the ropes" of this busy town, taking us to several local "blocos." He is very relaxed and seems to enjoy entertaining fellow ex-pats. His apartment is located in a secure building in a convenient part of Rio, and it isn't far to catch buses that will take you to any of the beaches, the airport, etc.
