Description

The space

Be our guests in our charming mid-century home!
You get a fully furnished side of our double shotgun house. There is also a huge plant covered front porch with a porch swing and bistro table to people watch. Inside is 800 square foot with two bedrooms with queen beds, comforters, pillows, and linens. This is a shotgun house, for those that aren't familiar, one room leads to another as you go to the rear of the house, with the rear bedroom being totally private. The house comes completely furnished with kitchenware, coffee-maker, coffee and tea, microwave, towels, shampoo/conditioner/bath soap, wi-fi, a record player with a light assortment of records, 2 alarm clocks with I-pod/mp3 docks, and a fold-out full sized futon.

Guest access

You will have access to the front porch, the house and the back porch.
If you need to do laundry, just let us know. We have a washer and dryer located in a small shed in our backyard.
We now have bicycles available! 2 women's cruisers and 2 men's cruisers. We charge a small $10 maintenance fee per bike for your entire stay. This just helps to offset the costs of tires, tubes and tune-ups for the bikes. Let us know if you would like to use them and we'll have them ready for you when you arrive.

Interaction with guests

We live right next door and both work in the neighborhood, so we're always around to help and can give you many more suggestions, both locally and tourist oriented. Please don't hesitate to shoot us a text with any questions or concerns you may have.

The neighborhood

In the neighborhood, we're next to Da Joint bbq, Jimmy's Grocery and 1-3 blocks from local bars; J&J's Sports Lounge, Vaughans, and BJ's. There is live music, art galleries, more bars, coffee shops and restaurants, all with a local feel within the bywater/marigny area leading to the French Quarter. We have a welcome basket located on the coffee table with fact sheets, maps, menus and other useful info to help you out through your stay. Press the guest book link at the top of our listing homepage for a map and descriptions of some of our local bars, shops and eateries.

Getting around

You'll be just a 10 minutes bike ride from the quarter, 5 min in a car, and a 30 min walk. The #5 marigny/bywater bus picks up and drops off 2 blocks from the house. It is a day bus that runs until around 6pm. The #88 bus on St. Claude about 4 blocks away runs until 11pm on the weekdays and 24 hours on the weekends. If you're planning on staying out late and doing a little partying, we suggest taking a cab or uber which will run between $6-$10.
We have the cab number printed on our fact sheet in the basket on the coffee table.

Other things to note

If you are expecting 5 star hotel accommodations this will not be the place for you. Our place is clean, comfortable, and in a great area. We are both in the hospitality industry and really work hard to try and make our guests comfy but this rental is still and old house in a historic neighborhood.
Sorry but we do not book guests more than 5 months in advance.
During Mardi Gras, and Jazz Fest we require a 4 night minimum stay. We do not split these weekends.

Checking in and out was seamless. The place was clean, neat and she responded quickly to any questions I had. I would stay at Carmen's place again.

Carmen's place was in a great neighborhood - several fun and yummy places to eat and drink within a few blocks. A quiet reprieve from a day in town. We enjoyed the 1.5 mile walk into the French Quarter along the river through Crescent Park. But it was also less than $10. to get an uber ride back. Carmen was kind enough to have coffee, tea, and 1/2 & 1/2 available for the mornings, although there is also a bakery a few blocks away. The house was very comfortable for 4 people. Even had a great kitchen with all the essentials although we didn't get around to cooking.

Great location. Nice extra amenities: chips, water bottles, toiletries. The layout was really nice for our situation with a toddler. The neighborhood is nice and close to several great restaurants and bars. Carmen was very responsive and helpful.

Staying at Carmen's was a huge part of what made my first trip to New Orleans so special. The home was close enough to the French Quarter and other attractions (rides were less than $10 going from the home to the FQ), but far enough away to experience the city as locals do. I definitely recommend walking around the neighborhood and hitting up Elizabeth's, Bacchanal Wine, and the Joint. The place itself was beautiful, clean, and fully equipped with all of the essentials. My friends and I had no problem making ourselves at home and felt that it was the perfect size for four. Carmen herself was a great host. She communicated with us clearly and kept it touch both before and during our stay. She was incredibly accommodating and was even kind enough to let my friends and I keep our luggage at her place next door while we explored the city for a few more hours post check out. Next time I visit New Orleans, I will be going out of my way to stay here!

Perfect place to stay in NOLA! Gets you out of the French Quarters and allows you to explore the city from a different view. It is very close to local attractions such as French Quarters and Bourbon St. Friendly neighborhood with a great local dive bar. Carmen gave us a good time. Whenever we come back to NOLA we will book with Carmen!
