Clouds Hill is a ninety-acre estate located 20 minutes from Montpelier, the Capitol of Vermont. The 6,800 square foot home sits at an elevation of 1,800 feet and is surrounded on three sides by the dense forest of Vermont’s Allis State Park. There will never be other
homes built around Clouds Hill. It will always be the ultimate in sheer beauty and privacy.
It is impossible for a camera to capture what the human eye sees on the north-facing slope of the property. It is a panorama that Frederick Law Olmsted would have designed had he been in charge of the Creation. The distant Green Mountains—framed by Mount Mansfield and Camel’s Hump, the two highest peaks in Vermont —are the top of a scene whose distant forest gradually slopes down to a tranquil lake in the neighboring valley. The distant becomes intimate. It is a view from a Renaissance painting.
Then there are the clouds….
The house sits like a seat in a movie theater whose screen is a continually changing sky. The Illustrator Maxfield Parrish lived in nearby Cornish, New Hampshire, and the billowing thunderheads he was famous for painting pass by the windows like a moving armada—never static, always changing.
Clouds Hill was completely rebuilt from the ground up. The house maintained its original footprint and 100-year-old chimneys. The exterior is a striking mix of classical and contemporary architecture. The contemporary interior design maximizes the use of large windows to take advantage of the spectacular views and lighting. The interior boasts an open floor plan with three floors offering 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. Additional structures on the property include a barn, 3-car garage, an authentic stone smokehouse and woodshed.
