Don and Karen were very responsive to all communication; they quickly responded to all emails and gave me contact information while they were away. The basement apartment was clearly carefully renovated and set up and ready for us before we arrived, including gassing up the grill. The gardens and patios are lovely.
I stayed with Don and Karen along with 4 adult family members and my infant niece while we were in town to celebrate my sister's graduation in Amherst. Don was a great and accommodating host, and the space worked great as a home base away from home. We cooked meals together and could hang out in the living room area or in spaces outside. I would highly recommend this apartment for a larger group. Thanks for a great experience, Don!
Don and Karen could not have been more welcoming when we stayed with them for our daughter's commencement weekend. Don showed us around the house and gardens, and we were greeted with freshly baked banana bread and a bowl of fresh fruit. The accommodations were just like the description and pictures, and were clean and comfortable. There was plenty of space for me and my husband, son, and mother, and we could have had more people with us, lots of sleeping options. We we only there at night, and it was quiet and cool and easy to get much needed sleep. There were plenty of blankets, pillows, and clean towels. The house is on a main artery (although not at all a noisy location) which made it simple for us to go back and forth from the college. Thank you, Don and Karen, for a most pleasant stay!
Don and Karen were very gracious hosts stocking the fridge with OJ, milk and providing basket of fresh fruit, cereal and Karen's delicious banana bread. Everything was cozy and comfortable. I would recommend Don and Karen's home for visitors.
Don and Karen were so welcoming and kind! We were visiting the area in order to find a house for our move to Amherst and we are so glad we stayed with Don and Karen! The location of their home was perfect, right near UMass, and centrally located for the entire Amherst area. The apartment had plenty of space for us (my husband, myself, and our baby daughter) and was well appointed and comfy. They provided us with enough yummy breakfast for the week and Don made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed every time we saw him. He was just as nice as could be and made our first experience in our new hometown a pleasant one! We highly recommend staying with Don and Karen - you'll be glad you did!
Don and Karen are amazing hosts and I really appreciate having a home away from Home when I visit my college age kids. I high recommend this location and amenities.
So glad I found Don and Karen's place. I went to UMass in 2007 and it was so nice to be back. Don and Karen's place is centrally located, cozy, and a great value. Don was extremely friendly and showed me photos of his home which was moved with a truck! They even left me banana bread

About the Host, Don & Karen
My wife Karen (Speech & Language Pathologist) and I love to travel, cook, play music and garden. We live in a great ninety year old colonial that we moved from Amherst and plan to winter at our place on the beautiful island of Vieques in the Carribbean. We love to share our interests and homes in both locations through AirBNB. The Hadley property features a large furnished 2 bedroom walkout garden apartment. The apartment has two separate accesses. Access to the "mango" bedroom is through an amazing shard mosaic greenhouse from gardens on the edge of wetlands....an amazing sanctuary for a variety of birds and other wildlife. The other entrance is directly off the driveway through a mudroom/laundry. The house is a mile as the crow flies from UMASS and two miles to Amherst College in Amherst Center. Hampshire College is just another mile and a half from the center.
Our Vieques property has similar two-bedroom features in Isabella Segunda, the larger of the two small towns on that tropical paradise.
The Hadley property is six miles away from downtown Northampton and Smith College across the scenic Connecticut River surrounded by the Seven Sisters mountain range.
The area has become western New England's destination for arts, culture and entertainment. The Paradise City Arts & Crafts Festival, Green River Music Fest and Morgan Horse Shows supplement nearby country fairs and harvest festivals.
Vieques has the mountains and turquoise beaches on an island that time has forgotten. Our place on the island is only a few blocks from glass beach and five miles from the village of Esperanza. If you like isolation, solitude and wild horses...be sure to visit the link to Colorful, Convenient in the Carib! Now back to to the "Happy Valley".....
Southern Vermont ski areas are less than an hour away. We're two hours from Boston, three from New York and four from Montreal and Quebec.
At times the whole (five bedroom-3.5 baths) may be available during college graduation weekends. Vieques, off the coast of the east end of Puerto Rico, can be reached by a ferry that lands a few blocks from Casita Linda or by one of four small airlines i.e. Cape Air or Vieques Airlink.
