It's a nice basement apartment with two bedrooms, one bath and a kitchen/ living area. Right outside in the "mudroom" there are washer and dryer we were allowed to use. That was a big help. The covered patio is cute. We sat there in the evening to chat and played Don's guitar. Karen and Don are both very nice and friendly. We were even treated with welcome banana bread, fruit, milk and juice, which became our breakfast. The location is convenient and the place is pleasant. It suits the needs of us, two couples traveling together.
Don and Karen are awesome hosts. Their basement apartment is HUGE, charmingly decorated, and very reasonably priced. Their home is situated among beautiful gardens in country surroundings. One end of the apt. has a patio door to a uniquely mosaic-decorated sunroom with a clear roof, so sunlight actually pours into the second bedroom. We enjoyed sitting there for tea and snacks, and the bright background made for excellent selfies. The roomy kitchen is particularly well-equipped, and the fridge and dining area are stocked with juice, milk, coffee, banana bread and fruit, so you have your breakfast right there. A few things to be aware of: The steps down to the entrance are steep (there is another set to the sunroom which is open to the garden). You pass through a mechanical room (stacked washer dryer!) to get to the apartment door, and it had a musty or "cellar" smell from time to time. We didn't notice the smell at all once inside the apartment, but others could be more sensitive. The bathroom I would call more moderate sized than small, but the corner sink is truly small, I'd say 10 - 11 in. diameter. Not really a problem unless you have an elaborate morning shaving ritual -- it would be tight. The place was a bit of challenge to find at night -- two roads run together so there are two sets of the same house numbers. We finally fixed on a landmark (a tractor crossing sign) which helped. I would certainly stay there again; we were in MA for a family get together and I've recommended this bnb to my SIL for future visiting family members. Ask Don or Karen how the house got onto the property, amazing story.
We had a lovely time at Don and Karen's house. The kitchen was stocked with breakfast items and the house was clean and welcoming. Our hosts made it very easy for us to come and go as we needed, and we loved having coffee in the mosaic patio outdoors. Thanks so much, Karen and Don!
Don and Karen were excellent hosts and made our stay in their lovely home a wonderful experience. We were quite comfortable in the basement apartment with everything that we needed for a relaxing weekend getaway. They kindly provided some breakfast essentials, including homemade banana bread! Beautiful landscaping and a convenient location enhanced the experience as well.
I had a fantastic time in Amherst. Don and Karen are wonderful hosts, very attentive to their guests and extremely knowledgeable about the area. The house is located not far from the school, and it's an enjoyable walk into town, especially in the long summer evenings. I truly enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend their house as a convenient base in Amherst!
Don and Karen were easy to reach and communicate with before our trip, and very friendly and low key while we were there. The pictures of the space posted here are very representative, and we fit 6 people plus a baby in there for two nights pretty comfortably. The bathroom and shower are small, so that could be an issue for some people to keep in mind. Overall though, perfect for our needs and a great find.
Great location if you are looking to be close, but not in town. Friendly and helpful host. Provided cereal and coffee which was a plus. Not to mention the Banana Bread!
It would actually take a much more skilled writer than I to sum up the extraordinary experience my family & I had in Massachusetts, thanks in LARGE part, to Don & Karen. I wanted a wonderful "New England experience" for my family: check. I wanted super clean & comfortable, yet affordable accommodations: check. I wanted privacy & a "let us know if there's anything else you need" type of guy: DOUBLE CHECK: that's Don. The fresh flowers, fruit bowl, coffee & that famous banana bread for our first morning were unexpected but sooo appreciated! Coming from far West Texas, we had a terrific week - in LARGE part to Don & Karen's warm welcome!
..........just sayin': they are really cool folks!
I stayed with my girlfriend and my parents for a weekend during April. We had a fantastic time exploring the area and this place was a brilliant base from which to see the local towns (Amherst and Northampton) and some of the beautiful surrounding scenery (Berkshires).
Don was a very welcoming host and very friendly and accommodating throughout our stay. There we no issues at all with check in and the place was just as expected from the photos and the listing details. It was cozy, well appointed, clean and the beds were all comfortable.
We were blessed with excellent weather for our time in this great little area and were sad to leave to return to the city. I would highly recommend this place and would not hesitate to stay here again or recommend it to others.
Don and Karen were fantastic hosts in a great location. I've stayed at a number of airbnb locations and this place ranks among the best. Beautiful rooms and very spacious. They brought us banana bread during a stressful weekend shooting video at a conference on the campus of University of Massachusetts which was great.
