The Space

The home is a classic center hall colonial that features a beautiful large, new, furnished, basement apartment. The apartment has two private entrances on each end of the home. One is off of the driveway with plenty of parking and the other through a shard-mosaic greenhouse from the gardens. (although not offered through this listing, the whole house may be made available for larger parties on occasion. .

This property is set in the farm country with a super convenient location close to the Five College\Amherst and Northampton centers. The apartment is fully furnished and the kitchen has modern appliances, granite counter tops and a nice dining area.
You'll have your own tiled entry with separate washer & dryer. A large bedrooms with a queen bed and the second with a trundle bed, along with an office\den with a futon, can accomodate six guests or eight with the comfortable pullout couch\hide-a-bed There are comfortable Scandanavian leather reading chairs and two desks with comfy work chairs and computers w\ high speed (4G) Internet connection. (Or you can use your own WiFi connection from your laptops, SmartPhones or IPad) the high definition TV has BlueRay 3D and All Share capability. The living room has comfy fabric sofas. The tiled bathroom is new with a large shower but is on the small side.
Our property borders the Mill River estuary of the Connecticut (and a small damned section of Puffers Pond nearby) which is great for swimming, fishing and birding.
We're surrounded by horse farms and just down the road from the UMASS' farm where llamas, horses, and many other farm animals live. It is just over a mile from the Mullin Center (NCAA D1 hoops & hockey and large concerts) and Fine Arts Center (world-class performance venue) on the campus of UMass and convenient to the other campuses of the Five College Consortium. (Amherst, Smith, Mt. Holyoke and Hampshire)

We have an abundance of great restaurants, museums (The Mead, Eric Carle, Smith and Mt. Holyoke, Yiddish Book Museum), music venues in Northampton (NoHo or 'Hamp endearing names depending on whether you're a local or visiting). The Basketball Hall of Fame, the Museums at the Quadrangle and the college campuses of Springfield are just 30 minutes away. The "Big E" (Eastern States Exposition) is hosts New England's largest fair and trade shows and Six Flags New England amusement parks are also 30 minutes from the house. If you love the outdoors, there are wonderful trails to hike, thirty miles of bike paths, snowshoeing and skiing.

Amtrak's Vermonter is close by and public transportation is convenient. We are just over an hour to the Berkshires and even closer to Southern Vermont's border. The Berkshires features Tanglewood (the summer home of the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops), the Williamstown and Stockbridge Theatre Festivals and the Williams College, Clark Art, Norman Rockell, Chesterwood and MassMOCA museums.
Southern Vermont and Berkshire skiing are close by and easy to get to. We are two hours to Boston, three hours to New York and four to Montreal and Quebec!

Pricing starts at $100 per room per night for two people. Special offers can be made for longer stays. There are two decks and seasonal hot tub. Our greenhouse features an amazing shard mosaic display shown in the some of the pictures on this site.

We offer a welcome basket of baked goods, cereal, coffee and teas and stock the refrigerator with milk and juice for you to enjoy upon your first morning. After that, you are on your own as far as food goes.... that is unless you want Don to cook for you and your guests and serve on the deck or dining room.

We like to travel and entertain. Ask us about our place on the beautiful little island of Vieques off the coast of Puerto Rico with it's secluded Carribean beaches and wild horses!

  • It's a nice basement apartment with two bedrooms, one bath and a kitchen/ living area. Right outside in the "mudroom" there are washer and dryer we were allowed to use. That was a big help. The covered patio is cute. We sat there in the evening to chat and played Don's guitar. Karen and Don are both very nice and friendly. We were even treated with welcome banana bread, fruit, milk and juice, which became our breakfast. The location is convenient and the place is pleasant. It suits the needs of us, two couples traveling together.

  • Don and Karen are awesome hosts. Their basement apartment is HUGE, charmingly decorated, and very reasonably priced. Their home is situated among beautiful gardens in country surroundings. One end of the apt. has a patio door to a uniquely mosaic-decorated sunroom with a clear roof, so sunlight actually pours into the second bedroom. We enjoyed sitting there for tea and snacks, and the bright background made for excellent selfies. The roomy kitchen is particularly well-equipped, and the fridge and dining area are stocked with juice, milk, coffee, banana bread and fruit, so you have your breakfast right there. A few things to be aware of: The steps down to the entrance are steep (there is another set to the sunroom which is open to the garden). You pass through a mechanical room (stacked washer dryer!) to get to the apartment door, and it had a musty or "cellar" smell from time to time. We didn't notice the smell at all once inside the apartment, but others could be more sensitive. The bathroom I would call more moderate sized than small, but the corner sink is truly small, I'd say 10 - 11 in. diameter. Not really a problem unless you have an elaborate morning shaving ritual -- it would be tight. The place was a bit of challenge to find at night -- two roads run together so there are two sets of the same house numbers. We finally fixed on a landmark (a tractor crossing sign) which helped. I would certainly stay there again; we were in MA for a family get together and I've recommended this bnb to my SIL for future visiting family members. Ask Don or Karen how the house got onto the property, amazing story.

  • We had a lovely time at Don and Karen's house. The kitchen was stocked with breakfast items and the house was clean and welcoming. Our hosts made it very easy for us to come and go as we needed, and we loved having coffee in the mosaic patio outdoors. Thanks so much, Karen and Don!

  • Don and Karen were excellent hosts and made our stay in their lovely home a wonderful experience. We were quite comfortable in the basement apartment with everything that we needed for a relaxing weekend getaway. They kindly provided some breakfast essentials, including homemade banana bread! Beautiful landscaping and a convenient location enhanced the experience as well.

  • I had a fantastic time in Amherst. Don and Karen are wonderful hosts, very attentive to their guests and extremely knowledgeable about the area. The house is located not far from the school, and it's an enjoyable walk into town, especially in the long summer evenings. I truly enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend their house as a convenient base in Amherst!

  • Don and Karen were easy to reach and communicate with before our trip, and very friendly and low key while we were there. The pictures of the space posted here are very representative, and we fit 6 people plus a baby in there for two nights pretty comfortably. The bathroom and shower are small, so that could be an issue for some people to keep in mind. Overall though, perfect for our needs and a great find.

  • Great location if you are looking to be close, but not in town. Friendly and helpful host. Provided cereal and coffee which was a plus. Not to mention the Banana Bread!

  • It would actually take a much more skilled writer than I to sum up the extraordinary experience my family & I had in Massachusetts, thanks in LARGE part, to Don & Karen. I wanted a wonderful "New England experience" for my family: check. I wanted super clean & comfortable, yet affordable accommodations: check. I wanted privacy & a "let us know if there's anything else you need" type of guy: DOUBLE CHECK: that's Don. The fresh flowers, fruit bowl, coffee & that famous banana bread for our first morning were unexpected but sooo appreciated! Coming from far West Texas, we had a terrific week - in LARGE part to Don & Karen's warm welcome!
..........just sayin': they are really cool folks!

  • I stayed with my girlfriend and my parents for a weekend during April. We had a fantastic time exploring the area and this place was a brilliant base from which to see the local towns (Amherst and Northampton) and some of the beautiful surrounding scenery (Berkshires).

Don was a very welcoming host and very friendly and accommodating throughout our stay. There we no issues at all with check in and the place was just as expected from the photos and the listing details. It was cozy, well appointed, clean and the beds were all comfortable.

We were blessed with excellent weather for our time in this great little area and were sad to leave to return to the city. I would highly recommend this place and would not hesitate to stay here again or recommend it to others.

  • Don and Karen were fantastic hosts in a great location. I've stayed at a number of airbnb locations and this place ranks among the best. Beautiful rooms and very spacious. They brought us banana bread during a stressful weekend shooting video at a conference on the campus of University of Massachusetts which was great.

About
My wife Karen (Speech & Language Pathologist) and I love to travel, cook, play music and garden. We live in a great house with a large furnished 1 bedroom walkout garden apartment. The apartment has two separate accesses; one through an amazing shard mosaic greenhouse into gardens on the edge of wetlands, a sanctuary for a variety of birds and other wildlife. The other entrance is directly off the driveway. The house is a mile as the crow flies from UMASS and two miles to Amherst College and Amherst Center. Downtown Northampton and Smith College are six miles away just across the scenic Connecticut River surrounded by the Seven Sisters mountain range. The area has become western New England's destination for arts, culture and entertainment. Southern Vermont ski areas are less than an hour away. We're two hours from Boston, three from New York and four from Montreal and Quebec. At times the whole (five bedroom-3.5 baths) may be available during college graduation weekends. Also ask about our place on the little island of Vieques off the coast of Puerto Rico.
