About This Listing
If you like what you see here in this House of the Well but the calendar is full, please do check out the other spaces available here: there are two adorable rooms each with its own private bath, plus kitchen privileges!
Adorable studio apartment with its own independent entrance, also connected to the main house. Full of light and very cozy. Completely-equipped kitchen with all-new good knives and batterie de cuisine; all sheets (flannel for winter, cotton for summer!) and towels provided.
A sweet small terrace full of plants and lovely views. Completely independent entrance but may also be entered through the main house. You are invited to enjoy the azotea (roof terrace) and central patio.
Please note that to arrive here one must walk: either one walks up or one walks down, but walk one must. Guanajuato was not built with the automobile in mind ;=))
We are 8 minutes’ walk from the Juárez, Cervantes, and Principal Theatres and from the Jardín de la Unión; some 12 minutes’ walk from the principal building of the University. This place is ideal for a visiting scholar or student at the Uni.
Easy to arrive on foot, via minibus or taxi; there is also a locked access down from the Panorámica.
WASHING MACHINE available in the main house: I ask 50 pesos per load to help cover wear and tear on the machine, and I provide detergent.
Light averages 70 pesos/month. Gas is basically under your own control: to minimize usage you must remember to turn up the boiler before you bathe and turn it back down afterwards! Average is 200 pesos/month.
PARKING ... is available with my neighbour just above on the Panorámica: short-term, 150 pesos/night; longer-term, 350 pesos/month; anything in between is negotiable.
This is a people's, not a rich-folks' neighbourhood: so you will hear roosters and dogs and the occasional outburst of ranchera music; but it is all very agreeable.
As of 1 January 2013 I am raising my prices for the first time since I started hosting on AIRBNB, mostly because I want to be able to better pay the woman who helps me with housework. People who do this work tend to be very underpaid here, and I would like to do my part to remedy that situation.
Most important of all, the great common area of the city of Guanajuato and its cultural offering, astounding for a city of this size (population ca. 175,000). Between book presentations, art openings, the university’s Cine-Club, poetry readings, concerts, and lectures on various topics, one could be occupied five nights out of seven, and two or three afternoons. Doesn’t leave much time to enjoy the increasing number of good restaurants here!
Here in the house, you are warmly invited to come up to the roof-terrace where the sun hits first in the morning; and to enjoy the sunset with a glass of something. In reality, all the public spaces in this house are here to be enjoyed: the azotea, the central patio, the little north patio with the laundry.
Really, THE ONLY OFF-LIMITS AREA IS THE PIANO ROOM WHICH IS MY OWN WORK-SPACE.
And of course, if there’s a house-concert here in the Casa del Pozo, you are warmly invited!
CLEANING: Weekly cleaning is included in your rent. If you’d like Sra Yolanda to come in and tidy up in between times, the cost is 100 pesos per cleaning.
Each room comes with kitchen privileges: I ask only that you take good care of my pots and pans, my knives, and the Talavera dishes.
Interaction with Guests
This is the home of a working artist. I try to share this space with my guests, however short or long their stay here may be. If I am here, I am as available as my work permits. And as always, if there is a concert here in this House of the Well, my guests are cordially invited!
This is a people's, not a rich folks', neighbourhood, in an Ibero-American city. So you will hear goats, dogs, and the occasional outburst of ranchera music: but it is all generally quite inoffensive. Éste es un barrio amable, vivo, seguro.
There are many convenient ways to get around here. To start with, walking! It is faster to get to many places in Guanajuato on foot than it is on wheels. However, we also have good public transit. There is a mini-bus stop right at the foot of my callejón. You can arrive above on another mini-bus and walk about 200M to the door. Or you can take a taxi to arrive above.
Other Things to Note
The cultural offering in Guanajuato is extraordinary considering the size of this city: 175,000 people. Between book presentations, poetry readings, concerts, and other events, one could be busy here five out of seven nights of the week, and several afternoons. Barely leaves time to enjoy the increasing number of good restaurants we have here!
1. Two friendly dogs and a cat also live here, thus my "no pets" request. (In any case they are not allowed in the bedrooms.)
2. Smoking OK but only outside, please.
3. Take good care of kitchen equipment like good knives and pots!
4. Please make advance arrangements so that I or someone else may meet you and bring you here -- airport pickup available US$50, bus terminal US$15.
We absolutely loved our stay at Ana's. The view from the roof was spectacular (we drank coffee there every morning) and the apartment was cheerful and very well-appointed with everything we could have needed, including plenty of purified water, a hot shower, comfortable bed, umbrellas, market bags, and delicious coffee. One thing to note-- bringing ear plus for the late night/early morning sounds of dogs and roosters is reccomended!
Ramiro picked us up from the airport and he took us for delicious tacos on our way into town at Los Potrillos and gave us reat info on the city (we reccomend both Ramiro and Los potrillos!) Ana's orientation guide gave us lots of ideas for where to eat and what to do, and she was also quick to offer additional info and reccomendations as needed. She was also very responsive before and during our stay with arrangements and questions. A really great host, and an exceptional apartment.
General Guanajuato info: our favorite splaces were Plaza San Fernando (leafy, cool place to relax), the terrace at Hotel Chocolate (beautiful view) and Clave Azul bar/restaurant (great margaritas and food, very friendly bartender).
Staying at "The House Of The Well", in the apartment for a month. was a fantastic match for me ! The apartment has everything you need to just turn the key and move in . The view from the apartment and the entire hacienda are breath taking. The house if full of life. Beautiful garden plants and flowers, three levels of vibrant color . SO beautiful. Two amazing dog -friends, and a welcoming kitty who loves to come in and visit if allowed. Yes, you will hear roosters, and the local roof top dogs barking. Remember, this is Mexico ! Authentic, immersion at it's greatest ! Earplugs or a "White Noise phone App." help with the roosters and working dogs who do not read a clock ! Quiet is not the way to describe TRUE Mexico, and this is the real deal.
With Ana playing her Grand piano upstairs, you will be able to sit on your own patio, or on the amazing roof top, and just observe and listen to her glorious music. It is truly a gift to your mind.
As a woman, traveling alone, I felt completely safe and secure in Ana's home, the security is thorough ! You will not go without anything you need, Ana sees to that. The bed is comfortable, the water is hot, the kitchen complete, privacy is absolute. Bring your good hiking shoes, as you WILL be walking and climbing steep stairs, both down and up. All the better, with the exercise equaling out the fantastic indulgence of the bakeries , breads, and food below in the city!
With the warmth of Ana, her pets, and beautiful gracious Guanajuato , you will feel a true authentic Mexican environment embracing you, welcoming you, with open arms. The "House of The Well" brings time to pause, look, listen and breathe. Both the day and night views , and all of the sounds of life are something you will never experience again.
What a wonderful "storage"of memories you will take with you when you leave this special place ! I will forever be able to open that storage box of memories of my stay, and drift off again, to Guanajuato , Ana, and "The House Of The Well".
If you like the colors of Mexico, and I’m not just talking about the bright pink, blue, yellow and purple of the House of the Well exterior, you get a colorful (in the best sense) Guanajuato experience, when you stay with Ana Cervantes. My husband and I were with Ana for a month, February - March 2015. (Ana offers a terrific monthly rate, and a month gives you plenty of time to experience the corners this unique city.) If you can’t spend a month in Guanajuato, give yourself time to explore. Maybe take a week of Spanish at the nearby Escuela Falcon or an art workshop. Try the Friday night symphony. Find a café (there are many) to frequent. Write from Ana’s rooftop terrace overlooking the city. Discover how many different ways you can walk down the hill through the maze of callejones to the Jardin. No matter which way you go, it won’t take you more than 10 minutes. It’s been noted that Ana is a wonderful host, but we’ll underscore the comment. Ana not only shares her kitchen, she offers her extensive knowledge of the city, her personal connections, and lots of conversation. Over the month, we stayed in two of Ana’s rooms, the Patio Room and the Studio Apartment. Both were very comfortable, well lit, and brightly decorated with Mexican art. We also especially enjoyed the company of the others who stayed at Ana’s. You’ve probably read that Ana is a concert pianist. We loved climbing the steps up to Ana’s in the afternoon to the sound of her practicing. Our month was a very special time. Thank you, Ana!
We really enjoyed our stay with Ana at the House of the Well. Ana was such a great host, and we felt arrived at a "home away from home". We loved the culture, the people and the experience of Mexico in Guanajuato and Ana was a connection to the heart of the city. We definitely recommend at visit here, and look forward to our next trip.
I spent two months in Ana's depto and truly made myself a home there. The apartment is beautiful and has everything you could possibly need, including a wandering cat (if you so desire to let him in) who will help you do yoga in the mornings. It has its own entrance off of the patio, so you have your own space and can come and go as you please. Ana has a vibrant sense of taste - the kind that feels warm, welcoming, bright and energetic. The studio is furnished with many artesanal items from around Mexico and also has incredible views of the city. The roof is AMAZING.
Walking to and from the centro is short (about 5 minutes down and 10 up). Be prepared to climb a lot of stairs back up (I mean, this IS Guanajuato) unless you would prefer to take a taxi to the Panoramica and walk down.
Lastly and most importantly, you will never meet such a warm and inviting host as Ana. She makes sure that you have everything you need and answers any questions you might have about the city. She has amazing insight, considering her experience working as a musician and befriending what seems like every human alive in Guanajuato.
I made a home here and a lasting friendship with Ana. What a unique experience, full of lasting memories! I can't wait to return!
My stay in Ana's studio apartment totally exceeded my expectations! The unit had everything I needed for my ten day stay and it had the most glorious view. I'm a total animal lover so one of the highlights for me was walking the dogs in the morning with Ana and hanging out with her cat Zumo in the apartment in the evenings. When I first arrived Ana gave me a great tour of Guanajuato, pointing out great places to eat and get supplies for the apartments kitchen.
Be sure to get Ramiro to pick you up from the airport when you arrive! After a long day in transit to Leon his friendly face was great to see.
Ana is such a wonderful, kind and friendly person to get to know and I can't wait to come back to Guanajuato to stay with her again!
We stayed at Ana's for 3 days in June and would have loved to stay much longer!
Ana is the perfect hostess. She arranged to have us picked up at the airport and gave us lots of infos about Guanajuato and how to get around.
Her apartment has the most beautiful view of the town (be prepared for a lot of steps). It is very clean, cheerful and comfortable.
We totally recommend her place.
