The space

If you like what you see here in this House of the Well but the calendar is full, please do check out the other spaces available here: there are two adorable rooms each with its own private bath, plus kitchen privileges!

Adorable studio apartment with its own independent entrance, also connected to the main house. Full of light and very cozy. Completely-equipped kitchen with all-new good knives and batterie de cuisine; all sheets (flannel for winter, cotton for summer!) and towels provided.
A sweet small terrace full of plants and lovely views. Completely independent entrance but may also be entered through the main house. You are invited to enjoy the azotea (roof terrace) and central patio.

Please note that to arrive here one must walk: either one walks up or one walks down, but walk one must. Guanajuato was not built with the automobile in mind ;=))

We are 8 minutes’ walk from the Juárez, Cervantes, and Principal Theatres and from the Jardín de la Unión; some 12 minutes’ walk from the principal building of the University. This place is ideal for a visiting scholar or student at the Uni.

Easy to arrive on foot, via minibus or taxi; there is also a locked access down from the Panorámica.

WASHING MACHINE available in the main house: I ask 50 pesos per load to help cover wear and tear on the machine, and I provide detergent.

Light averages 70 pesos/month. Gas is basically under your own control: to minimize usage you must remember to turn up the boiler before you bathe and turn it back down afterwards! Average is 200 pesos/month.

PARKING ... is available with my neighbour just above on the Panorámica: short-term, 150 pesos/night; longer-term, 350 pesos/month; anything in between is negotiable.

This is a people's, not a rich-folks' neighbourhood: so you will hear roosters and dogs and the occasional outburst of ranchera music; but it is all very agreeable.

As of 1 January 2013 I am raising my prices for the first time since I started hosting on AIRBNB, mostly because I want to be able to better pay the woman who helps me with housework. People who do this work tend to be very underpaid here, and I would like to do my part to remedy that situation.

Guest access

Most important of all, the great common area of the city of Guanajuato and its cultural offering, astounding for a city of this size (population ca. 175,000). Between book presentations, art openings, the university’s Cine-Club, poetry readings, concerts, and lectures on various topics, one could be occupied five nights out of seven, and two or three afternoons. Doesn’t leave much time to enjoy the increasing number of good restaurants here!

Here in the house, you are warmly invited to come up to the roof-terrace where the sun hits first in the morning; and to enjoy the sunset with a glass of something. In reality, all the public spaces in this house are here to be enjoyed: the azotea, the central patio, the little north patio with the laundry.
And of course, if there’s a house-concert here in the Casa del Pozo, you are warmly invited!
CLEANING: Weekly cleaning is included in your rent. If you’d like Sra Yolanda to come in and tidy up in between times, the cost is 100 pesos per cleaning.

Each room comes with kitchen privileges: I ask only that you take good care of my pots and pans, my knives, and the Talavera dishes.

Interaction with guests

This is the home of a working artist. I try to share this space with my guests, however short or long their stay here may be. If I am here, I am as available as my work permits. And as always, if there is a concert here in this House of the Well, my guests are cordially invited!

Other things to note

The cultural offering in Guanajuato is extraordinary considering the size of this city: 175,000 people. Between book presentations, poetry readings, concerts, and other events, one could be busy here five out of seven nights of the week, and several afternoons. Barely leaves time to enjoy the increasing number of good restaurants we have here!

Spent an incredible 5 weeks in Ana's amazing studio apartment while studying Spanish. Clean, comfortable, and impeccably decorated with outstanding views and a well-equipped kitchen-- I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay during my first visit to Guanajuato. Unlike many rentals, Ana's studio is both designed to be livable and full of unique, artistic touches. As I love to cook, I was so happy to find a kitchen actually designed and outfitted for cooking. I especially appreciated the coffee grinder and stove top espresso maker -- the local roaster, Café Tal, is nearby and terrific. The apartment is filled with beautiful touches from local art to Talavera dishware to textiles from Oaxaca, anything but "cookie cutter." Ana's house is located close to downtown (10 minutes or less walking) but far enough away that you don't feel in the center of the nightlife, which I consider perfect. She is within easy walking distance of both the Falcon and don Quijote language schools as well. As noted, be prepared to walk! You'll definitely work off all the gorditas and helados climbing back up to the house. But, you'll be rewarded by the amazing views and it is also quite easy (and cheap) to take a cab home if needed. What really made my stay, however, was how incredibly welcoming and thoughtful Ana is. From showing me around my first day to recommending restaurants to taking me to her favorite pottery studio, Ana's kindness helped me navigate the city with ease and made my month long stay immensely more enjoyable. I also highly recommend working with Ramiro, he made getting to and from the airport a breeze and I enjoyed learning about the history of the area from him on a trip to Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende. I can't think of a better way to spend vacation than exploring the beautiful city of Guanajuato by day and watching the sunset from Ana's terrace with a glass of wine, listening to her beautiful piano playing, and hanging out with her incredibly sweet dogs. Thank you so much, Ana! Hope to be back soon!

After reading reviews regarding Ana's space - my expectations were high. I'm pleased to say that Anna and the casa exceeded them in every way. It was a very comfortable stay. The apartment is neat and logically laid out. The apartment had a fully operational kitchen. If you chose to, you could bring groceries and never have to leave. And she's located just up the hill from my favorite coffeehouse, café tal.

Guanajuato!!! This city has an amazing vibe and Ana's place is greatly situated to take advantage of your visit. Ana has a great love for this place and its culture, which made it is easy to get into the flow upon arrival. She was able to provide an orientation to town on day one. Getting around Guanajuato is a little confusing because of its non-linear layout and the numerous callejones (alley ways) that meander through the place. NUMBER ONE RULE ABOUT GUANAJUATO: Be prepared to walk on unstable, narrow, and uneven paths. Bring good shoes. Ana will provide you with a detailed packet with plenty of noteworthy tips. We stayed in the apartment for almost a week and really enjoyed being a part of the household. We had access to the terrace in addition to the amenities of the apartment (kitchen, bathroom, dining table, lounging chair, and good wifi connection). The bed was too firm for my taste, but there were extra pillows, blankets, and comforter that helped to make it much more comfortable. The space of the apartment was nice too, as we were able to lay out two yoga mats to do stretching and other exercises together. We were also in need of wifi for work purposes and the connection was great. Ok, power did go out one time, but luckily not on a work day. The location is good, too, but do note that it is good uphill walk away from town. You will almost surely begin to break a sweat each time you return home. It's about 7-10 minutes to Jardin de la Union, 7-10 minutes to Cafe Tal or Las Embajadores, and 15-20 minutes from the Alhondiga. In summary, if you would like to meet someone who is really in touch with the culture and lifestyle of Guanajuato, then join Ana at the Casa del Pozo... P.S. Take her recommendation of working with Ramiro on transportation. Great guy, really knowledgeable and self-reportedly a great dancer!

I spent a week in the apartment at Ana's house on my first visit to Guanajuato. Ana's house and her hospitality played a big part in making it a great trip. I booked the apartment partly because of the pictures on airbnb, which look really good, but the house feels even nicer and more beautiful in person. My flight arrived early in the morning (way before official check-in time) and Ana helped out with arranging transportation from Leon airport. She walked me down to the center of town to get me oriented and pointed out various points of interest and recommended restaurants, many of which I enjoyed over the course of my stay. She has a long typewritten document in the apartment that provides all the information you need to know about living in the apartment ((URL HIDDEN) about maid service), and lots of info about recommended spots in Guanajuato. The apartment is bright and airy, an appealing and well-designed living space with a great view overlooking town. It's a very pleasant place to be. It's well-outfitted for a longer stay, excellent kitchen and lots of storage space. I spent quite a bit of time exploring different areas of Guanajuato, and this neighborhood was one of the best; I never wished I had stayed in a different location. It's located just up from the Theater District, which I assume is the preferred part of "downtown" for most visitors to Guanajuato. It is a 10-12 minute walk up lots of stairs to get to the house so isn't appropriate for everyone (but you can use cabs if you want). There's also a fair amount of noise from barking dogs and crowing roosters, which could be annoying if you require or expect a quieter spot.

We had a great stay in Ana's studio apartment in the enchanting city of Guanajuato! The view was terrific and the walk to and from town convenient and good exercise. It is in such a great location overlooking the main landmarks of the central part of the city though it was a bit confusing finding our way back our first night after dinner in town. That was all part of the adventure though. Ana was very friendly and extremely helpful in giving us tips on what to do and where to eat. We felt very comfortable at her place and were sad to leave.

We had a great four week stay in Ana's studio apartment. It was exactly as promised. We loved the kitchen, especially the electric orange squeezer for making fresh orange juice. Ana told us about the Cafetal where we got fresh roasted beans which we used to make our morning coffee to drink on the upstairs terrace every morning. There are markets all within a reasonable walk where we could find everything we needed when we decided to cook. We also loved to eat out and made some friends at places where we went regularly. The walk into and back from town is a hike, but we found multiple variations in routes and enjoyed the exercise. Afternoon naps were often accompanied by lovely piano music from the upstairs practice room. In addition to providing our own private piano music at the house, Ana is a great resource for music events in Guanajuato of which there are many. We recommend Ana's house as a place to stay and Ana as a hostess. And can't forget to mention the friendly pets, Estrella and Jamona, the dogs and Zumo, the cat.

Ana welcomed me warmly and eagerly helped when I had questions. She considerately provided ample drinking water, coffee or tea and milk, which meant for this stay in Guanajuato I did not have to go out for basic supplies after traveling. After settling in, she even walked me down to an excellent restaurant, Los Campos. The studio is in a lovely location with a great view of the town below. It is also very well set up and stocked. Note that the uphill walk back to the studio requires a certain level of fitness, though transport is available to the upper entrance.
