Driving here will teach you patience
Driving in Costa Rica requires more patience and street smarts than elsewhere. In addition, roads and bridges are not always in perfect shape.
Still, a visitor or potential expat will find many welcoming and helpful Costa Ricans throughout the land.
The virtue of patience is important because certain rules and traditions can turn a dented fender into a massive
traffic jam. The rule here is that motorists must leave their damaged vehicle in the exact spot where the accident took place. Never mind that the slightly damaged vehicles block a key highway at the peak of Friday's rush hour.
That rule is in place so that accident investigators can accurately assess blame. The state insurance agency has crews of investigators working 24 hours a day. Still, one may take hours to arrive at the latest scene.
So two lanes of a major artery can be reduced to a single file of vehicles crawling around a crash site. Exchanging telephone numbers in anticipation of a later settlement of damages is unacceptable here.
Visitors and expats should not travel at night unless absolutely necessary. Many surprises lurk on the roadways. Highway designers do not have new arrivals in mind. Then there are the drunks and the crazy motorcycle drivers. A high percentage of serious accidents happen at night.pot hols
Naturally the road signs are in Spanish, but that is not a big problem. Usually the problem is the absence of road signs. San José, for example, is not very friendly to tourists. If a driver does not know the route, the city can resemble a maze.
A good practice is to make extensive use of taxis in the capital if only to learn the routes. The major street called the Paseo de la Vaca got that name because it was designed by cows coming home at night from pasture. Traffic officials also love one-way streets, which can be a pain if a motorist is not going that way.
Even in daylight, driving can be dicey. One recent major tragedy took place because a tourist swerved to avoid a hole in the pavement of a bridge. The tourist and his wife were unharmed but nearby vehicles collided, and one was a gasoline tanker.
A pair of tourists last week were surprised to find workers digging ditches across the gravel road from their jungle hotel. This was drainage work, but there were no alternate routes or provision to get vehicles across the open ditch. Time for another cup of coffee.
Motorist must expect the unexpected at all times. Among the most unexpected is the way gentle, helpful Costa Ricans turn into raving maniacs behind the wheel. Some psychologist link this to exercises in personal freedom in a restrictive society. Then there are the taxi and bus drivers.
For a time, new arrivals in rental cars were targets of crooks. The trick was to puncture the tires of vehicles. Some claim that this might have been inside jobs at some rental agencies. The tire would go flat on the route from the airport pickup to the hotel, and crooks would arrive to help. What might follow could be a simple theft of luggage to a full-scale stickup.
Although there have been fewer reports of this type of crime after police agencies began stressing prevention, the best bet is to drive on the flat tire to some secure spot, such as the guarded parking area of a nearby hotel. The rental agency might collect for the tire and rim, but that is preferable to the alternative.
A punctured tire also is possible at the local gas station when a motorist pulls up in a rental vehicle or perhaps one loaded with luggage. Someone must be with the vehicle at all times.
Tourists know that their foreign driver's license is respected here. The squeeze comes when they chose to move here.

'Casa Tres Monos'
My wife and two children enjoyed three wonderful nights at Casa Tres Monos in April of 2015. The house is in an amazing location. We definitely recommend a 4x4 or AWD vehicle when visiting Costa Rica and Casa is one of those ideal reasons why. If you want to get away from it all you're going to have drive some roads that are no joke. The location overlooking the Pacific Ocean is idyllic. If that weren't enough, the trees surrounding the property are rife with birds of all kinds. We saw hummers, multiple species of toucans, parrots, and more that we couldn't identify. It was so relaxing just kicking back on the deck and listening to the sounds of nature all around. We stayed at four different lodgings during our 10-night tour of Costa Rica and Casa was our favorite. We and the kids had our own separate spaces. The main bedroom had easily the most comfortable bed of our trip and the kids really enjoyed sleeping in the loft. The bathrooms are large and nicely appointed and the showers were head and shoulders above any others we experienced. Remember, you're staying the wild. There are bugs and bees and we even opened the door to a snake one evening! That's all part of the allure of Casa. The caretaker, Mile, did a great job keeping Casa clean while we explored the area each day and we took advantage of her laundry service as well which exceeded our expectations. She and her family also prepared a traditional Tico meal for us which was among the best dining experiences we had in Costa Rica. Mile even went of her way to prepare a tres leches birthday cake for me! Communication was a challenge for us. We did not have a working cell phone while in Costa Rica and Casa has no phone or internet. They did provide a wireless fob which rode the nearby cellular tower and fortunately my wife did have a device with a USB port to connect and send/receive emails. All in all our stay was amazing. We recommend Casa Tres Monos based on value, location, and Mile's amazing food! Thank you!
Staying at Casa Tres Monos was amazing! The views are spectacular and the house had all of the amenities that we needed and more. The location was great and easily accessible (not too remote but still felt very private). The hosts Christine and Tom ensured we had everything we needed, and the housekeeping service came in as an extra bonus. The access to Crystal Ballena Resorts pool was a nice way to cool off and relax at their great facilities as well. The bath products were also a nice touch...L'Occitane! We stayed there 9 days and had a wonderful experience!

Talk about camping in style! This cabin was a great little home away from home (in paradise!). Unfortunately we saw no monkeys or sloths on the grounds, but enjoyed the songs of a family of green parrots, and a couple of toucans. We loved the birds but if you're planning on sleeping late, this may not be the house for you. The apartment was spotless, exactly as described. The kitchen is a bit cramped, so if you're planning on cooking epic meals here, it might be kind of tough. The drive up the mountain is pretty cool, even with the crappy 4x4 rental we had. It is beautifully landscaped and the view is outstanding! Rick & Rob made the whole process completely seamless along with the help of their management team - excellent communication and everyone was SO friendly! The Jaguar Management website's list of things to do in the area should read as a checklist of what you MUST do! All their recommendations were on point and all the sights and activities were safe, locals were friendly and we had a blast! Thanks again guys!!!
We had a great experience at casa tres monos! The Housekeeper Mile is amazing and had a wonderful dinner waiting for us when we arrived. The hosts where very helpful in giving us information about the area and directing us. Had a great time and can't wait to go back!
Getting to Casa Tres Monos was a wild journey just because we got there so late and didn't have cell phone reception. Luckily we were equipped with wonderfully detailed directions and finally met up with the property manager, Christine, who was very kind and happy to show us around. Casa Tres Monos was a dreamy respite, complete with fresh exotic flowers in all the vases and some ripe fruit, which we couldn't help but enjoy. We had both amazing evenings and mornings waking up to an amazing view and the haunting sounds of howling monkeys. Three nights were not enough-- but we'll definitely be back for longer next time!
My husband and I spent 5 nights at Casa Tres Monos, and loved it!! We enjoyed being in the mountains where the breeze was wonderful. The house offers great views of the ocean, and is a short 10 minute drive to Uvita and all of the surrounding beaches. We enjoyed watching the howler monkeys, toucans and parrots from the deck. We did miss having a pool, but went to Crystal Ballena a couple of times ordered drinks and enjoyed their pool. The house itself is new and comfortable, and loaded with windows so that you can enjoy the amazing views. I think we've already decided that we will stay here again the next time we're in Costa Rica!
