Outstanding hospitality

Nick's builder mastery is seen in every detail of his warm home. Near Mt Snow, Stratton and Brattleboro, one of the "best small art towns in America." Our house is a beautiful retreat. Enjoy our deck, cozy TV den, great kitchen and loved space!

The space
This property was the original barn for the saloon horses in the early 1900's. Later it became the barbershop. We purchased it two years ago from our neighbor, and created a true gem of home with incredible craftsmanship and detail, marrying the original timbers and frame with a lofty great room addition filled with light and warmth.

Every part of this house has been hand crafted by Hand of Man Artisan Builder, Nick Marchese, including the doors, cherry spiral staircase, pencil post master bed and master bath soapstone sink. Concrete radiant floor heat the home as well as passive solar. Walls are lushly painted with plaster-like clay paint in sumptuous colors. The owners' art tile embellishes the master bath double-headed shower.

Cherry kitchen cabinets from Thich Nhat Hanh’s Dharma Meditation Center in Hartland, Vermont, soapstone counters, extra capacity refrigerator and double drawer dishwasher, create a wonderful kitchen in the open concept great room. Huge triangle windows flood light into this room. The mahogany deck with large grill is nestled in the backyard trees for a private tree house feeling.

Two bedrooms in the original part of the house have their own full bathroom with skylight and curved glass door shower. The cozy entertainment den has a 40" flat screen with full surround sound system, couch surround and dark clay painted walls for the ultimate in movie watching.

Located in a small village setting. Many lovely walks close by down country lanes to our local gorgeous granite rock falls, and the nearby West River with a famous covered bridge.

Surrounding towns include historic Newfane (3 miles north), Dover and West Dover which are lovely towns to peruse at the base of the ski mountains, Putney, filled with craftsman, apple orchards and a quaint downtown, and of course Brattleboro, Vermont, listed in Smithsonian Magazine as one of the top eleven best places to live and visit in the country.

Brattleboro is full of opportunities for leisure and entertainment. Stroll the downtown, sample our local brewery by the water, the famous Fireworks wood fired pizza restaurant, large new Food Coop, Grafton Cheese company store tasting room, Vermont Country Deli, Sam's outdoor Outfitters. Shop some of our unique carpet, jewelry, art galleries, wine stores, boutiques and bead stores, local bakery and acclaimed unique thrift stores. Catch a show at the Vermont Jazz Center, New England Youth Theatre, New England Center for Circus Arts, or a movie at the historic Latchis Theatre.

A full list of shows, events and calendar listings will be ready for your arrival, and can be requested beforehand for planning.

Come during one of our town events: The Brattleboro Literary Festival, Strolling of the Heifers, Marlboro Music Festival, Women's Film Festival, Yellow Barn Music Festival, Putney Craft Tour, Rock River Open Studio Tour, Cotton Mill Open Studio and Holiday Sale, Cherry Hill Artists Tour, the Annual Ski Jump competition.

This is a great area for fishing, kayaking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing, or walking down country lanes. So much to do any season!

Where you’ll be

Dummerston, Vermont, United States

Great little quiet Vermont hamlet with a post office next door, a little public library and a convenience store/gas station just down the hill for basic amenities. Since our little town is a close knit community, please respect our neighbors by parking fully off the pavement, especially in winter, and treating this lovely neighborhood as if it was your own.
