The Space

We are an international family (German/American) and have a cute pup. We are a professional couple and our daughters are working on their education. Our home is in the old railroad district and closed to public transportation (train station, busses). We have many restaurants and entertainment nearby.
Downtown is a mere 7 blocks away. This location works well for visitors who enjoy walking or biking.
The city of San Luis Obispo is now asking for hosts to collect a 10% transient occupancy tax that is part of our rate.
We have another room available that can be booked in conjunction with this room. Please see "Walk to DT, house in RR district"

  • I was in SLO towards the end of June to meet two friends from decades past, and also as a tourist. I enjoyed staying four nights with Marianne and Jim in their clean and conveniently located home. During my stay I walked and bicycled to the downtown area that was only 0.5 miles away, drove to tour Cal Poly and other outlying areas of SLO, and also drove to Pismo Beach.

Bicyclists be advised starting at the end of their block there is a direct and nearly level (no shifts required) bike route to downtown. There are numerous bicycle shops within walking distance; some rent bikes also. The core downtown restaurant and shopping area is nearly level but there are nearby hills large and small to be found in several directions for those who want to create a workout ride.

I arrived by automobile and found street parking to be easy and safe on their quiet street both on weekdays as well as over the weekend. My quiet room had a very comfortable bed and the pillows, sheets and covers provided made for restful sleep. I'm hypersensitive to some molds and pollens but did not have allergy issues during my visit. Solid WiFi. Marianne and Jim were excellent hosts and we had some good conversations on matters large and small. I have only good memories of my stay with them, highly recommend.

  • It was great staying with Marianne and Jim! The room and house is nicer than the picture looks, and they were excellent hosts. Would definitely recommend them for a visit to SLO.

  • Comfortable room in a bright old house with lots of character. Very pleasant, friendly hosts, and an adorable (if slightly hyperactive) dog. Would stay again.

  • Marianne and her husband were wonderful hosts! The house was charming, clean, quiet, and in a great location close to downtown. They also have a really friendly dog, which was a plus in my opinion. =) I would definitely recommend staying with them.

  • We had a great time in San Luis Obispo especially because Marianne and Jim welcomed us so nice and warm!
Had a great evening with them in their backyard and enjoyed a hot summer evening.
The place is very close to Downtown, very clean and the room absolutely comfortable.
We would definately go there again and we wished we could have stayed longer.
    Home away from home!!!

  • Marianne and Jim were absolutely delightful hosts (and so was Winni). Their beautiful California bungalow was perfect for our stay. I wish we could've stayed longer. Hope to come and stay again.

  • Marianne and Jim are fantastic hosts. Great conversations, comfortable bed, great neighborhood about 10 minutes from restaurants, bars, and Thursday evening farmers market. I was able to really relax and rejuvenate in their home.

  • We had such a wonderful experience with Marianne and Jim.

Our stay was last minute and and for only one night...they graciously accommodated us, we were so grateful.

Their home is absolutely lovely and just down the street from town. They were both extremely helpful and ready to suggest places to go based on what we like that night, as well as for the rest of our trip up highway 1. They have lived there a long time and know the area and the coast, that was great!

I would highly suggest staying with them to anyone, it felt like staying with family, in fact we left 2 hours later than planned because we were having such a great time getting to know them. Our only regret was that we didn't have more time to do so.

We hope we get a chance to stay with them again!

  • Staying with the Culvers was a very social experience - we'd talk in the evenings and mornings, and I got to spend time with their little dog, Winni. They also had a student staying with them, so it was a fun, active atmosphere. A great home base while I explored my old college town after 10 years.

The house is old so it does have a bit of character. The window needed some help with jammed-in paper to stop rattling in the breeze, it was a little drafty and cold, and walking around on the hardwood floor caused things to rattle a bit.

Still, a great experience! Very quiet, great location close to downtown and the local natural foods coop.
