Tree houses have something to say. They speak in an ancient language, and the message is universal: climb up and be in harmony with Nature.
Let go of earthbound encumbrances and be free. You may not be young enough any more to climb a tree, branch by perilous branch, but so what?
The important thing is being in the tree not how you get up in it. (Peter Nelson and Garry Hadden).
A unique experience, living in a giant coniferous tree, nestled in its branches, with nature all around you. Fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle and wake up in luxury. Topo's Tree House has 2 decks, with an extra 3rd little deck to enjoy your morning coffee or an evening cocktail while looking out into the jungle's tree tops and flora. You might even share this moment with a passing sloth!
The 1st floor has a beautiful tropical wood deck, with carved posts and one side which is completely a wall of the giant tree's roots, creating a mosaic of shapes, twists and turns. There is a fully equipped kitchen, dining room, bathroom and terrace over-looking the tropical pond with its orchids and lilies. Relax in the hammock while watching parrots, hummingbirds and toucans as they fly by.
On the 2nd deck, there is a another living room on the open air terraced with a spectacular view looking over the canopy of trees and plants. The 2 bedrooms are adjacent to the living room, each with its own window opening out into the tree's branches. The main bedroom has a 4 poster-bed with a full Queen orthopaedic mattress, lots of pillows (email hidden) draping over it, lamps and a security safe box. The other bedroom has 2 twin beds with mosquito nets and lamps. A large bathroom with 2 sinks, a full shower with glass doors, elegant tiles and beautiful hardwood cabinets.
The 3rd deck has its private little terrace with iron wrought chairs and table , feel completely enveloped in the trees living branches with hanging orchids.
On the 1st floor, an outside shower is found in between the trees roots.
Comforts are found everywhere, from the hot running water, fully equipped kitchen, wireless Internet, flat screen Satellite TV, outdoor BBQ, to a big fridge.
The large tropical gardens have been landscaped for years but retain their natural attraction. They have been nourished to be the home for different species of birds, poison dart frogs (harmless to humans by the way!), inviting sloths monkeys and butterflies. The tropical gardens are a home to much of the local wildlife. Little ponds for fish and turtles, bromeliads for frogs and flowers for butterflies. Stroll through this magical garden, truly a little Garden of Eden.
At only 100 mt. down the little sand road lies the beach of Playa Negra. A well known beach for surfers. The coconut trees, the beach, the surfers, swimmers and the famous 'Reggae Bar' make it a great place to relax and enjoy life. Sit on the open air terrace of 'Reggae Bar' over-looking the beach, feel the breeze as it moves through the palm leaves, enjoy a Pina Colada and the local dish of Coconut Chicken with Rice & Beans or a fresh Redsnapper grilled on the BBQ. Friday nights are 'Live Music' dance and move to the vibes of Reggae, Calypso and Blues. For the younger generation hit the town! The streets are full of locals and tourists dancing and having fun to the music of Reggae Dancehall.

WOW. WOW. WOW. My husband and I just returned from a week long stay at Topo's Treehouse in Cahuita, Costa Rica. It was paradise. The treehouse was recently completed and looks absolutely brand new. It is unbelievably clean for an open air house nestled in the jungle, and aside from the occasional lizard, beetle, and mosquito- there were no "creepy crawlies." The two bedrooms are completely sealed so there are literally no bugs in there. (You can tell the bug issue was a major concern for me- haha) The wooden details are stunning. Two awesome hammocks make for wonderful afternoon naps. Bathroom is large with two sinks, glass shower, HOT WATER and plenty of fresh fluffy towels. There is even an open air half-bath downstairs. COOL!
My husband and I rented a car and drove to Cahuita from the San Jose Airport. About 3.5 hours. If you are doing this, try to avoid driving at night and you MUST rent a GPS, or you WILL be LOST.
Upon our arrival, Topo met us at a local Bar/Restaurant within walking distance of the treehouse. He was extremely welcoming and had stocked the fridge for us with juice, beer, fruit and water. There was also tea, sugar and other basic necessities. Kitchen has a nice, large fridge, plenty of dishes, pots, pans, etc.
The treehouse is within walking distance of 20+ local restaurants, bars, shops, and THE BEACH. You can literally hear the roar of the ocean alongside the jungle noises at night! AMAZING.
We had a couple days with rain, and the treehouse was dry and cozy- only the sounds of the rain on the roof.
Topo checked in on us daily to make sure we doing well and to see if we needed recommendations for day trips. He organized a fishing trip, snorkeling outing, and a rafting trip for us per our request. All we had to do was show up & pay. He also provided a cleaning service halfway through our stay while we were out of the house.
We would strongly recommend rafting the Pacaure River with Exploradores Outdoors. (A day trip from Cahuita). They picked us up in a nice van, had wonderful guides, provided breakfast and lunch, as well as 3.5 hours of rafting and a ride home. Good Stuff.
We also enjoyed a day trip into Peurto Viejo. (25 minute drive South from Cahuita). Koki Beach Restaurant was a great place to eat, and we enjoyed a wonderful couples massage at the Jungle Spa. Excellent massage therapists and only $65 for an hour!
We were certainly sad to leave the treehouse. We could not have been move pleased with the trip. Topo was an awesome host.
Perfect destination for folks looking to blend luxury with adventure. Excellent place for a honeymoon, or anniversary celebration. Would even work well for families, girls trips, bachelor parties, etc.
The Jungle Tree House in Cahuita is an amazing place and vacation opportunity. It's expensive relative to other lodging in the area, but it is a totally different experience. The Tree House is situated by itself in a totally private jungle garden. The owner's house is down a little path behind thick vegetation, so you can get any help you need easily with directions, etc but otherwise you'll never be bothered. The hosts were very respectful of privacy and never came by unexpectedly.
The treehouse is a 2 story house built literally into the side of a giant tree.
The ground floor has a kitchen, bar and dining area, with a half bath and access to the garden. The kitchen is efficient and well designed. It is stocked with all the plates, cooking equipment and utensils needed to cook a full meal. The fridge is full sized and the owner stocked it with fruit, juice and beer before we arrived. He also drove us over to the local supermarket when we arrived so we could buy supplies and gave us a short tour of the town which was very helpful for orientation (which are the nicest restaurants, what to avoid, where is it safest to swim in the water, things to see, local history, etc).
The second story has two bedrooms, a large living room and a well maintained full bath with two sinks and fully enclosed shower room. Hot water was very hot and the cold water was actually cold, which is amazing in the tropics. The water supply is from the owner's own well, which he told us is sunk into coral bedrock and has been tasted and is safe. It tasted great and we had no problems at all with it.
The gardens themselves were spectacular as only tropical gardens can be - lush, verdant and beautiful. The owners put a lot of effort into keeping the gardens tidy too, and the result is beauty without all the mosquitoes that you normally find in the jungle. While we were there we saw a family of Agoutis living in the yard, which was amazing, and monkeys pass through periodically.
Remember that you're in a tropical jungle area, which is rich in plant and animal life. There are going to be ants in the tree sometimes, but we never had a problem with them leaving the tree (they mind their own business), and of course we were happy to see gecko lizards who eat little bugs. But if you want four walls with square corners and A/C, the treehouse isn't for you - in fact Cahuita isn't for you -- try a chain hotel in Waikiki maybe.
For location, the treehouse is only 100 meters to a beautiful beach with 2 restaurants nearby. Short walk to other restaurants, 15 min walk to Cahuita national park.
For anyone interested in a little luxury and a little adventure, the treehouse is perfect. It's comfortable, private and beautiful. Highly recommended.
