The Space

Our urban modern craftsman home was built in 2007. It is remodeled from a 700 sq. foot cottage and was built by us! It has an open and spacious feeling and yet is cozy and warm with repurposed lumber and modern amenities. There is a hot tub along with a beautiful deck for relaxing in the summer. There are two large tvs and wireless. There is a dance/workout room and an office. Two bedrooms, one with a king, one with a queen. Both have bathrooms, one with a walkin shower, one with a clawfoot tub. There is room for air mattresses for several more guests. The house is fully furnished. There is also a cottage in the back of the property that will sleep 2, and is also available to rent. (Please see Urban Whiteaker Cottage) This is not a party house. We have neighbors next door and they all like to sleep at night. That being said, a good time can still be had before 11pm!
It's situated in the heart of Whiteaker, Eugene's oldest neighborhood. Esquire magazine calls it "one of the weirdest neighborhoods in America". It's a mix of bohemian vibe, urban funk and hippy love. Within a 5 minute walk, you'll find Ninkasi (local beer brewery), Territorial (a local winery), Vanilla Jill's (a local organic frozen yogurt co.), Sam Bond's garage (a bar/venue for amazing shows), PRI (the most unusual pizza you'll ever try), Meiji (japanese pub), Mame sushi (a new hole in the wall that serves world class sushi), a host of traditional mexican and thai restaurants, and of course, my bakery, Sweet Life ((website hidden)).
The river is a short jaunt, as well as most places in Eugene as it is centrally located. On street parking and bus stops right out front.
Keep in mind, this house is located in the center of a busy neighborhood. You'll often hear music from the local venues at night and an occasional rowdy bunch in the park next door. The energy of the neighborhood is festive and unique.
Locally roasted organic coffee and assorted teas provided.
We're busy on our farm and at the bakery, so you probably won't see too much of us, but we'll greet you and make sure you're settled in.

  • We had such a wonderful time in Catherine and Scott's home. The house is exquisite down to every detail. So comfortable and convenient to all the best places in Eugene. The home is very well stocked with everything you could need and a perfect place to host a multi-generational family vacation. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. Everything was perfect!

  • The Urban Whiteaker House is not just the nicest AirBnB lodging I have every stayed in, but may well be the nicest house I have ever visited. It is abundantly clear that the utmost attention was paid to every detail of this place, and we were wowed over and over again throughout our weekend stay. The amount of different spaces for lounging were a major highpoint: huge back patio with hot tub, living room with chaise lounges, upstairs living room w/ wet bar, two (!) upper porches, master bedroom separated from living space via long hallway....

With such a nice place to stay, it was even a difficult decision to "waste" our steps venturing down the block to all the conveniently located restaurants and bars!

A great stay, and some perfect late May weather. We will return!

  • The house is gorgeous! Not one corner has ben left untouched. Catherine's design style is impressive and tasteful. We were very comfortable in her home. How could one not be? It had everything we needed and then some. Catherine was a very gracious host—very friendly, helpful and generous. We hope to come back and visit sometime soon.

  • Second time staying here. I have nothing but amazing things to say. This beautiful home has both a modern and natural feeling to it. They are gracious hosts who are available to call if you have any questions at all. Love this place.

  • The Urban Whiteaker House is definitely where you should be staying if you are visiting Eugene. The house itself is immaculate condition and you can tell a lot of thought went into it. The neighborhood is also a great place to be with many places within walking distance. All in all a 5 star stay!

  • Five stars is not quite enough, even without Catherine's spectacular hospitality. Right from the start, she was flexible and accommodating in helping us arrange this stay. While we were there, she continued to help accommodate our needs and also kept us plied with incredible pastries from her bakery.
The house itself was similarly spectacular. It was a very comfortable space for six of us and the living space allowed us to entertain daughters, nieces, and a nephew. The kitchen was so well equipped that it allowed us to cook large dinners with ease and the dining room seated everyone comfortably.
The feeling of the house was just so pleasant!
Perhaps the only downside, one that we were aware of in advance, is that the sleeping spaces have somewhat marginal privacy, especially if you have more than four people. That wasn't a huge issue for our group, but it is something to consider when you think about renting this house.
Having a hot tub available was a huge plus for all of us and quite unusual to find in Eugene.
Aside from that, this is just a spectacular house, in a convenient and vibrant location, with hosts who are beyond beyond. I'd feel that I'd compromised to stay anywhere else in Eugene.

  • Surprise! This house is a museum piece. Every corner exudes an extreme level of relaxation. Strictly from an architectural perspective I have never experienced a more interesting and well-planned domicile. We loved the consistent attention to local and reclaimed resources. But don't think the house is just all look and no touch. If you love to travel and have a living, working environment like your OWN home this is the perfect place. Scott and Catherine were always available for a quick answer to questions: where to eat, where to drink, where's the pans, details on hot tub, laundry. You get the picture. They are proud owners but, thankfully, not helicopter parents. They allowed us to take over which in turn compelled us to treat the home like our own. Oh, that comment again. That's just how we felt.
As you can see we were emotional about our stay. Our trip included local very fine dining at GRIT, Ninkasi and Papas Soul Food in the Whitaker neighborhood. The Sweet Life Patisserie is down the street and owned/run by these same homeowners. Fantastic pastries, cakes, desserts and even Gluten Free selection for me!! Are you kidding? We blasted up to Willamette Valley wineries for a day. Our team didn't fair too well against the powerful Oregon Ducks but that was really less important compared to the overall comfortable experience of the stay in this home.
Treat yourself and leave your worries at home. We are already planning our trip for next year. We won't have a football game bringing us to Eugene. We wanna stay in the house again.

  • Great hosts, great house. Catherine and Scott were incredibly helpful with restaurant recommendations and information prior to our arrival. When we got to the house, Catherine showed us around and made us feel at home. The house was beautiful and we enjoyed our stay very much. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

About
I own a patisserie in Eugene, Oregon with my sister. My husband Scott and I built our dream home 3 years ago. Now we're embarking on a new adventure of starting an organic farm so we can grow berries and flowers for our bakery. We rarely stop to breathe, but when we do we enjoy cooking and eating good food, hanging with our niece and nephews, dinners with friends, and making beautiful things grow.
