Updates-new grout, paint, lighting, etc.-completed 2/14!!! (reviews since renovation begin with "Geoffrey")
This fully furnished apartment includes a very comfortable queen bed with a new serta mattress (as well as an inflatable mattress and bedding for a second guest), kitchen area with all the basics, living space, wi-fi, etc.
The space is on top of the hill a few blocks from main street of Isabel II and is only a few blocks to bars, restaurants, grocery, the ferry dock, town square, etc. Views of the last Spanish colonial fort in the "new" world from the bedroom area.
This apartment is definitely a great chance to experience local life in Vieques as well as having the convenience of having everything you need within walking distance: get fantastic Puerto Rican coffee at Roy's or La Panaderia in the mornings, stroll through the possibly the most beautiful cemetary in the world on the way to a drink and views at Al's Mar Azul in the afternoon, and walk down to holiday festivities in the town plaza at night. The benefits of the in-town locale does come with the added noise of daily life: the trucks coming off the cargo ferry in the morning, roosters crowing (although that's pretty much everywhere on the island), and the occasional kid playing reggaeton driving down main street on a weekend night.
If I'm not staying on the property during your stay, the property manager lives nearby if a problem should arise. Also, having lived (and worked) on the island for several Winters, I am happy to provide advice regarding any and all aspects of the island.
2 guest maximum (exceptions often made for toddlers/infants) and two night minimum. Also, check-in/check-out is generally flexible, but when guests depart and others arrive on the same day, may require 11:00 check-out/1:00 check-in, depending on guest schedules. Guests are always able to stash their gear in the extra apartment, use that bathroom etc., if they arrive early or are departing on a late flight or ferry.
Guests have access to anything/everything in the apt.
I will be on the property through the season (at least through April) and am happy to interact as much or as little as guests would like. I feel like I'm fairly good at reading people and tend to err on the side of privacy vs. being overbearing. But again, I'm just as happy to socialize and share what I know about the island.
I love staying in town (which is why I bought a place here). I love waking up in the morning and being able to walk down to the Panaderia for coffee and breakfast. I love being able to walk down to the Colmado for $1 beer in the evening and being able to drink it on the walk back. I love being a few blocks from all basic goods/services in case I've forgotten something or simply want to get out of the apartment. Basically, I love the convenience and also like being part of a community, talking to locals, etc.
Publicos (taxi vans) are very easy to catch (except for approx. 15-45 mins after a ferry arrives) a stones throw from the apt on main street and most will take you to Playa Caracas (Red Beach) for ~$5/person and to the Sun Bay gate for $3-$4/person.
Mason was a great host. He was very easy to communicate with and went out of his way to help us when we arrived. The place is located about 10 min from the ferry and was easy to find. He has a couple of apts but we stayed in the back one which we found very comfortable. He had plenty of sheets and towels and had some extra stuff in the room like after sun skin care products and speakers to plug in your music device of choice. It was easy to catch rides on the publicos towards Esperanza or whatever your desired location is. The Main Street in Isabel was just minutes away from the apt and was very convenient. I would definitely stay again.
Our stay at Mason's was an experience to remember. The location on the hill allows for a breathtaking view of the town and ocean. The area is very nice and we felt very safe. It's easy, walking distance to anything you may need (laundry, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, etc). The apartment was lovely and clean and was thoughtfully stocked with snorkeling gear, aloe, many fresh towels, brochures and maps, Trivial Pursuit, a fridge filled with delicious ground Puerto Rican coffee, bottled water, beer, and snacks, etc. The fan provided cool, comfortable sleep and the bed was very cozy. Mason was very accommodating to our needs and took good care to provide a beautiful experience. Thank you so much and we hope to stay with you again in the future!
Our stay in Vieques was awesome. Mason was a great host and I highly recommend staying in any of his apartments.
We were fortunate to be in Vieques while Mason was in town and were glad to bump into him during the mornings on our way out to explore the islands. He was exceptionally responsive when we had questions while we were out and about.
Unfortunately, we only stayed for one night. We have much more to explore and are already looking forward to when we can come back to Vieques to stay at Mason's and discover the rest of the island.
Mason's place has everything you need for a comfy stay- nothing fancy, but just right. The neighborhood is great because you can walk everywhere and hang out with locals. It's an easy $10 cab ride to the southside beaches. Mason was a gracious host - he provided a mini-guide to the island that was quite helpful and was very responsive to our needs.
This was our first experience being guests as opposed to hosts and it was wonderful ! Mason was available at the drop of a hat and we instantly felt at ease with him and with the space. It was exactly as described and as frequent visitors to the island it was a nice change to stay in town and walk to restaurant options instead of driving. We needed additional pillows etc for my very pregnant wife and Mason got right on it and delivered them to our door within the hour! Mason filled the fridge with food and beverages of our choice ( he requested a list before our arrival) which was a very nice touch !
The space is simple and clean with all the beach gear provided . We would highly recommend this rental and this host to anyone visiting the island looking for a local non fussy experience.
Exactly as promised. The directions were spot-on (including the fault in (website hidden) maps!), the neighbours were friendly, and the recommendations of where to eat in town were useful. As mentioned, the local roosters ensure an early morning wake up call. Location was within walking distance to the ferry, and the apartment had everything we needed - although note there is no microwave or oven if you are planning a longer stay. Communication with Mason was good and timely, which we especially appreciated given our late booking.
We chose this place because it offered more potential than a dingy motel room at less cost. Totally satisfied.
The apartment is clean and gets plenty of air and light. The space is just right for a couple. Ideal if you plan to cook (which we did).
No real downsides. You might find something cheaper if you arrive in Vieques and search it out. The apartment is in Isabel, which is not directly on the beach, which was fine with us... we were able to hitchhike, walk/run to the beaches easily. If you don't want to be near people or you need to be right on the water, consider staying in Esperanza or camping at Sun Bay.
Mason was helpful, quick to respond to email, text, and call. Totally easy to work with.
Great little apartment in Isabel II. It was easy to find and Mason was super easy to get a hold of and provided us with lots of great information regarding getting to Vieques. It is basic (no a.c.) but it was great to have a working kitchen.
Thanks for everything, Mason! The place is basic but perfectly servicable, and nicely located in Isabel II close to the ferry, and I was able to rent a bike from a shop in town to explore the rest of the island. Also thanks for the clear communication. A good deal all around.
Mason was an excellent host!! We communicated over email to get everything ready and everything went absolutely perfectly. Mason was great about getting everything ready and communicated in a very timely, polite, and efficient manner. The house is totally cute and cozy and close to everything in Isabella II. The bed is super comfy and the neighbors all extremely friendly. I would highly recommend staying here and would love to stay again next time! Thanks so much Mason!!
