Im Mai 1909, vor genau 100 Jahren, wurde in der Stuttgarter Kernstadt nach dreijähriger Sanierung das Quartier um den Hans-im-Glück-Brunnen eingeweiht. Vorausgegangen waren umfangreiche Umbaumaßnahmen, in deren Verlauf Dutzende von Häusern abgebrochen und durch neue ersetzt worden waren.
Nachdem sich die ältesten Teile der Stuttgarter Altstadt im Verlauf des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einem vernachlässigten Viertel mit unhygienischen Wohnungen, wenig Licht- und Luftzufuhr sowie hoher Brand- und Seuchengefahr entelt hatten, entstand auf Initiative des Bankiers und Sozialreformers Eduard Pfeiffer eine "neue" Altstadt an Geiß-, Stein- und Eberhardstraße. Pfeiffer verfolgte das Ziel, Wohnen und Einkaufen, Handel und Verkehr in der Kernstadt wieder attraktiv zu machen.
Durch die neuen Gebäude war ein heimeliges Ambiente an kurvigen Straßen mit hohen Giebeln und Arkaden, Brunnen, Erkern und Figurenschmuck entstanden. Die mehr als 30, sehr abwechslungsreich gestalteten Bauwerke zeigten unterschiedliche Dachformen und Fassadendetails und waren mit Märchenmotiven, Tierfiguren und Fassadenmalereien geschmückt. Kein Haus glich dem anderen, und dennoch fügten sie sie sich miteinander zu einem harmonischen Bild. Trotz vieler Veränderungen hat sich der Reiz des Quartiers bis heute erhalten.
Der Platz am Hans-im-Glück-Brunnen ist in dieser Form vor 100 Jahren entstanden. Wie kam es eigentlich dazu, dass der Platz noch heute wie eine mittelalterliche Puppenstube anmutet? Märchenfiguren zieren Giebel, Dächer und den Brunnen in der Mitte des Platzes. Die Häuser stehen bescheiden nebeneinander, keines ragt heraus, keines zerstört die Harmonie des Viertels. Als das Innenstadtquartier seinerzeit von Grund auf saniert wurde, inszenierten die Stadtplaner eine heile Welt des Bürgertums.

Der Platz hat seinen eigen Sound: Sein Klang ist aus Gläserklirren, Gelächter, Musik und dem Geklacker der über den Asphalt krachenden Absätze zusammengewoben.
Sechs Bronzemedaillons zeigen dort Szenen aus dem Grimm'chen Märchen vom Hans, der sein Glück erst fand, als er all sein Hab und Gut los war.
Ausgerechnet auf dem Platz des glücklichen Habenichtses ist Stuttgart reich an Charme und Schönheit.Die Brunnenfigur verkörpert einen derben Bauernburschen von den Fildern in einer kurzen, mit Silberknöpfen besetzen Jacke, dem der Künstler im Schlachthausgegeet war. Zu Füßen des Jungen tummeln sich ein Schwein und sechs kleine Enten, die als Wasserspeier dienen. Auf dem Rand der Brunnenschale erhebt sich eine gitterartige schmiedeeiserne Einfassung mit sechs Bronzemedaillons, die das gleichnamige Märchen in Bildern erzählen. Darüber befindet sich ein kunstvoll gewölbter schmiedeeiserner Baldachin, aus dessen Spitze ein vierblättriges Kleeblatt emporragt.
Am 12. May 1909 wurde der Hans-im-Glück-Brunnen als krönender Abschluss der damaligen Altstadtsanierung eingeweiht.
Der Stadtbezirk Stuttgart-Mitte liegt auf dem Grund des Stuttgarter Talkessels, dessen Rand durch die angrenzenden Bezirke in Hanglage gebildet wird.

Weiter in Richtung Süden folgt der Marktplatz mit dem Rathaus, der Tagblatt-Turm und, durch die Hauptstätter Straße räumlich getrennt, die Leonhardskirche sowie das Bohnen- und das Heusteigviertel.
Östlich des Schloßplatzes, im Bereich der Konrad-Adenauer-Straße und des Oberen Schlossgartens, befinden sich der Landtag und das Staatstheater sowie auf der anderen Seite der Straße die Staatsgalerie, die Württembergische Landesbibliothek und das Wilhelmspalais. Die Konrad-Adenauer-Straße (B 14) trägt zwei recht unterschiedliche “Labels”: einerseits Kulturmeile, andererseits Stadtautobahn.
Am westlichen Rand der Innenstadt liegen das Hospitalviertel mit der nur teilweise wiederaufgebauten Hospitalkirche (in der „Neuen Vorstadt“) und eine Reihe kultureller Einrichtungen. Zu nennen sind die Liederhalle und das Linden-Museum, dazwischen der historische Hoppenlaufriedhof, dann das Katharinenhospital und das Bankenviertel mit dem Friedrichsbau und der Börse. Südlich des Katharinenhospitals an der Kriegsbergstraße gibt es einen Grünbereich, den „Stadtgarten“, dort an der Schellingstraße und Keplerstraße liegen Teile der Universität, der vormaligen Technischen Hochschule, besonders drei Hochhäuser und die Universitätsbibliothek. Zwei der Hochhäuser sind die Kollegiengebäude nahe dem Hauptbahnhof, das dritte ist das Max-Kade-Wohnheim an der Liederhalle. Die nördliche Grenze des Bezirks bildet das Europaviertel, dessen Fläche bis in die 1980er Jahre ein Güterbahnhof einnahm. Im Frühjahr 2002 wurde damit begonnen, das Gelände neu zu bebauen. Im Europaviertel findet man den neuen Standort der Stadtbücherei, die zuvor im Wilhelmspalais beheimatet war, wo ein Stadtmuseum eingerichtet werden soll.

Im Mai 1909, vor genau 100 Jahren, wurde in der Stuttgarter Kernstadt nach dreijähriger Sanierung das Quartier um den Hans-im-Glück-Brunnen eingeweiht. Vorausgegangen waren umfangreiche Umbaumaßnahmen, in deren Verlauf Dutzende von Häusern abgebrochen und durch neue ersetzt worden waren.
Nachdem sich die ältesten Teile der Stuttgarter Altstadt im Verlauf des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einem vernachlässigten Viertel mit unhygienischen Wohnungen, wenig Licht- und Luftzufuhr sowie hoher Brand- und Seuchengefahr entelt hatten, entstand auf Initiative des Bankiers und Sozialreformers Eduard Pfeiffer eine "neue" Altstadt an Geiß-, Stein- und Eberhardstraße. Pfeiffer verfolgte das Ziel, Wohnen und Einkaufen, Handel und Verkehr in der Kernstadt wieder attraktiv zu machen.
Durch die neuen Gebäude war ein heimeliges Ambiente an kurvigen Straßen mit hohen Giebeln und Arkaden, Brunnen, Erkern und Figurenschmuck entstanden. Die mehr als 30, sehr abwechslungsreich gestalteten Bauwerke zeigten unterschiedliche Dachformen und Fassadendetails und waren mit Märchenmotiven, Tierfiguren und Fassadenmalereien geschmückt. Kein Haus glich dem anderen, und dennoch fügten sie sie sich miteinander zu einem harmonischen Bild. Trotz vieler Veränderungen hat sich der Reiz des Quartiers bis heute erhalten.
Der Platz am Hans-im-Glück-Brunnen ist in dieser Form vor 100 Jahren entstanden. Wie kam es eigentlich dazu, dass der Platz noch heute wie eine mittelalterliche Puppenstube anmutet? Märchenfiguren zieren Giebel, Dächer und den Brunnen in der Mitte des Platzes. Die Häuser stehen bescheiden nebeneinander, keines ragt heraus, keines zerstört die Harmonie des Viertels. Als das Innenstadtquartier seinerzeit von Grund auf saniert wurde, inszenierten die Stadtplaner eine heile Welt des Bürgertums.

Der Platz hat seinen eigen Sound: Sein Klang ist aus Gläserklirren, Gelächter, Musik und dem Geklacker der über den Asphalt krachenden Absätze zusammengewoben.
Sechs Bronzemedaillons zeigen dort Szenen aus dem Grimm'chen Märchen vom Hans, der sein Glück erst fand, als er all sein Hab und Gut los war.
Ausgerechnet auf dem Platz des glücklichen Habenichtses ist Stuttgart reich an Charme und Schönheit.Die Brunnenfigur verkörpert einen derben Bauernburschen von den Fildern in einer kurzen, mit Silberknöpfen besetzen Jacke, dem der Künstler im Schlachthausgegeet war. Zu Füßen des Jungen tummeln sich ein Schwein und sechs kleine Enten, die als Wasserspeier dienen. Auf dem Rand der Brunnenschale erhebt sich eine gitterartige schmiedeeiserne Einfassung mit sechs Bronzemedaillons, die das gleichnamige Märchen in Bildern erzählen. Darüber befindet sich ein kunstvoll gewölbter schmiedeeiserner Baldachin, aus dessen Spitze ein vierblättriges Kleeblatt emporragt.
Am 12. May 1909 wurde der Hans-im-Glück-Brunnen als krönender Abschluss der damaligen Altstadtsanierung eingeweiht.

Am westlichen Rand der Innenstadt liegen das Hospitalviertel mit der nur teilweise wiederaufgebauten Hospitalkirche (in der „Neuen Vorstadt“) und eine Reihe kultureller Einrichtungen. Zu nennen sind die Liederhalle und das Linden-Museum, dazwischen der historische Hoppenlaufriedhof, dann das Katharinenhospital und das Bankenviertel mit dem Friedrichsbau und der Börse. Südlich des Katharinenhospitals an der Kriegsbergstraße gibt es einen Grünbereich, den „Stadtgarten“, dort an der Schellingstraße und Keplerstraße liegen Teile der Universität, der vormaligen Technischen Hochschule, besonders drei Hochhäuser und die Universitätsbibliothek. Zwei der Hochhäuser sind die Kollegiengebäude nahe dem Hauptbahnhof, das dritte ist das Max-Kade-Wohnheim an der Liederhalle. Die nördliche Grenze des Bezirks bildet das Europaviertel, dessen Fläche bis in die 1980er Jahre ein Güterbahnhof einnahm. Im Frühjahr 2002 wurde damit begonnen, das Gelände neu zu bebauen. Im Europaviertel findet man den neuen Standort der Stadtbücherei, die zuvor im Wilhelmspalais beheimatet war, wo ein Stadtmuseum eingerichtet werden soll.
