We have run a BNB for the past 8 years in our home and have had great feedback and return visitors.
We have TWO lovely rooms in the main house available and ONE self contained, independent cottage so please also check out our other listings.
This listing is for ROOM 1 (The Garden room) which sleeps 2 and has a spacious queen bed in a bright garden room to patio overlooking a rural view at the sunny east end of the and refreshment facilities included.
We also have ROOM 2 (The Red room) (see: https://www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/1836471?s=6NkS) which sleeps 2 and the COTTAGE (https://www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/5117149) which is fully self-contained and sleeps 3 - 4).
There is one large sunny toilet/shower room for the guests. We offer the toilet /shower exclusively as we only rent out one room at a time (unless a group or family books both rooms then you share the toilet/shower between rooms 1 and 2)
We have an eco water system that does not tolerate chemicals very well, so we supply shampoo, conditioner and soap and ask that all guests refrain from using phosphates and SLS ingredients. Eco products are requested to be used whilst you stay here please. In summer as we are on tank water shower times have to be kept shorter (Dec- Mar)...if you are happy to adapt to these requests feel welcome to stay and enjoy our eco home.
You also can enjoy your own guest lounge area and the communal dining table, the patio and garden during your stay.
IMPORTANT please see caution about river and access below.
We love interacting with our guests and assisting you with local attractions and getting the most from your stay.
John and I can choose to relax in our separate 'apartment' at the west end of the home (to give you privacy you have your own guest lounge area). Please note that during the day the main area is utilised by ourselves too and we cook in our main kitchen. We enjoy mingling with our guests and are flexible and will fit in with your being around to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
Enjoy a yummy, sophisticated continental breakfast which includes cereals, toast and a selection of usual teas, herbals and fresh plunged coffee and is included in your room charge or for $8 extra a full breakfast.
We eat mostly home grown vegetables and organic, free-range meat and fish. We can cater for: vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free, high-carb, low-sodium, low-sugar, low-dairy diets.
During the day we have two cafes open in Whatawhata and full breakfast is served at the Lizzard and you can eat lunch at the pub and get great cakes at the Cafe too.
There are a number of takeaways 10mins from here offering: Pizza, Indian (excellent), Thai, Chinese and Fish-n-Chips. We can order and collect these for you if you wish in exchange for a contribution towards fuel costs.
Our home is fully wheelchair accessible.
Our home is definitely somewhere you can retreat to; in a perfect setting with a wonderful outlook over the garden to fields.
We live 10 minutes drive into Hamilton and there is a (limited service) bus between Hamilton and Raglan that stops at the end of our road.
The garden is beautiful and has flat areas to sit, walk, play in. However we must say that it is not fenced, there are beehives in a corner of the property, near the cottage and and there is a steep drop off to a fast-flowing river below so it is the individual's and parents responsibility at all times to ensure the safety of yourself and any children.
Please ask if you have any questions,
Pip and John your hosts
You have your own front door and key, your room, use of your own guest lounge area and communal dining table, the patio and garden.
Interaction with Guests
We love interacting with our guests and assisting you with local attractions and getting the most from their stay.
Raglan beach and township hosts one of the world's few left-hand-break surf beaches, has black sand and is a great place to chill out.
The Bridal Veil Falls are on the way to Raglan and we have an Arboretum up the road.
Hamilton is a great city with all sorts of shops and entertaining areas and now the biggest shopping mall in NZ - if that's your sort of thing.
Hamilton is a fab place to dine and catch up with friends, boasting over 70 restaurants.
Lastly, our cats will assume they can sleep on your bed if the door is left open, and our dog will happily allow you to tickle her tummy for as long as you like. Are you ok with animals? This is a consideration.
We would highly recommend a car as we are 25 minutes walk to two cafes in Whatawhata and basic food stuffs sold at the petrol station shop, 10 minutes drive from the nearest shopping center at Dinsdale and are rural. There is a bus 15 minutes walk from here - 3 buses a day each way between Raglan and Hamilton that stop here.
Other Things to Note
We get bookings so people can enjoy the Hamilton Gardens Arts festival, also we get bookings for sports events like the Rugby and cricket and big agricultural events like Field days too. Everything is accessible.
Happy people are welcome to apply, who love bees and are environmentally savvy.
We live on an eco-friendly rural property so there are certain rules to be mindful of:
•Property is not fenced
•Property backs onto a fast flowing river, native plants line the bank but it is a steep drop to a fast flowing river
•Enter the trail down to the river is at your own risk
•Parents/caregivers are responsible for children at all times
•Individuals are responsible for themselves at all times
•No disturbing or approaching the beehives which are in a cornered off area of the garden, beside the cottage
•You are provided with ECO bathroom products (Eco shampoo, conditioner and soap) or please check with us before using your own bathroom products for suitability - as the property has a special septic system that cannot take chemicals
•Washing machine available in the main house for a small fee
•Mindful use of water is required as water that is used is purified rain water and all waste water is recycled
•No smoking is permitted in the cottage or on the deck but you may smoke in the garden.
•Alcohol is permitted but would ask you to respect the space, also that music be kept to a moderate level. We ask for respect for all our guests comfort. Thank you.
We had a lovely time at Somewhere over the Rainbow. We were welcomed when we arrived and were delighted with our room and the beautiful view. It overlooks farmland and at the bottom of the garden is the Waikato River.
We felt welcome to use the shared living and dining areas and the two cats and elderly dog were friendly as well.
The whole house and garden have art works and sculptures - some whimsical and some beautiful. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay again when next in the area. The cooked breakfast at $8 extra was fantastic value also. Also close to the Bridal Veil Waterfalls and Raglan.
Had a really enjoyable time at John and pips place, its was tuck in a nice corner overlooking the hills and river without being too far away from hamilton town. the room and toilet was really clean and you could hang around the living area to read a book, do nothing or just walking around the garden feels good. Highly recommend this place to whoever is visiting hamilton. The bank on victoria street(hamilton) serves pretty good and affordable steak and queen vic fish and chips in cambridge is highly recommended
Very clean and tidy accomodation - the room and the house is as described and we had a nice stay in Whatawhata.
The house is ecofriendly and requires ecological awareness from its residents (for example: only ecological shampoo/ body wash, which is provided by the hosts, a mindful use of water, etc.)
Pip and John are very spiritual hosts, who were friendly and helpful.
Thank you Fritz, we loved having you to stay and hearing your stories each day of your surfing events. We found you very amiable and spotlessly clean and tidy to the point that we didn't really know you were here sometimes!
We welcome any guests that are even half as great as you!
We wish you well on your travels around the world.
John and Pip gave me a very warm welcome and lots of help and advice about the local area. The house is smart and modern and eco friendly with lots open countryside around. It's perfectly located between Hamilton and Raglan so that I could make the best of both. It was a great stay.
Great location between Hamilton and Raglan. As the pictures suggest, the house is a homely experience
Tranquil, lovely home, placed well for adventures in Hamilton or Raglan. Great bed.
John and Pip were very accommodating and informative. Very nice breakfasts prepared. Plan on eating out for for dinner or bringing take out food home as use of the cooking facilities by guests is discouraged. Overall a very nice stay.
It is a wonderful place. The house is new and very comfortable. The hosts are very kind and friendly. It was a unforgetable stay in their home. We can recommend staying their. When we should came back we are sure to stay their again.

About the Host, John
My wife and I came to New Zealand from England in 2005 and we love it here. We run a holistic health business from our home and I "keep my hand in" in IT by developing websites for small businesses, groups and associations. I am going to be building a passenger-carrying miniature railway around our garden for children of all ages (i.e. adults too) to enjoy.
