About this listing
If you want a truly Tuscan village experience then Il Fienile is exactly what you are looking for. A beautiful restored barn with pool and a stunning view in the green hills of the famed Garfagnana.
You want the VERY BEST OF TUSCANY?? WELL THIS IS IT!! Guest have returned 5, 6 and 7 times from Australia because being here is the best holiday they have ever had. That's as good a recommendation as you will get.
Holidaying in Il Fienile is a 5 Star Experience in a beautiful untouched part of Tuscany where you will have a village experience rather than a tourist experience.
The studio in the old barn is at one end of the largest villa in the village, which is available for rental for a bigger group. Originally a barn for hay and farm equipment with the stables for animals below, today it is a beautifully converted open plan contemporary space like a New York loft, with the living area and bathroom at ground level and the sleeping accommodation on a partial mezzanine.
The property is set on an acre of ground in a small village in the hills of Northern Tuscany where you can live the life of the villagers, eat locally grown food, drink local vino, explore village markets and sit on the large terrace with a gin and tonic at the end of the day looking at the 10th century ruined fortress on the next hill.
A stunning 12 meter pool was built in 2014. The property is 725 square meters including a vegetable garden and orchard adjacent to the barn. The altitude of around 800 meters makes it a perfect place to avoid overcrowded and unpleasantly hot holiday resorts in summer.
Guests have returned from Australia up to 7 times; many have returned 3 and 4 times because this is such a unique and authentic Italian village experience.
At ground level there is the kitchen with a 250 kilo piece of Carrara marble from the hills nearby as the kitchen bench, dishwasher, and crockery, cutlery and implements to cater for 6-8 people. The sitting room has two very comfortable sofas , flat screen television, stereo and DVD player and a selection of CD's and DVDs. The dining table has 6 chairs.
The bathroom has a walk-in wet area shower, toilet and bidet and a vanity unit and a washing machine, laundry sink, ironing board and iron. There is a clothes line outside. Some emergency toiletries are provided and a hair dryer.
Upstairs there is a king bed and 2 single beds, wardrobe, desk and a blanket box. There is a large furnished terrace for outdoor living. There is a washing line...dryers are not available in Italy, strangely enough but the summer sun will dry your things very quickly.
This is a place to be if you would like to explore local markets, eat and drink wonderful food and wine at very reasonable prices, visit hilltop towns, explore the marble mountains of Carrara, the elegant Italian Riviera or the Cinque Terre, and the wonderful elegant city of Lucca 60 kms down the valley.
This is not a tourist area and the locals, even though few speak anything other than Italian, are delightfully friendly and helpful. You won't see ancient masterpieces in these hills but you can experience the best of Italian village life. You will need your own transport to avail yourselves of the best of the area.
Weekly markets, a cheese factory to visit in the next village, ancient hill top towns abounding in festivals, outstanding food, inexpensive restaurants, wonderful food shops, bars, and clothing shops are part of your experience in these wonderful hills.
A local cook can enhance your experience of this special area of Tuscany. Mary, an English friend with a vast knowledge of the area and food can cook up a storm for you one night at a very reasonable cost, and help you find your way around village activities: festivals, cheese, wine etc.
There is one shop in the village, a large town 3 kilometers away and market towns all around the valley. You can purchase vegetables from the farmer next door for a very small amount of money or take things from the vegetable garden and orchard if you are there at the right time. There are apple, pear, plum, cherry and fig trees and all summer vegetables growing in the veggie garden.
If you require a larger place to accommodate your guests, please consider 'Large Tuscan Villa I Cinghiali' as alternative accommodation.
Access is through Pisa airport which is a 1.5 hour drive away, or train from Lucca at the southern end of the valley and Aulla at the northern end, both around 1 hour drive. Trains arrive at Piazza al Serchio 3 kilometers away.
The roof is very high making the space unheatable so it is only available in the northern summer, between around early May and late October. Please email the owner for availability.
The barn is around 100 square meters. The property is 725 square meters.
