The Space

In the heart of the historic centre of Palermo, moored by the old port of the Cala, the sailboat Zephyr offers a very original solution for those who want to discover from close the amazing, though controversial, old city centre.

The old harbour has been recently renewed, allowing the locals and the tourists to enjoy a very unique walk along the moorings and the renovated gardens, just a few steps away from the main cultural attractions in town, monuments, gardens, theatres, bars and restaurants.

The sailing boat is very cozy, both inside and outside. The bow cabin sleeps comfortably 2 people, while there are at least 2 more single beds (berths) for 2 adults and a 2 persons sofa-bed (dinette). Considering the standard spaces on a sailing boat, the toilet is quite comfy (electric waste pump, no manual!) and the kitchen just like home, with all necessary amenities.

The breakfast is self catering with fresh products provided at arrival by the owner (coffee, thee, milk, yogurt, cornflakes, season fruit). If you have special needs regarding food, it can be arranged with the owner. A stay on a sailing boat is surely very original and charming. However it is not really advisable for small children or for people having mobility issues. In fact the access aboard requires a bit of agility and it is not advisable to bring along too much (and not too large) baggage.

For the sailing lovers, when the weather conditions would allow it, it is possible to hire a skipper on request for a unique day sailing on the beautiful sea around the city. This can be agreed at reception. The price depends on the length of the trip, how many guests on board and kind of services (for instance including lunch).

  • We spent two great days on the boat, slept very well and enjoyed the sun on deck. Don't miss this experience when you're in Palermo! By the way, Mario was very nice and gave us a great introduction to life on a boat.

  • Staying in a sailboat was a first for us, and a real adventure! We loved sitting out in the evenings, and found the experience of sleeping on a boat soothing. The boat was extremely well-stocked with fruits, bread, cookies, preserves, and supplies to cook and comes with a living room/dining table, a heater and easy-to-use kitchenette and beds - everything was very comfortable and clean. For those like us who haven't lived on a boat before its also best to have a realistic picture in your head about staying indoors in one - everything in a boat is obviously compact and built with sailing in mind, and you will also have to climb in and out and heavy luggage can be a bit of a pain to lug in. Thankfully for us, Mario met us when we arrived and helped with that. It was great meeting him, and he was genuinely helpful and friendly, always reachable and offers great travel advice and local perspective on Sicily. We hope to meet him again, and would definitely recommend the experience of staying here! A lovely boat and in our opinion, a very comfortable and unique stay! Plus it's docked walking distance from a lot of things in old-town Palermo, and there's a bus stop right outside.

  • I spent three days in late November on Mario's Zephyr with my boyfriend and it was a great experience. It was my first time sleeping on a sailboat but Mario's guidance and preparation made the stay enjoyable and fun even for a "beginner" like me.

Palermo is a beautiful and charming city and staying in Baia Cala on a sailboat was the best choice to tour the city day and night because of its central position - all while staying in a quiet relaxing place.

The sailboat is equipped with everything you need, we did not miss being in a real house at all! The only thing is if you are over 1.85 m you should mind your head :-)

Thank you Mario, this was my first time in Palermo but will not certainly be the last - see you soon!

  • Mario's boat is all in wood, very charming. It is located in Palermo's marina, at walking distance to the city center... And thanks to the water, it is fresher than anywhere else in Palermo. Mario was a perfect host: he was not available to be our skipper for one day but find a friend of him who was as nice as him! We spent four nights on the boat and we loved each instant of it. If you book the Zephyr, you'll spend a wonderful time in Sicily!!!

  • Mario is a responsive, engaging and cordial person taking exceptionally good care of his customers up to and including wining and dining them during a sailing trip with Zephyr. He never tired to answer question regarding accomodation, rental cars, special places to visit, an excursion to Etna ... the only complaint we have is that we only had one, much too short week to stay on Sicily! Especially as we would have loved to sail for a longer period on his boat with character. Its unique location provided us with a perfect base in the middle of the city, but with the luxury of having lots of privacy, open airspace, a view and a sense of remoteness.

Hope to see you again real soon ,

  • Mario is a Fantastic Host & made sure everything from arrival to departure was fully catered for including meeting us for a drink to share his vast knowledge of Sicily (He arranges Eco Tours) & sorting out our taxi on departure. Zephyr is a sweet boat & waking up on the Marina is a treat, smack bang in the middle of beautiful Palermo. Sadly time did not allow for a sail but I would definately recommend doing so as part of your stay.

  • Such a lovely experience! And the dock is a in great location, with friendly "neighbours". The sailboat was clean and comfortable and Mario sent Romina to introduce us to everything we needed to know. Very easy even for our first experience on a sailboat :)
It was slightly challenging to locate the boat though, as the name doesn't show enough to easily spot it amongst all the rest but we found it after some help from others in the dock.
