About this listing
Our house is an all Redwood cabin set in the Redwoods of Ben Lomond. The property is on the San Lorenzo River with a nice view of the water. The cabin is fully functional and clean with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a nice kitchen. There is a wood stove to heat the cabin and a couple of floor heaters to help out when its really cold. Lots of firewood available on the property. One of the bedrooms is a dorm of sorts that is great for your kids to bring along their friends. The place will sleep 4-10 depending on your family/friend configuration. The inside is all redwood -- walls, floors and the ceiling. The house is also surrounded by redwood decking, providing lots of space both inside and outside the home. There is even a horseshoe pit outside.
The location is near both Felton and Ben Lomond. Its about 15 minutes from downtown Santa Cruz and the beach. Its a great hangout for a golf weekend with your buddies as there are local courses like the Alistir MacKenzie designed Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz as well as Monterey is only an hour away. There is hiking at the nearby Henry Cowell State Park in Felton, less than 3 miles away. There is also a steam train at the Roaring Camp Railroad park next to the Henry Cowell State Park.
One caution: please be careful when exiting the property and re-entering HWY 9. It is difficult to turn left onto the highway because of visibility. Please consider turning right and then turning around at the store just a short ways down the road.
There is no TV at the cabin, but there is free WiFi. No smoking please. In addition, this is a quiet neighborhood and we respect our neighbors who live nearby. Please do not book our cabin as a drinking party house. Try to bring the noise inside the house at 10 pm please. Thank you.
Its a quiet neighborhood so we hope you will be reasonably quiet while you're there. Its very private as the house is on the end of Cottage avenue. Sheets and towels are available. There is a list on the bulletin board of other house rules. No dogs please as there are some already in the neighborhood. There is another 1400 square feet of decking all around the house. Great in the summer time for family gatherings.
This cabin is perfect for a family with children. We stayed for 4 nights with 5 kids and 3 adults, we had dinner at the house with 7 kids and 4 adults. The cabin is a little rustic but its amazing. Its a quick drive to the boardwalk and the beach. The cabin is very well stocked with everything you need. They leave you a nice selection of breakfast foods and good coffee. The best part is its so relaxing there. Im still in mourning over leaving! I can't wait to go back. Thank you Bill!
*tip. Check out the trout farm inn if you have kids. Its a restaurant & bar with a swimming pool. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon.
I would probably rename the headline " Cabin in Beautiful Redwoods".
It is a spacious cabin with lots of beds and vedrooms. I would say it is too well stocked with the owner's tchatchkes and mementos all over, grandma's afghans, cushions, mugs, souvenirs, the children's trophies, photographs..the beds are comfortable, plenty of towels. I thought it was very nice that there was bacon, eggs, milk, oj and Starbucks coffee for us for breakfast. Helpful host ( via email).
Bill had excellent communication before, during and after our stay. His home was clean, comfortable and well stocked. Instructions provided before and during the stay re: parking, driving and even traffic cautions were not only helpful, but thoughtful.
We had a wonderful experience spending the weekend at this cute and comfortable cabin in Ben Lomond. The communal areas are spacious and perfect for playing board games around the fire and the kitchen had everything we needed to make a large family style meal. I was surprised by how well the cabin holds it heat at night (the space heaters provided went unused). The overall feel is very special and secluded. We had plans to spend much of our time in town but ended up just enjoying the cabin for most of our weekend!
All the five star reviews here are spot on. Bill was an exceptional host. The cabin was stocked above and beyond my expectations with breakfast goodies, towels, bedding, firewood, and anything you could possibly need in the way of kitchen tools.
I stayed at this cabin with 8 friends to celebrate my upcoming wedding with a relaxing weekend in the redwoods. There were plenty of spots for everyone to sleep. The girls shared the three large beds and the guys stayed in one room that had four twin beds and a futon. The dining table happened to have 9 chairs set up and it was a great size for that many people. 10 would work just as well. It was a perfect getaway for me with my best friends.
When I opened the door to the cabin, I was immediately overcome by how wonderful it felt to be inside such a clearly loved house. The girls and I just wandered excitedly through the cabin for a while taking it all in. This cabin is a quintessential cabin. What a treat!! And in a beautiful, safe, quiet, peaceful neighborhood.
We had a great time at Bill's property! With this cabin, Bill has invited the guest into his multi-generational extended family. The cabin is filled with the accumulation of years of family vacation memories: family reunion photos, golf memorabilia, heavily loved board games, knick-knacks, salt and pepper shaker collection, books, toys, etc. Bill has entrusted you with all of these artifacts and instantly you're part of the family. By the end of your trip you might find yourself saying, "Honey, I think we should get a cabin." But even if you can't swing your own, you can get all the best parts by visiting here.
My best friend's family and my own stayed at the cabin for the weekend. We enjoyed a visit with the elephant seals at Ano Nuevo State Reserve and other excursions in and around Santa Cruz. But it was the phenomenally relaxing time we spent in the cabin that really defined this vacation. Our children got to adventure through the cabin without the distraction of television. The four of them enjoyed sharing a room with 4 single beds and a fold out. The adults enjoyed relaxing downstairs by the wood burning stove and out on the deck with a beautiful view of river. The time in the cabin was nothing but comfort and relaxation.
There's no doubt about it, this place is mostly cabin. If you're looking for an updated anything then look elsewhere. If you want to sink into a cozy chair and have a chat by the fire then this is the place for you. Most of the interior is wood. Most of the cabin is old. Pragmatism comes first in every repair or addition (with 'character' in a very close 2nd). There's no central heat and air; though, I doubt AC is necessary here (we were here in winter). A wood stove is the primary source of heat (with plenty of space heaters to accompany it). Everything functions well, is sufficient and is well loved.
Bill was a great host. He was very attentive beginning with the reservation and continuing through the end of our stay. We didn't need anything from him during our time there but he communicated just enough to know he was immediately. This was via non-intrusive emails/texts. He prepped the cabin completely before our arrival and even warmed it with a fire before we arrived. He provided us with some nice breakfast items in the fridge and plenty of good coffee.
I look forward to staying here again.
We had a wonderful time at this rustic cabin. "Perfect" for a special holiday rendezvous of family, and source for many lasting memories.
Bill was readily available by phone and text message for the few details that were not covered by the written instructions. It was fun to enjoy the relics of many years of family treasures that gave a warm ambiance. A wry sense of humor was evident everywhere. The facilities and furnishings were very nice for a cabin.
The wood stove provided good heat despite some chilly, wet days, but does require periodic attention. There was plentiful wood for fuel. (With the wettest December in decades there was some mud, but no threat from the San Lorenzo River far below the level of the deck.)
The kitchen had enough appliances, utensils, and place settings for a crowd. The coffee maker had the most use! Two charcoal Weber's provided a barbecue alternative. A large dining table and a kitchen table provided many places to sit for meals.
The slope of the roof made for interesting access to some of the beds on the second floor. All part of the rustic homeyness of the place.
The primary access street to the cabin turns back sharply from the busy state highway just at the end of a bridge, and the smaller lanes beyond were marked, but not clearly. GPS guidance got us to the right place at the end of the lane. Local access to stores and laundromat provided all the resources we needed.
About the Host, Bill
Married 35 years with two grown kids who are both married. We have one grandson! I love to play golf at the nearby Pasatiempo Golf course or go down to the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk.
