  • Very large and nice house. Plenty of space and a big garden. It's a bit far from the main road if you don't have a car, but the place is really peaceful and quiet. 20-25 min walk to the main square (centro) alongside a well-maintained main road.
Veronica was very helpful and, although she was not there, made sure we were welcomed and had all we needed.

  • This experience was not at all what we expected.
The sheets on one of the beds had long black hairs on them,
the front of the house had two approximately 12X16 foot tarps covering the front porch and therefore no light came in, there
was no soap for hand washing, no water for drinking etc.
I could go on, but I think you get the drift. However, most upsetting was when I sent a respectful note to the owner I was told “I know the standards of cleanliness for the house and feel your comments to be out of order.” I guess I can say that my standards are different than this owners. We left after the first night having paid for two nights.

  • Casa Santiaga is a lovely home situated 5-10 minutes out of Tequis and we enjoyed it thoroughly. In the mornings, we walked up to the main road where taxis and taxibuses into town came by frequently. Take the taxibus - it's only six pesos! Returning "home", we either reversed the process or, depending on how sore our feet were, we splurged on a taxi to our gate - only 25 pesos.
The house itself is wonderful - obviously built with love and skill - lots of stone and terra cotta block work. Fabulous ceilings! The master bedroom is huge with king sized bed, a bathroom with a sunken tub, and double doors leading to a small patio - perfect for reading, breakfast coffee, or watching the sunset. The second bedroom is smaller but more than adequate - it has a very comfortable twin bed, a closet for hanging clothes (no need to live out of your suitcase), its own bathroom with shower and an impressive collection of books devoted to Mexican history - all in Spanish.
The kitchen is fully equipped, including a gas range, which we loved.
Large, open living room and dining room offer lots of choices of comfortable seats for reading. The owner has a wonderful collection of art, seemingly collected from around the world. Beautiful, wide double doors, with wood framed bevelled glass windows, lead to a patio; perfect for lingering over breakfast and coffee or for relaxing with a late afternoon margarita.
The owner employs a delightful maintenance manager, who waters and tends the new plantings and generally looks after the house; he checked on us every evening to make sure we were alright and not needing anything, I should explain that we are two older women, in our early 70's and I think he worried about us, traipsing around the country!.
We took day trips, via autobus - to Bernal and to Pueblo Trinidad (le mina de opalos - the town of the opal mines - I especially love the brown opals). We intended to go to Queretero but, the house was so comfortable that we spent our last few days in Mexico just hanging out and enjoying the peace at Casa Santiago.
