Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to Casa Zen. May 2014 be a wonderful, peaceful and prosperous year for us all!
Casa Zen, our freshly painted beauty of an 1899 historic home, features 3 units. You'll be in the apartment on the main floor, a gem of a clean and beautiful spot. We share an entrance and foyer, and the apartment is entirely yours. You'll enjoy a 1-bedroom with a Queen sized bed, small walk-in closet and adjacent new bathroom, a full (and fully-appointed) kitchen, your own laundry + additional closet/storage area, plus an airy living room (which includes a queen-sized pull-out sofa-bed) and eating nook. 4 people can comfortably stay here, though note that the bathroom is off the only bedroom. Our home features a gorgeous wrap-around front deck and Japanese maple, with a sweet outside eating spot.
Casa Zen is located in inner SE Portland, and is very accessible to multiple key locations and routes. We are 3 blocks from the Ross Island Bridge which gives you immediate access to downtown attractions, shopping and business via car or multiple bus lines. We are close to the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge and the Springwater Corridor Trail that takes you along the Willamette River north to South, via foot or bike. Not far are OMSI - the Science Museum, OHSU - the educational hospital over the river and up the hill, the sweet Sellwood Neighborhood, as well as a handful of cafes, restaurants, and boutiques, including The hip Ford Building (where you can do yoga, get a haircut, buy a dress, and get a latte while listening to great local music!) We are just up the hill from the Aladdin Theatre for you live music lovers. Additionally, New Seasons Market, the People's Food Co-op, and the Warehouse Cafe and Market are in the neighborhood and offer the full range of healthful groceries.
Guests have full access to the whole apartment, as well as the front porch. We have a hot tub in back that is for us alone. Sorry!
I keep my interactions with our guests to a gentle minimum lest I seem over-eager and in the way. However, I give a nice intro and walk-through and make myself entirely available by text, call, or even a knock on our living room door. So far, this technique seems to work! I'm happy to be more present for folks too, for anyone who wants to map the city a bit more and learn the attractions.
The neighborhood is lovely, the neighbors friendly, our home cozy for the season. See you here!
Public transit options are copious and regular. There are about 6 bus lines to choose from just 2 blocks away. Street parking is included with our listing. Getting to us from the airport could include the MAX line and then a bus, or MAX plus cab, or cab all the way.
Please arrive by 10pm. If you cannot, please be in touch via text with your estimated ETA. We'll do our best to meet you at the door. Thank you!

Our stay at Casa Zen was so amazing. Robyn was very lovely and incredibly accommodating. We arrived very late the first night which was not a problem at all. The location is very central and made it very easy for us to enjoy everything Portland had to offer.
On our last morning, Robyn brought in her beautiful children and they were just a pleasure.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay there the next time I visit this lovely city!
This is the place to stay if you are looking in this area. The place is clean, lovely and very comfortable. Robyn is so hospitable but not intrusive. We loved being next door to a family with little kids but didn't hear a peep from them once we were inside. There's a good market/cafe within easy walking distance if you want to stock up and cook, or get breakfast out. Couldn't ask for more.
We decided on a spontaneous road trip, but unfortunately we didn't quite make it to Casa Zen - a freakish snowstorm and highway shut down turned us back an only an hour away from Portland.
Robyn was great to speak with though, and was very helpful as we had to turn around and head back. We look forward to visiting Casa Zen, and Portland in warmer times!
This apartment is truly a sanctuary. It is just as spacious as it looks. The kitchen is fantastic and I appreciated that it is stocked with the basics needed for cooking - cookware, dinnerware, wine glasses and even a full supply of herbs and spices. The bedroom is quiet, comfortable and the bathroom is great whether for a shower or bath. Zen Apartment was clean, neat and it couldn't have been more comfortable. The hosts are great - full of information and yet they give all the space needed for a quiet stay. I will definitely be back!
This place was peaceful and in a fun little neighborhood in Portland. Robyn was very accessible and welcoming. I would definitely recommend staying here. It's a great spot, especially if you have a bike rental. There's also plenty of on-street parking if you rent a car.
The Zen apartment is all as described. The living room is well furnished, and the kitchen has all the conveniences (except microwave -- After all, this is Portland and most Porlanders don't believe in microwaves!). With a comfortable queen bed, washer and dryer, and spotless bathroom, what more could a person want?
Robyn has created a list and map of eateries within walking distance or a short drive or bike ride away. She is also a great resource if you have questions.
The refrigerator was generously filled with food to make a wonderful breakfast (or in my case, 3 breakfasts and a dinner).
I will definitely stay here when next I am in Portland.
Robyn, Jazen and family were fantastic hosts! The apartment is beautiful and spotlessly clean. The kitchen is extremely well equipped. Robyn was very welcoming. The neighbourhood is lovely and within easy walking distance of parks, grocery stores and cafes/restaurants. It's also very easy to get to downtown etc on foot or using the bus. We absolutely loved our visit here and would not hesitate to stay again!
The apartment was beautiful and spacious and well-stocked which was much appreciated. I stayed for a full month and it was the perfect place for a long term stay with plentiful parking, good internet access, comfortable bed, and full kitchen and bathroom. It was nice to have Robyn and family directly next door in case I needed something. She was polite and friendly but not intrusive. There are pets next door but I never heard them when I was actually in the apartment. You could hear their (cute!) children sometimes but never during sleeping hours. The only drawback was the train that goes through SE Portland throughout the night but it quickly became background noise.
It was also thoughtful to have a guide to several nearby spots in Portland left in the living room upon arrival. Lastly, I felt very safe in the neighborhood which was a huge plus since I had to walk to the bus stop in the dark to get to the hospital a couple of times. Would definitely stay again.
We had a great time at Robyn's pad. My daughter, partner and I were visiting from BC and wanted to check out Portland. The location of the apartment was perfect. We parked our car and rode bikes for the three days we were there. The "casa" is clean and very comfortable with handy amenities like a Bose ipod doc and a tucked-away TV. Perfect for a small family. Robyn was very helpful with directions and was easy to reach. She also didn't dote or hover--key for any good host. The place felt like our home, which made our whole visit to Portland a very positive experience. Thanks very much to Robyn and family.
There were a couple of local microbrews and Stumptown coffee waiting for us in the fridge upon arrival. That was an auspicious start for our nine-night stay in late July. The apartment was comfortable, neat, and clean. Nice decor, furniture, linens, etc and a comfortable bed. It has a nice kitchen and bath. And, as my wife said, "it had everything we needed."
There is a Bose iPod dock which we used often and a TV with Netflix (I think) which we never used because we were watching our ten-month-old or reading...
The apartment is a separate unit in the family's home which is a large, old, nicely restored Craftsman style home. Most of the views from the apartment windows are green trees and bushes. There are colorful gardens in the yard around the home that we did pinch a few herbs from when cooking.
Robyn and Jazen were friendly and accommodating. It felt like having helpful neighbors. Their two kids are sweet and dog Rainey secures the premises.
There are two good coffee places, a serious cider pub, a few bars, a rock club Alladin, and a couple of restaurants a 5-10 minute walk from the house. There is also a neighborhood park just a few minutes away. A longer walk can get you over to Clinton and Division Streets where there is a New Seasons grocery and numerous restaurants, etc. Compote and Vindhaloo are especially good.
We had a car and found driving from the apartment to anywhere in Portland pretty easy using Powell or 99E/Grand or Milwaukie.
In the words of my septuagenarian dad..."sweet pad, man."
