The Space

Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to Casa Zen. May 2014 be a wonderful, peaceful and prosperous year for us all!

Casa Zen, our freshly painted beauty of an 1899 historic home, features 3 units. You'll be in the apartment on the main floor, a gem of a clean and beautiful spot. We share an entrance and foyer, and the apartment is entirely yours. You'll enjoy a 1-bedroom with a Queen sized bed, small walk-in closet and adjacent new bathroom, a full (and fully-appointed) kitchen, your own laundry + additional closet/storage area, plus an airy living room (which includes a queen-sized pull-out sofa-bed) and eating nook. 4 people can comfortably stay here, though note that the bathroom is off the only bedroom. Our home features a gorgeous wrap-around front deck and Japanese maple, with a sweet outside eating spot.

Casa Zen is located in inner SE Portland, and is very accessible to multiple key locations and routes. We are 3 blocks from the Ross Island Bridge which gives you immediate access to downtown attractions, shopping and business via car or multiple bus lines. We are close to the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge and the Springwater Corridor Trail that takes you along the Willamette River north to South, via foot or bike. Not far are OMSI - the Science Museum, OHSU - the educational hospital over the river and up the hill, the sweet Sellwood Neighborhood, as well as a handful of cafes, restaurants, and boutiques, including The hip Ford Building (where you can do yoga, get a haircut, buy a dress, and get a latte while listening to great local music!) We are just up the hill from the Aladdin Theatre for you live music lovers. Additionally, New Seasons Market, the People's Food Co-op, and the Warehouse Cafe and Market are in the neighborhood and offer the full range of healthful groceries.

Guest Access

Guests have full access to the whole apartment, as well as the front porch. We have a hot tub in back that is for us alone. Sorry!

Interaction with Guests

I keep my interactions with our guests to a gentle minimum lest I seem over-eager and in the way. However, I give a nice intro and walk-through and make myself entirely available by text, call, or even a knock on our living room door. So far, this technique seems to work! I'm happy to be more present for folks too, for anyone who wants to map the city a bit more and learn the attractions.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is lovely, the neighbors friendly, our home cozy for the season. See you here!

Getting around

Public transit options are copious and regular. There are about 6 bus lines to choose from just 2 blocks away. Street parking is included with our listing. Getting to us from the airport could include the MAX line and then a bus, or MAX plus cab, or cab all the way.

Other Things to Note

Please arrive by 10pm. If you cannot, please be in touch via text with your estimated ETA. We'll do our best to meet you at the door. Thank you!

Overall Guest Satisfaction

  • Robyn is a gracious and helpful host, who welcomed us to Portland for our three day vacation. Although we spent most of the time outside the little apartment, it was so perfectly welcoming to return to that it improved our overall trip. We woke up and felt like we were at home. The photos here do not do it justice. The apartment is beautifully organized, situated in an accessible neighborhood.

For couples traveling together, it's enough space that you can get settled and do your own thing without being in each other's way. The kitchen is well-appointed with anything you could want for cooking, and a few basics (spices, etc) so although there are plenty of wonderful places to eat within walking distance, you could stock the apartment from any number of groceries and co-ops nearby. Robyn brought us coffee and some lovely goodies to get started!

It's clear so much thought and care went into this space; it's about a thousand times better than anywhere we've stayed.

  • The apartment itself is absolutely lovely, I would happily live there!! It has its own entrance and consists of a really good size living room, kitchen and bedroom, with a walkin closet and gorgeous bathroom. The decorations are thoughtful and beautiful, and feels like a home rather than just somewhere to stay. Robyn and Jay are absolutely lovely, very welcoming and warm. They spent ages helping us think about the perfect music venue for us to visit, which was really kind. They also have 3 very cute kids and a dog, but dont worry, you cant hear them when you are in the apartment. The whole house itself is beautiful, with a wonderful wraparound patio that you can use in nice weather. The location of the apartment is great, its on a really quiet treelined residential street, but close enough to cafes, supermarkets and restaurants. I would highly recommend staying here if you visit Portland.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Zen apartment and enjoyed every minute of Portland! Robyn was truly wonderful and welcoming; it was such a treat to be living next to her family. We have two young children (3 and 1) and they both had a terrific time! Robyn and her loved ones were very helpful but also discreet. The apartment is very clean, well organized for a family of four, and the patio is relaxing. The kids especially enjoyed the gorgeous and spacious bathroom, and we were very grateful that Robyn left some delicious breakfast items for us. We will definitely come back, and we highly recommend the Zen apartment!

  • Lots of extras like bagels, fruit and half and half in the fridge. All natural products and a lovely calm ambience.

  • Our stay at Casa Zen was so amazing. Robyn was very lovely and incredibly accommodating. We arrived very late the first night which was not a problem at all. The location is very central and made it very easy for us to enjoy everything Portland had to offer.
On our last morning, Robyn brought in her beautiful children and they were just a pleasure.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay there the next time I visit this lovely city!

  • This is the place to stay if you are looking in this area. The place is clean, lovely and very comfortable. Robyn is so hospitable but not intrusive. We loved being next door to a family with little kids but didn't hear a peep from them once we were inside. There's a good market/cafe within easy walking distance if you want to stock up and cook, or get breakfast out. Couldn't ask for more.

  • We decided on a spontaneous road trip, but unfortunately we didn't quite make it to Casa Zen - a freakish snowstorm and highway shut down turned us back an only an hour away from Portland.

Robyn was great to speak with though, and was very helpful as we had to turn around and head back. We look forward to visiting Casa Zen, and Portland in warmer times!

    Thanks Robyn!

  • This apartment is truly a sanctuary. It is just as spacious as it looks. The kitchen is fantastic and I appreciated that it is stocked with the basics needed for cooking - cookware, dinnerware, wine glasses and even a full supply of herbs and spices. The bedroom is quiet, comfortable and the bathroom is great whether for a shower or bath. Zen Apartment was clean, neat and it couldn't have been more comfortable. The hosts are great - full of information and yet they give all the space needed for a quiet stay. I will definitely be back!

  • This place was peaceful and in a fun little neighborhood in Portland. Robyn was very accessible and welcoming. I would definitely recommend staying here. It's a great spot, especially if you have a bike rental. There's also plenty of on-street parking if you rent a car.

  • The Zen apartment is all as described. The living room is well furnished, and the kitchen has all the conveniences (except microwave -- After all, this is Portland and most Porlanders don't believe in microwaves!). With a comfortable queen bed, washer and dryer, and spotless bathroom, what more could a person want?
Robyn has created a list and map of eateries within walking distance or a short drive or bike ride away. She is also a great resource if you have questions.
The refrigerator was generously filled with food to make a wonderful breakfast (or in my case, 3 breakfasts and a dinner).
I will definitely stay here when next I am in Portland.

Hi! We are progressives, we have 3 awesome kids, we eat organic food, love our beautiful nature-escapes here in the Pacific Northwest, and we listen to good music and dance around the livingroom. Pretty standard for Portland, OR! I'm a dancer and teacher, and full-time Mama, and my husband is a builder/contractor. Come join us at Casa Zen!
