The small village of Arties, with a population of 524 inhabitants, is situated at 1143 metres above sea level. It is located between the villages of Gessa and Garós, where the Valarties River meets the Garona River. Coming out of the village, the Valarties riverside, where the Montarto peak (2833 metres high) stands out, takes us to the river’s headwaters. At that point there is an entrance to the National Park of Aigúestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, as well as several lakes such as Mar, Tòrt de Rius, Rius, Restanca where there is a refuge and other small ones.
In the Old Town is worth visiting the church of Sta. María de Arties, a Romanesque construction from the 11th to 12th centuries which also has a bell tower from the 13th century.
To the North of the village, on the righ hand side of the Garona River, there is a Gothic style church from the 14th century. It is the church dedicated to San Juan de Arties which has an octagonal shape bell tower. Nowadays, it is a museum that holds temporary exhibitions.
On the outskirts of the village, it is possible to see the Arties abandoned spa, where there are still two fountains with sulphurous waters, one at 43 degrees centigrade and the other at 29 degrees centigrade.
In the centre of the village there is a school, a library, an old people’s club, a doctor’s surgery, a pharmacy, a bank, a tobacconist’s and a great deal of bars and restaurants with great atmosphere. Besides, Arties together with Vielha and Baqueira, is one of the places with best nightlife in the Valley. There is also a leisure and sports area and a zoological centre where a brown bear lives protected.
There are different types of accommodation in the village, modern houses and apartments specially designed for you to enjoy a truly unforgettable winter holiday. But if what you want is a skiing holiday, Arties is perfect as it is just 7 kms. away from the slopes of the ski resort of Baqueira Beret, about a 10 minute drive along the road C-28.
