BACKYARD AND PATIO AREAS:
The DBGH shares a common private back yard and back patio area with the big house, aka the Salon de Boheme. This is where Poor William and Magical Madge live. Feel free to enjoy the large brick-wall enclosed back yard and funky patio area. Poor William has created his own version of a Delta Pond and Garden. You ain't seen nothing like this, folks! At night it becomes a Delta Disneyesque environment with his multitude of outdoor lighting. It is a perfect spot to relax before you head out for the night and an even better place to congregate after a night of celebration, music and fun. The patio is a laid-back spot for relaxing and enjoying meaningful conversation or, if you prefer, just listening to the birds sing and the pond fountains splashing.
Many guest enjoy sitting in the front yard of the DBGH and watching the local foot traffic and neighborhood scene. To the right of the front door is an area for just that. Sit outside, enjoy your morning cup of coffee at the table and chairs and watch life in Clarksdale pass by. Our neighbors on all sides are good folk and come from all socio-economic backgrounds. We love where we live.
During inclement weather, the storage shed which is adjacent to the back patio is open for your enjoyment. That way you can be outside but be out of the weather. In the winter an electric heater will keep you toasty. Just don't leave it on when you leave! THIS IS REQUIRED! In the summer, well, we can't air condition the outside so prepare to sweat, or as Delta ladies are known to say, prepare to glisten.
Disturbance to the neighbors, including excessive noise, is prohibited and may result in termination of rental. Guests must not create noise which is offensive to neighbors, especially between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. and during arrival and departure at any time throughout the occupancy. DBGH is in a residential neighborhood; please be considerate of the neighbors. The owner trusts that the hirer will understand the neighborly relations he is trying to uphold, whilst the hirer is enjoying a stay at the DBGH. Thank you for respecting the neighbors and the local community.
Regarding excessive noise, guests and visitors must comply with any instructions from owners, Madge and Billy Howell.
Guests and visitors must abide by any noise abatement conditions, standards, and orders issued by police or any regulatory authority to minimize impacts upon the residential amenity of neighbors and local community.
This is the Mississippi Delta, y'all, and we do enjoy excellent conversation along with an evening or late night libation in the patio area as well as an early morning coffee. We certainly do not intend to squelch a full Delta experience so use your good judgement and have a good time! Just don't go crazy folks.

MORE ABOUT THE DELTA BOHEMIAN GUEST HOUSE
The Delta Bohemian Guest House is a historical home built in 1917 by a local planter. He built his main residence, and then constructed a guest house in his back yard. It was built for a farm employee and his wife, who served as the family’s cook. Another bit of trivia: the planter’s wife was later crowned “Miss Clarksdale.”
The DB Guest House is owned by the publisher's of the Delta Bohemian, Billy “Poor William” Howell and his wife “Magical” Madge Marley Howell. The DB Guest House shares a back yard and patio with the Howells.
“Poor William” has marked a part of the large, bricked walled back yard with his unique, true Delta style garden. You ain’t seen nothing like this folks! Lingering on the patio with libation in hand, songbirds singing, sometimes bumble bees buzzing, along with sounds of Clarksdale is an ideal way to relax and relish being a Delta Bohemian while catching your breath between adventures around town and the Mississippi Delta.
The MS Design Maven Marilyn Trainor Storey (see (website hidden)) has embellished the interior of the DB Guest House with her earthy, elegant style with some bohemian from Magical Madge thrown in. The two women completely renovated the unique home and have created a place to stay like none other in Clarksdale.
Downstairs is your open living, dining and kitchen areas complete with flat screen TV for those who just have to have it. Upstairs you will rest your weary, stimulated mind in either the large “Green Acres” bedroom and/or the small “Delta Princess” bedroom. The two rooms share a compact, luxurious bathroom complete with ceramic tile shower.
Billy and Madge were born in Clarksdale. The couple married in 2009 in a Pirate Wedding at the historical Clark House Residential Inn in Clarksdale where Billy serves as the Innkeeper. With the support of the owner of Clark House, Billy and Madge started the DELTA BOHEMIAN.
The website is a literary, erudite, provocative, providential, felicitous and bohemian website which celebrates the CONSTANCY and the DIVERSITY in the Mississippi Delta. The DB Guest House is their dream come true. The many travelers to their hometown arrive from all over the world. Billy already meets many at Clark House and Madge, while managing Morgan Freeman’s MADIDI Restaurant was hostess to many too. The couple relishes making new friends, sharing their unique community with others and learning about other fascinating places in the world. The DBGH gives us an even greater opportunity to make new friends and show them a true Delta Bohemian experience.
The DB Guest House is only 3 blocks from downtown Clarksdale.
OUR UNIQUE AREA IN CLARKSDALE
As you walk or drive along West Second Street you will notice many beautiful homes. Back in the day, this was the premium place to live in Clarksdale. In the past ten to twenty years many families have moved away or to other newer neighborhoods. If you drive around you will see pristine homes and yards and you will see impoverished homes and yards and you will see everything in-between.
We enjoy our neighborhood and are grateful we live in a neighborhood filled with diversity. We know you will love it too.
Welcome to our unique part of the world and make yourself at home in the DELTA BOHEMIAN GUEST HOUSE!
Visit the DELTA BOHEMIAN website.
Consider hiring "Poor William" to personally orient you and show you around via DELTA BOHEMIAN EXCURSIONS. Read more about this on our DB website!
Madge was a very friendly, welcoming and informative host with lots of great tips for getting the most out of our stay in Clarksdale.
The DB is a great place to stay - loved the garden ( with hammock!) and great collection of music DVDs
The Bohemian Guest House is a fantastically stylized Delta escape with very comfortable accommodations and in close proximity to numerous blues and local sites. Madge was incredibly welcoming and accommodating, going above and beyond as a host and ensuring that our visit was as enjoyable as possible.
WOW! The Clarksdale Bohemian Guest House is unreal: wonderful colors and textiles, one-of-a-kind handmade curtains, cheetah bedding, and working air conditioning. The living room features a small bowl of candy, which my daughter loved. In the morning, we ate food provided to us-- bagels, fruit, and cereal. We ate in the lush backyard garden. We felt at home. Madge was very communicative, feeding us ideas of where to explore in Clarksdale. Cute dog, too! This is the best way to see the Mississippi delta.
Madge and Billy made us feel very welcome, and provided lots of information about things to do in the area. The eats and snacks provided were delicious and especially the breakfast provisions. Unfortunately ours was a 1 night stay only and we could not fully take advantage of the music and many videos that were provided. An added touch was the use of their carport to keep our car off the street.
We had a wonderful stay at the Bohemian House. Madge was so sweet and guided us on our night out. Great Blues music. This is the true home of the Blues and we truly loved it. The home is so inviting and the bed was divine. We will definitely be back!
Madge made me feel so welcome! She is so kind and generous. The guest house is beautifully decorated, has everything you need. Very comfortable! I'll have to come back to enjoy the warmer days in the MS Delta.
About the Host, Madge Marley
I am the Publisher and Producer of the DELTA BOHEMIAN, an online magazine of sorts which is all about the Mississippi Delta. We have an online retail store, too. We opened the DELTA BOHEMIAN GUEST HOUSE in August 2012. It is a fabulous place to stay while you are in the Mississippi Delta. It is a home away from home environment. Safe. Quiet. Discrete. Unique. Fun. A self-accommodation for travelers looking for something different.
I was born in Clarksdale in 1958 but was raised in Tallahatchie County near a little town of 250+ people called Sumner. I went off to school at All Saints Episcopal High School in Vicksburg my junior year in high school. Upon graduation I went to Southwestern at Memphis, now called Rhodes College, and later transferred to the University of Texas in Austin where I graduated in 1980 with a BA in Theater.
During my college years I lived in Paris and in Bilbao, Spain during the summers. I enjoy traveling. I lived in Dallas, Memphis 3 different times, Austin, Red Rock, Texas, Philadelphia, PA, Atlanta, GA and New York City where I worked for Putumayo.
I moved back home to the Mississippi Delta to Sumner in 1994 to raise my daughter Corinne. I finally moved to the place where I was born, Clarksdale, in 2010 when my husband, Billy, and I bought the Salon de Boheme on West Second Street, a home I have adored and longed to go in my entire life. When it became available for sale, and Billy and I were newlyweds looking for a place of our own, I couldn't believe it. We feel so blessed to live in it.
In addition, we were wildly blessed when we found out that if we bought the house on West Second, we also got the bonus guest house in the back yard. Oh My! Are you kidding me? It needed a lot of work.
We partially renovated it in 2010. New roof. New siding. Insulation. Basic stuff. Then we rented it to two Teach 4 America girls for 2 years. Once their commitment here in Clarksdale ended, they each returned home to their families and Billy and I had a decision to make. Continue to rent it long term or bite the bullet and fully restore this special place.
Many thousands of dollars later, after 9 weeks, and with the help of our good friend, Interior Designer Marilyn Trainor Storey, we opened the Delta Bohemian Guest House. We adore this place and we think you will too.
Some day, Billy and I have said we might have to move into the back guest house and rent out our big house. It is difficult to describe just how good it feels to be in this guest house. It's something very special and we feel honored and blessed to be it's keepers and to offer it up to new and old friends.
Life is about relationships and we treasure every encounter we have in the home's regard. We look forward to meeting you, welcoming you and giving you a place to experience the Mississippi Delta like nowhere else you have ever stayed.
