The Space

It's a bit unfair to ask me to give a description of my place because I just adore my little 3 bedroom townhouse - my comfy home! I am renting out 2 rooms (one with a double bed @ R250 per night & the other one a 3/4 bed @ R190 per night) with one bathroom (not en suite: shower, basin and toilet) and free wi-fi. 2 Carports, kitchen and livingroom. No pets allowed. I have a huge garden and a nice veranda where you can just chill or watch the sunsets. Quiet neighbourhood near shopping malls, restaurants, cinemas and the Sandton area.
Guest will have use of everything in the house but will be responsible for their own food, washing up and cleaning their room. I do have a domestic worker that comes in once a week to do cleaning, washing and ironing.
Very quiet, safe neighbourhood (also have 24 hour security guards on premises and my house has security doors as well as burglar bars on all windows)
Public transport in South Africa is not very good, so if you are staying for several days, you might consider renting a car. Secure parking is available at my house. The Gautrain station is about 10 km from my home, with the Gautrain bus pick-up and drop-off service about 2 km from the house. Depending on my work schedule, I might be available to show you around the city, or to help with transport for a small fee. If you're adventurous, public buses do run into the centre of Johannesburg from directly outside the complex.

Johannesburg has a wonderful climate but if you find it too hot or cold, I have fans as well as heaters available.

Guest Access

I live in an area that is surrounded by Malls with restaurants, movie theatres and multiple shops. One of the Malls also has a flea market every day. Most within walking distance. The Gautrain in about a 15 minute drive from my house.

Interaction with Guests

I am a freelance worker, so if I do not have a booking, I can drive you around at a small cost for petrol or I can help you with tours to the Apartheid Museum, Lion Park, Cradle of Humankind, Soweto etc.

  • What a hostess Rene was! My first visit to S.A was made most memorable by Rene's generous spirit and warmest hospitality.
The accommodation was clean, quite and private, even though I shared the 3 bed appt with her and one other. Rene was kind enough to take me around sometimes (many thanks for visits to the shops and the Lion Park) and at other times gave me directions and good advice as to getting around Joburg.
I am also grateful for your insights into S.A social and geo political landscape. I thouroughly enjoyed my stay at your place, which contributed to a wonderful and very successful trip to the country. I shall look forward to visiting/meeting you again.
    Stay Blessed.

  • I stayed with Rene for nearly a month and I can honestly say that my stay here surpassed all my expectations. I could not have asked for a more comfortable room, a more convenient location or a more gracious host. The house is spotless and attractively decorated. The bedrooms are comfortable and spacious. The kitchen has everything you need if you wish to cook for yourself. The house itself has 24/7 security and the complex is within easy walking distance of grocery stores and shopping centers. Rene herself is absolutely lovely and is more than happy to go that extra mile to ensure your stay is wonderful. All this for the price of a dorm bed at a backpackers. I would recommend this place to anyone, I don't think you will get better value for your money anywhere in the country.

    Response from Rene:

Doug! You fit in so well in SA, I think you can just come over permanently. And it was a pleasure to have you - and you were always smiling! And I feel very special that you got engaged 'on my watch'.....if you know what I mean :-) You and Grace are welcome any, any time - it would be great to see you again and smell the lovely food you prepared every night again. Thank you for looking after my property as if it was your own! It was a real pleasure!

  • Rene's cosy apartment is wonderful -- and it has everything, including lots of original art. Alas, she was away working in India when I was there in December 2012, but we will meet another time in another place as we both travel. Her friend, Ros -- who lives in the same complex -- took very good care of me. Between these two friends you will enjoy fantastic South African hospitality.

I have no hesitation in giving Rene's place the highest possible recommendation. Stay!

  • My stay at Rene's was extremely pleasant. She has a absolutely beautiful apartment, and everything was sparklingly clean. Unfortunately, Rene herself was out of town at the time, but a friend of hers, Ros, who lives in the same complex, let me in and showed me around. Ros was so nice as to pick me up at the train station nearby and show me around Jo'burg on her day off!

I would recommend staying with Rene to anyone. Everything about the apartment was fantastic, from the room to the kitchen to the beautiful backyard. The location is also very nice, with a huge mall within short walking distance as well as a smaller shopping center even closer. Rene, sorry we didn't get to meet, but thank you so much, I really enjoyed my stay! I'll be sure to let you know if I'm ever back in Jo'burg.

  • Rene is a wonderful host. I felt comfortable even before we met and when we did meet it felt like we had known each other and were friends a long time. Our relationship was easy and deep!! We had conversations about my African travels and Rene's realities. Her home is lovely, with bright pieces of art everywhere, making it a visual delight. I really appreciated having a shower since I sooo don't like baths. Having my own bathroom on the whole was divine!! Rene was accommodating and showed concern for my whereabouts. I was taken to the supermarket, was collected from my previous lodging and we went to Lion's Park together. I truly enjoyed the spent in Randburg with Rene. Usually I am the one who cooks for guests, but this time Rene cooked for me. I am not promising that she will do it for everyone!!! I look forward to hosting her in Barbados one day and of course, if I am ever in Joburg, I will stay no where else. Thank you Rene!!!!!

I am a 47 year old freelancer who works in television sport productions. I don't work regular hours, but might be away for a few days on a job, or I could be at home for several days as well. So I might be available to take you out shopping, or to see the sights of Johannesburg. I also have friends that can take guests for example on a Safari trip to the Pilansberg (about 2 hours from Johannesburg, next to Sun City). When I'm at home I can drive you around (at a small fee for petrol/gas etc) to all the interesting places that make Johannesburg so unique. As I am a South African, I love our animals and I live close to the Lion Park (about 10 kilometres from my house). Here you can play with little lion cubs and feed giraffes. If not on a job, I will be more than happy to show you around. We can even work in a traditional South African 'braai' (barbeque). But one thing is for sure: you will feel welcome in my little Jo'burg haven!
