Description

The Space

Do you need a great B&B to stay at that is in close proximity to the Nation’s Capital but without DC prices? If so, come stay with us! We are Canadians who have traveled around the world extensively and love meeting new people from different locations and backgrounds. When we are not globe-trotting we like to get the same kind of experience by hosting guests in our home.

Though we typically rent one room to BnB guests regularly, we also have an option to rent our entire property or a separate, fully furnished apartment rental at the same location (see linked rental option on the right hand column).

We have a cozy, fully furnished, beautifully decorated, recently renovated, modern Cape Cod home in the Hyattsville Historic Arts District (perimeter of DC). Our home is spacious, clean, and welcoming, reflective of our world travels. We have a spectacular English garden that is available for relaxing with a cup of tea and a good book! It has a large private cobble stone patio for entertaining with an outdoor fireplace and a new stainless steel gas grill. In addition to this we have a large, recently built, rear deck attached to dining room via French doors - leading to an outdoor hot tub. The dining room/kitchen area has been completely renovated with granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances. So if you like to cook a meal while on the go, then this kitchen is for you! :)

The interior of the house is very warm and welcoming. Aside from great ambiance, we have 3 indoor fireplaces (2 gas, one wood burning), 3 full bathrooms, hardwood floors through out with slate tile in the kitchen, energy efficient heating/cooling, ample refrigeration space. The BnB room that is exclusively available to guests is clean and nicely decorated, with a new double bed mattress, a full closet and drawer space for belongings, as well as a private bathroom.

New laundry facilities are available in the house. We have off-street parking on quiet side street in a safe, friendly neighborhood.

Our guests must love dogs and cats. We have 2 wonderful dogs and 4 fantastic cats (all live harmoniously together, and all are super friendly)! They will most certainly win your heart! Though we are extremely clean, if you have allergies to animals then staying with us might not be for you.

Our house is in central location, that is safe walking distance (5 blocks) to West Hyattsville METRO STATION that will deliver you straight into the heart of DC (Green line, 1 stop from Red Line Fort Totten exchange). Our home is also less than 1 mile from the University of Maryland (perfect for football weekends when MD plays at home) and Catholic University. Bus transit stop less than a block away (#12). EASY COMMUTE: 20 minute drive/metro to DC or Silver Spring downtown centers; 20 minute bike ride to the National Mall. Tennis/basketball courts, shopping centers, grocery stores, exercise facilities (LA Fitness (with new pool)), yoga studio, movie theaters, restaurants (including our neighborhood micro-brew pub Franklins, a DC favorite - - Bus Boys and Poets, Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, and Mexican restaurants), city parks, and bike path and nature trails (to Silver Spring and UMD) close by.

We are extremely knowledgeable about various tourist attractions and restaurants in the DC area and are happy to help provide you with all you need to plan your trip. We have guidebooks available at he house to assist you in planing your trip.

We provide fresh linens for all guests, as well as delicious and creative breakfast meals for our from an around the world menu. We decided to bring home the ethnic cooking from our travels and share them with our guests. We always ask our guests ahead of schedule if they have any dietary preferences or 'must haves' before they arrive so we can be sure to make them feel at home. For those guests staying for an extended period (3+ days) we enjoy sharing a dinner meal as well, if time permits.

We are Canadians and legal residents/citizens of the US who have traveled around the world extensively and love meeting new people from different locations and backgrounds. When we are not globe-trotting we like to get the same kind of experience by hosting guests in our home. Gillian was originally born in Brantford, Ontario but later grew up/attended university in Vancouver, British Columbia. There she studied marine biology and oceanography at the University of British Columbia. Today she is a bio-geochemical oceanographer in the environmental sciences domain of CLS America, a French subsidiary of the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in France, supporting global ocean satellite technologies for environmental monitoring and animal tracking. She has traveled extensively around the world for both business and pleasure. Aside from traveling, Gillian enjoys fine arts (she paints), photography, music, gardening, yoga, swim/bike/run triathlon training, tennis, and volleyball. Boe grew up in Carmen, Manitoba before moving abroad with his family to Switzerland. He played Canadian Junior Hockey and later attended Union College in NY on a hockey scholarship. After this he traveled to Europe where he had a successful career playing professional hockey. Now retired, Boe continues to train and is a professional hockey coach and successful business owner. He works in youth hockey development in both the US and in Canada, and most recently in New Zealand. Boe also thoroughly enjoys travel, physical fitness, golf, and adventure sports. Both Gillian and Boe enjoy music, cooking, and playing sports together.

We're expecting our first miracle - our baby boy - in March!

If you are interested in either our BnB room, the separate apartment rental OR rental of he entire house (see linked rental space on right column), please contact us. We would love to host you! :)

Gillian & Boe & SuperKai

Gillian & Boe & SuperKai

Washington, District of Columbia, United States · Member since June 2009

Gillian, Boe and their son Kailen are friendly, outdoorsy professionals/parents/child who seek adventure and love world travel. To stay active, they enjoy hiking (especially with their dogs Juneau and Blue), biking, kayaking, skiing, volleyball, tennis, and golf. They also enjoy music and photography, as well as cooking (with a complimentary glass of wine and an apple juice for Kailen! ;-))...

As a family they actively participate in volunteering to serve environmental leadership and animal welfare projects, as well as assisting with the protection of wildlife throughout the world. Gillian and Boe actively participate in the protection and conservation of elephants (particularly the heavily endangered African elephant) as well as the African lion.

Gillian is a marine scientist who has had a career working on climate related issues in the Arctic. After a decade long career working for NOAA's Climate Observations Division, Gillian now manages the Environmental Monitoring Division of CLS America. CLS (Collecte Localisation Satellites), a subsidiary of Centre Nationals d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER) and several French financial institutions, offers satellite services in location, environmental data collection and ocean observations and monitoring to a broad range of professionals including government, industry and the scientific community. Gillian is a breast cancer survivor who recently celebrated 3 years remission by hiking to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania!

Boe is a former professional hockey player and is now the President and CEO of his own global hockey development company, leading youth hockey development, mentorship and professional coaching in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Mongolia.

Kailen is a happy 2.5 year old independently thinking boy, who enjoys exploring everything and anything new - always asking LOTS of questions! He has a particular affinity for his big dogs Juneau and Blue, and enjoys pulling the tails of his cats. He LOVES trains, art and gymnastics. He is most happy playing with balls and pucks and building new structures with his legos.

Both Gillian and Boe are originally from Canada. Kailen was born in Washington, DC.
