The closest beaches are on St. George Island, about a 15 minute drive from Apalachicola. From the Cypress house, drive back towards downtown Apalach, turn right at the blinking caution light at the corner of the Grill Restaurant. Follow HWY 98 through town and onto the Apalachicola Bridge. When you cross the bridge, take your first RIGHT in Eastpoint (directly past the Cypress Corner Fruit Stand). Continue to the "Y", veer RIGHT onto the St. George Island Bridge. You will arrive on St. George Island.
Lighthouse park behind the lighthouse-
When you get to the island stop sign, turn right and then left into convenient island parking. The public beach is not only easy to find but there are bath house facilities, covered pavilions for picnics, a playground and ball court for the younger generations. The Cape St. George Lighthouse and lighthouse Keeper's House are also located in nearby Lighthouse Park. Like most beaches in Franklin County this beach gently slopes and, although there are no lifeguards on duty, the surf requires only normal caution to be fun for the whole family. Naturally you should use caution on any beach during rough weather, but difficult swimming conditions are a rarity here.
St George Island State Park At the lighthouse take a left onto Gulf Beach Drive and drive till you reach the park (website hidden). George Island State Park beach, located at the far east end on St. George Island, was ranked in the Top 10 by Dr. Beach. At nine miles in length, this is the longest beach front state park in Florida. And you have a lot of choices how to enjoy it. There are two large beach use areas with ample parking, picnic pavilions, beach house facilities, grills and boardwalks. This beach is renowned for its soft, white sand, gentle surf and softly-sloping bottom that makes for easy beach enjoyment for the whole family. If you would like more privacy there's plenty of beach that is easy to get to. A number of small pull-off parking areas provide boardwalk access all along the length of the beach. Fishing is a common activity with spring bringing locally famous runs of pompano and Spanish mackerel, while the fall months bring redfish and speckled trout. Pets are allowed on leashes in parking lots but not on the beaches. Alcohol is not allowed in the park. There is an entrance fee and please observe the speed limit rules as they are enforced. When you bring the family to St. George Island State Park you'll find Florida beaches the way they used to be.
Both provide public access to the beach with restrooms, picnic tables, and other amenities. And, most of the north/south roads on the island provide a public access to the beach.
The closest boat launch (other than Bay City Lodge) is Abercombie Landing. It is located up river from the house. From the Cypress House, take a RIGHT onto Bluff Road (12th Street). Follow Bluff Road until it comes to an end.(about 1.5 miles) Abercombie Rd will be on the Left. Turn LEFT, follow Abercombie Road (about .5 miles) until you arrive at the Boat Ramps.
To launch directly into Apalachicola Bay, you will use the marina located underneath the Apalachicola Bridge. From the Cypress house, drive back towards Downtown Apalachicola. At the blinking caution light at the corner of the Grill Restaurant, drive STRAIGHT through the light. Drive 2 blocks to WATER STREET. Turn RIGHT. Follow Water Street towards the Apalachicola Bridge. The marina will be on your left. Locals call this marina the "10 Foot Hole".
Guided boat, kayak & paddle board tours are available at the Apalachicola Maritime Museum located downtown. Fishing guides are available for whole or half day trips into the Bay & Gulf of Mexico.
The area is surrounded by state parks and national forests including Tate's Hell State Park where several stands of unique dwarf cypress trees are located, some are documented to be over 150 years old. Ochlockonee River State Park & St. George Island State Park are great for birding, hiking, fishing & camping. Wakulla Springs State Park is home of one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world. Daily guided riverboat tours provide a closer view of wildlife, and glass bottom boat tours are offered when the water is clear.
The Apalachicola National Forest made up of almost 600,000 acres of wetlands & forest is part of the State's Recreational Trail System. Take a trip across Apalachicola Bay to one of the barrier islands - St Vincent National Wildlife Refuge, Cape St George, or Dog Island. Fort Gadsden Historic Site is located on the east bank of the Apalachicola River approximately 45 minutes north of Eastpoint, accessed by Highway 65. The site interprets the role of Native and African Americans during the early (website hidden). Joseph Peninsula State Park has miles of white sand beaches & striking dunes over a 2000 acre park. Excellent snorkeling, swimming, birding, camping. Voted #2 beach in the nation by Dr. Beach.
For a scenic drive, the Big Bend Scenic Byway drive is approximately 220 miles in length. The Forest and Coastal Trails offer two distinct experiences, culminate in a two-day drive unlike any other. The route follows an ancient sea bed with an elevation drop from 230 feet to sea level. Black Bear, Bobcat, Turkey, Fox, Deer, Coyote, or Wild Hog could appear at any moment and most of the drive is on public, un-fenced land. On the Apalachicola Blueway, paddle the length of the magnificant Apalachicola River for 105 miles from the Jim Woodruff Dam to the city of Apalachicola.

We loved our stay at Cypress House! The place was clean, well- stocked, comfortable, and in a quiet neighborhood not far from town, good food, and miles of beaches. We would definitely come back, but maybe later in the year next time when the weather is a little warmer. Crackling fires in the fireplace made the place cozy at night.
We were so excited to stay at this cabin. We had driven from Miami on a visit from the Uk. We paid $550 for a 2 night stay. We were just so disappointed. Beds downstairs very uncomfortable, no sound insulation between floors, it was pictured and advertised as being in the woods but in reality there was an industrial yard to the side of the house and it sits at a road junction. The house had a very strong smell as I guess the toilets hadn't been used for a while??? There was not even a toilet roll in the downstairs loo. The lamps upstairs didn't work. There was no outdoor touches apart from the basic furniture. No candles or anything nice. It was just the basic chairs with 2 buckets full of cigarette ends. The basic house however is gorgeous and could be so great. The area was fun with lots of nice places to visit and eat and shop. This house however was very overpriced. We have been travelling around and stayed at many similar places so we do know price comparisons and what some people do to make your stay a great one. I am so sad to write this review as I really wanted to love this place!
Fiona, we are sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. I will speak with our Apalach manager Merrill regarding the issues you spotlighted that we can do something about (smells, cigarette butts). We have guests return year after year... a high compliment that we believe has everything to do with our commitment to taking care of the house, responding immediately to feedback like this, and doing everything we can to make our guests comfortable... it is our house after all and we stay frequently throughout the year. Your feedback is most certainly appreciated.
We (a group of four) celebrated christmas in Cabin-in-the-woods, in front of the amazing fireplace. Since booking, this has been the highlight of a two week southern roadtrip, and cabin-in-the-woods lived up to every expectation.
Apalachicola, a town we stopped in just to stay in this cabin (which we randomly found when looking for a place to stay in Florida, and stumbled over Cabin-in-the-woods) turned out to be just almost as charming as the cabin itself.
We love Cabin-in-the-woods. We never wanted to leave. We will for sure go back one day!
Cabin in the Woods is beautiful! It was so peaceful and quiet and close to everything we wanted to do. I was worried before I left because we had to travel light ( we rode our Harley's) and my fears were quickly subsided when we entered and found the home was stocked with EVERYTHING we could possibly need. The place was very clean and comfortable. Thank you for sharing your home with us!
We loved it very much in your cosy cabin. Perfect for christmas! We spent a marvellous time. Many thanks Amanda.
We loved the Cypress House; the kind of place I could retire in! The place was neat as a pin, and well stocked with every thing we needed. Perfect size for our family of six and an easy drive to the beach and everything else we wanted to do in Apalach. Would love to come back in the fall/winter and use that fireplace!
We absolutely loved the cabin and the little town. A car is a must to see all that Apalachicola has to offer. We drove to St. George Island to enjoy the beach everyday and made fires inside on the chilly nights. The cabin was clean and had everything we could possibly need.
