About this listing
We live in a cape cod style home in the Emerson neighborhood just 3 miles from downtown. It's a pleasant, walkable neighborhood with friendly neighbors and small businesses.
You'll have the entire closet space to store your things, hang your clothes, etc. We'll supply an extra blanket in the closet, a hamper, hangers, a fan, towels, and a suitcase stand. We've since replaced the windows since this photo was taken.
Welcome to Madison! You're going to LOVE IT!
Your comfortable, peaceful, nature inspired bedroom is located on the first floor, right next to the bathroom of a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home. You'll have your own personal access to your room from the front patio door and your own closet. The bed is a queen size with a foam top, cotton sheets, a soft and fuzzy blanket, nice plump pillows, and a heavy quilt. We'll supply an extra blanket in the closet for your comfort, a dresser, a small fan for those who enjoy white noise, an iron and ironing board and a hamper.
Your personal bathroom is located right outside your bedroom door and it's stocked full of towels, shampoo, conditioner, soap and a hair dryer. Since we have a full bath upstairs, we won't be using yours at all.
We also have a spacious back deck with room to soak up the sun, or to entertain a grill out. Our deck table can seat 6 so please feel free to invite your friends or family over for a meal.
The living room, dining room and kitchen are all shared so feel free to make yourselves at home and feel free to put any of your food in the fridge. We have apple tv, basic cable and XBMC if you're interested in watching tv in the living room. (Briggs, our pug mix, will likely want to be by your side if you choose to do so. He loves a good show/movie)
We do like to note that we had a baby in Dec 2014 so guests aren't surprised when they arrive. He sleeps with us upstairs and is generally a great baby. We both have day jobs so we'll be gone during the week from 7:30-4pm, but our nanny, our son and another lil baby will be there during the day on M, T, W and F.
We offer breakfast items to those that are staying under two weeks, but we'd like our long term guests to purchase their own breakfast foods, with the exception to eggs. We have plenty of urban farm fresh eggs to go around!
If all that sounds OK, then we'd love to have you! Let us know if you have any questions for us!
Your room is located just beyond the front entryway so you'll have a key to the front door, but we also supply you with a key to the back door as well. (the door we use)
Interaction with Guests
We interact with guests as our schedule and theirs allow. Most of our guests are very personable so we generally spend some time getting to know one another. We're usually pretty busy in the spring, summer and fall months so we spend a lot of time away from the home, but we like it if we're able to meet every guest. We always tell guests that our home is their home, to make themselves comfortable, help themselves to anything in the kitchen, and to let us know if they need anything at all.
We live in the Emerson neighborhood, adjacent to the Atwood neighborhood where there's plenty of small businesses to explore. Our neighborhood is a safe, walkable neighborhood with lots of friendly neighbors.
We live in a straight, biracial, trans, family oriented and gay community and we're very proud of it. Everyone is welcome at our home and we encourage open mindedness and peace.
We offer our bicycles for guests to use, but we also have two bus lines near our home. One is just 1 block from our home and the other is 2.5 blocks. We've had a lot of UW students/professors and they've found it very easy to get around by bus.
Other Things to Note
I'm going to make a short list of what I think you should see/do while you're here. We're a 1 car family and I bike everywhere so everything I list will be bike/walk friendly.
1) Frank Lloyd Wright Monona Terrace-bike up to the terrace and walk to the rooftop. The view of Lake Monona is breathtaking.
2) Visit the capital. You can do a quick walk through to the Rotunda just to take in the view.
3) Bike down State St from the (website hidden) Street is considered our shopping district and it has a lot of shops, restaurants, bars, theaters, and museums. It ends at the University square so you'll be able to see some of the college. From there you can bike (1.5 blocks) to the Union Terrace.
4) Union Terrace-Union Terrace is the University's best place for outdoor drinking/socializing. It's located right on Lake Mendota so the best time to go is right at sunset. They have some great microbrews on tap and you can order food as well. (get a brat, or two!) And don't forget to sit in the gigantic chair for a photo op!
5) Bike down to Picnic Point for the best view of Madison. It's a short 3 mile bike ride from the Union Terrace and it follows Lake Mendota the whole way.
6) Madison has some of the best restaurants in the US, seriously. We have the most diverse restaurants per capita in the US, so it all depends on what type of food you like. My fav locations are Old Fashioned, Graze, Marigolds, Sardine, Coopers Tavern, Weary Traveler, and Ha Long Bay.
We ask that you smoke outside, clean up after yourself, refrain from being noisy after 11pm, but most of all, enjoy yourselves!
Your room. The door you see here opens to the hallway, and into the dining room. The bathroom is directly to the left, in the hallway.
We had a fabulous experience at Cory and Ryan's home. They were very easy going and hospitable. Our first night we spent with them on their porch and they told us about Madison.
Can't stay enough about staying with Cory and Ryan. Amazing people, great home, we immediately felt welcome and comfortable. Sebastian is a great baby and Briggs is the best pup ever! Their home is very close to downtown madison and we rode their bikes into town for farmers market. What an amazing stay!
Cory and Ryan were excellent hosts! My friend and I were literally only there to sleep and shower because we were competing in an event in the morning, but the check-in was seamless, bed was comfortable, and the private bathroom was well-stocked. We were offered breakfast options in the morning, but opted to try 4 and 20 Bakery a few blocks away instead. (I love trying new bakeries.) And their dog Biggs and little son are just the sweetest things. I definitely recommend them and would stay again.
I was in Madison to help someone in my family with an apartment hunt. Cory and Ryan's home was an oasis of peace and normalcy during a really hectic week. It's clean, comfortable, and so welcoming. The bed and shower are amazing, and my room had plenty of maps and resources. Their home has a very laid-back, cheerful vibe; I couldn't have been more relaxed. And Briggs is a real gentleman. :-) There is nothing I can think of that I could have needed and wasn't available. Cory and Ryan are warm and informative hosts -- a great introduction to the area!
What a lovely house. Indeed I loved the space and the bed and the pretty bath, the lovely little boy who showed me his chickens, and most especially Mr. Briggs, the dog I tried to steal away in my suitcase. Mr. Briggs is easily the 2nd cutest dog in the world. It was probably just my inner insecurities, but I did feel a bit intrusive and at times awkward, despite all efforts otherwise. I didn't quite feel at home enough to make use of the kitchen, for example, and barely chatted with the hosts. They were easily contacted via airbnb and we arranged my arrival this way, since they were not available. This is, however, a super convenient, safe and very tidy place to stay, and there is plenty of available street parking.
Cory and Ryan are friendly folks whose home is a welcoming haven located in a peaceful neighborhood. I had access to the kitchen, garden deck for dining and a comfy porch swing to while away my time listening to the birds and neighborhood "music." If you have questions about places of interest or raising chickens, they have answers. Bikes were also available for leisurely neighborhood exploring. Willy Street with its restaurants and shops was a comfortable walk away. It was a most pleasant stop in my travels in Madison.
Cory and Ryan's home is lovely. The guest bedroom and bath are cozy, inviting, and were more than I could have hoped for (rainfall shower head is a total bonus!).
While I did not get to meet Cory, Ryan was wonderful to make me feel right at home. Through the gamut of topics we chatted about, it became clear to that he and Cory both enjoy life to its very fullest, and are incredible ambassadors for Madison, and Wisconsin at large. I would love to stay with them again, and fully intend to plan a trip to Madison as soon as possible!
About the Host, Cory And Ryan
We're Ryan & Cory. Nice to meet you! We've lived in active, charming Madison, WI for about 5 years now. We opened up our home to guests about 2 years ago and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we've made.
Epic adventure seekers and outdoor lovers, in 2013 we trekked across Wyoming, sailed the San Juan islands, got married in Madison, overlooking the beautiful Lake Monona, and then we headed on a honeymoon adventure to Indonesia.
We just had a baby boy in Nov 2014, so we've been busy getting to know/raise him. He sleeps upstairs with us so rest assured that you won't be sleeping next to a baby's room. We both have day jobs so we're gone from 7:30-4 everyday, but our nanny, son, and Estlin (another lil baby) will be at the house M, T, W, and F.
We love to spend our free time outdoors, exercising or sitting out on our back deck, enjoying local brews and company. Cory's a vegetarian who loves to travel, meet new people and insists on biking anywhere within 20 miles. Ryan is a laid back Midwesterner who loves to fish, read, and take photographs.
We've loved hosting on Airbnb and we continue to book airbnb's when we travel. The whole experience has been so rewarding and insightful.
