ITAEWON : The Global Community in Seoul: Global Fashions and Foods
Itaewon is a unique place in Seoul where one can meet people of diverse nationalities and cultures. There is a popular joke saying that international residents may not know Seoul, but they know Itaewon. Seoul even designated Itaewon as its first ‘Special Tourism District,’ to highlight it as a destination for internationals to enjoy a diversity of culture, shopping, and entertainment experiences.
Itaewon is in the middle of Yongsan-gu, which borders the northern part of the Hangang River. It is also close to Seoul Station, Myeong-dong, and Namsan Mountain. The formation of this exotic and global tourism site is closely associated with modern Korean history.
In the aftermath of the Korean War, American soldiers began to stay in the Yongsan Garrison and, consequently, numerous businesses and housing complexes were formed in Yongsan. In preparation for international meetings, the Seoul Asian and Olympic Games, the government strengthened tourism infrastructures and revitalized commerce, prompting international tourists from other parts of the world (such as Japan, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, etc.) to visit Itaewon.
Itaewon typically refers to the street full of stores, restaurants, and stalls over 1.4 kilometers between Itaewon 1-dong and Hannam 2-dong in the east. Fashion shops specialize in various imported clothes, leather goods, fur goods, handbags, shoes, and antique furniture. Big and tall sizes unavailable in other areas are well-stocked, and experienced tailors offer customized clothes.
Another one of Itaewon’s many draws is its diverse food culture, which features cuisine from around world. Restaurants right behind Hamilton Hotel form a type of exhibition hall for international foods from Korea, New York, London, India, Thailand, China, Greece, Pakistan, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, and more. Unique flavors, exotic interiors, and diverse nationalities help to make Itaewon befittingly ‘the global village in Seoul.’

We have a pleasant stay at CozyPlace. House is clean and just nice for six of us. Well located and walking distance to nearby public transport station. It is also near Halal food mart where we buy Halal chicken and meat. We feel at home since we can cook for the family.
Except for the slope to reach the house, it was a nice place to stay for the family.
This was our second time staying at Youngjin's place. Again, it proved just perfect for what we needed... a quiet and private place :)
Excellent location and very kind and helpful people. The only drawback was that when we arrived, it was freezing cold outside and inside. We hardly managed to raise the temperature to 15oC in the living-room a bit more in the bedrooms. Overall it was a good experience but we will come back only during the Summer ;-)
We love Joungjin's apartment. We were not treated like visitors, but more like family. Hi grandparents greeted us upon our arrival and we immediately felt at home. Of course, we also met his father and Youngjin himself, who are both very warm & welcoming as well.
The apartment location is perfect. 2 things we looked for in any location we rent: transportation & food. Yes, this apartment is closed to a Korea Metro Train Station. All kinds of food are everywhere in the neighborhood, from American fast food, to funky restaurant, to fine dinning, to cheap side walk vendors, and even local food shops. The location is very quiet, peaceful, but within 2 minutes walk, you can be in the middle of the action, where all the clubs and nice restaurants are located.
Youngjin's apartment is highly recommended and we will definitely stay here again if we ever come back to Seoul.
Terrific location on quiet alley a couple of minutes walk from Itaewon's lively nightlife district. Feels safe. 5 minutes to Itaewon station. Helpful, courteous family. Shabby and cleanliness just ok. Grappling hooks would help to climb stairs to front door.
Youngjin's place has the basics and is comfortable. We had 4 people stay with an extra bed in the living area. This made it a bit tight, but still manageable (since we were away most of the time).
Though the place is about 5 mins walk from Itaewon station, there's an uphill section. The stairs (though short), leading up to the 3rd floor are very steep. Not too much of a problem for the guys on the trip, but for me in my 16th wk of pregnancy, it was rather tiring, but do-able. After a long day of walking/shopping we didn't look forward to this stretch.
A great place for those of normal fitness ability, who want easy access to the station, lots of restaurants and a great nightlife! Because there are so many expats around, for non-Korean speakers like us, this was an ideal place to stay. Check-in/out was a breeze.
Our stay at Younjin Joo place was very enjoyable. The apartment was clean, bright and well equipped. The location in Itaewon was perfect for shopping and touring around.
They met us on our arrival and made sure we were comfortable.
youngjin was extremely helpful and his family were very hospitable. this two bed place is a good deal for seoul and the location is good, near the subway station. our taxi driver refused to drive up the narrow alley to get close to the apartment (you can't drive right to the door) which was a bit of a hassle with two kids and lot of luggage, but we managed. the washing machine was a godsend and it was great to have a kitchen so that we could make a couple of simple meals.
This place is in a very good location if you do not mind a very tourist like environment. The host family was outstanding. The unit was clean however, not updated. The only real concern was that the beds did not have mattresses on them. They both only consisted of the box spring. Both box springs were mad up with linens. This was very uncomfortable during sleep. To the host family, get some mattresses for those box springs you are calling beds.
Youngjin's place was a delight. He was easy to contact and gave detailed instructions (along with photos) on how to access his guesthouse. The house was clean, comfortable, and quiet. It is well located and has a great view of the neighborhood. Although we didn't get to meet Yongjin directly, his sweet grandparents checked us in and helped us when we needed it.
