The Space

Enjoy Kendal and the Lakes!

Double room available for female travellers, couples, parent and child over 7 years.

My home
Come and stay in my modern and recently refurbished 3 bedroom Kendal home on a small estate which has a play field and children's playground. The river is lovely to sit by and is 5 minutes away. There is also a Leisure Centre with a swimming pool 3 minutes away.
I love having family and friends to stay and have now opened up my home to travellers of all ages and types who seem to be enjoying it - see the reviews.
I can offer you a clean and comfortable double room with lots of storage space and TV with DVDs. The bed is 4' x 6'6''. I charge £26 for single occupancy and £35 for two people which I think is great value, especially with a toast and cereal type breakfast in this price.
There is a clean and modern shared shower room next door to your bedroom.

I provide towels, hairdryer, hot water bottles and a spare duvet, though the house is lovely and warm.

I provide 'a help yourself breakfast' of tea/coffee/hot chocolate/ fruit teas and herbal teas and toast with jam/marmalade. I can recomment the Union Jack cafe only 10 minutes walk away for a good value full English breakfast. Kendal has several restaurants and cafes I like to visit and can recommend. There is also a good chip shop only 5 minutes walk away.
Please feel welcome to make yourself drinks from the kitchen during your stay.

Transport links
I am 15 minutes walk from the mainline station at Oxenholme or the branchline in Kendal, though I will pick you up from Oxenholme if I can. If you are driving I can provide off road parking and there is space at the back of my house for a couple of bikes. ( It's a great area for road or cross country cycling).
By train you can be in London in under 3 hours, Glasgow or Edinburgh in 2 hours or Manchester in a bit over an hour.

Kendal town
The lively market town of Kendal is only 15 minutes walk from my house. As well as the historical yards, an interesting parish church and a lovely river there are shops, restaurants, pubs, the nationally acclaimed Abbot Hall Art Gallery, the fantastic Brewery Arts Centre with its theatre, cinema, dance and music events as well as the unusual VAT bar, the Warehouse and a restaurant. You'll understand why I spend much of my spare time at the Brewery!
Kendal also hosts several excellent festivals during the year, from Mountain films to Mime when local accommodation gets booked up - so book in advance.
A walk up the hill to Kendal Castle gives you great views of the area.
There is an excellent indoor climbing wall if you come to climb and get rained off.

The local area
Of course you will want to explore the beauty of the local area with Lake Windermere only 8 miles away and Keswick 30 miles, both accessible by bus from the town. The Furness Peninsula and the Yorkshire Dales are close by for a day trip.
There are endless low level or fell walks and outdoor activities to enjoy.
Having lived here for nearly 40 years I can give you local information and practical ideas for your stay but I also provide maps, books and leaflets for your reference.

I have two cats, not allowed upstairs. They will however enjoy an evening snooze on your knee, if you invite them, whilst you watch TV or sit and chat by the woodburner in my relaxing sitting room. There is a piano you are very welcome to play if you are at all musical.
On a warm evening why not sit out in the garden.

I am looking forward to meeting you and do hope you'll make a visit soon.

  • Had a great time at Helen's. The house is only 15mins walk from the town center and the central bus station, which we take the bus to explore the lake district is 20mins away. Her house is lovely and the kitties are sweet and cute!!! The breakfast is decent, the jam she provided is locally sourced, really like that part. The dvd she had in he bedroom kept us entertained, especially on a rainy day. Anyways, Definitely the best place to stay!!

  • Helen was a great host, whose home makes a great base for exploring the Lakes from. She was very knowledgeable about the area: walks, sights, food and so on, and provided plenty of leaflets, guides and maps to help manage our stay. We felt very welcome, both by her and by her two very affectionate cats. She went the extra mile in her hosting, picking us up from the station when we arrived and dropping us off when we left. Thanks for having us, highly recommended!

  • Helen’s house was exactly what we needed to explore the area around Kendal. Helen and her two lovely cats were great hosts: very welcoming and easy-going. If you’re looking for an enormous room then this probably isn’t for you but we had more than enough space for the both of us. The bed is very comfortable and we had the luxury of watching a good selection of DVDs from our bed. A great way to recover from our cycling trip! We could park the car on her drive and leave the bike at the back, which was very convenient. The good “help yourself” breakfast prepared us for the day and we can confirm what other cyclists have told us: it’s a beautiful area!

    Thanks Helen!

  • We stayed at Helen's Home for 2 nights, the room was clean with towels and bottled water provided and many information brochures and books of the local and surrounding areas which came in very useful. The shower was strong and hot and the bed warm and cosy.
Helen was a great host who made us feel very welcome and provided us with great recommendations of places to eat locally. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone!

  • I had great two nights in this beautiful comfy house - with these cute cats. Helen is such a thoughtful woman and gave loads of considetation to me. You can play the piano in the lounge if you are musical! The station is in walkable distance and so does the town. You will never regret!

  • Our stay with Helen was more hospitable than we could have asked for. My colleague and I were often up and out early, and back late in the evenings, and this was no issue for Helen. Free access to the house and utilities as and when we pleased, which was outstandingly generous of Helen.

A wonderful host, and very helpful with recommendations/info about the local area. We were even greeted at the Oxenholme train station with a ride back to Kendal, which was a fantastic welcome to a great weekend stay.

Thoroughly recommended! 5* Shall be returning no doubt soon.

  • It was our first experience with airbnb and I am glad to say that Helen was an excellent host. She was very friendly and she made us feel comfortable during the whole weekend.

The house was very clean and well maintained. It seems that it has been recently refurbished and all the common areas (bathroom, kitchen and living room) were in very good shape.

Finally, I really appreciate the small details offered by Helen in our stay, like having a small bottle of water and kendal sweets in the bedside or having access to lots of books about the Lake district in the room which helped us a lot to decide our walking routes.

I totally recommend her as a host and if I go back to the Lake District again it will be my first option.

  • We stayed at Helen's place over the weekend of the Kendal mountain film festival and Helen was extremely welcoming, and we felt we were staying with a friend!! The accommodation is very comfortable, with access to kitchen and other living areas. It's in a great position close to town, just a short walk. We will definitely return, as we felt so at home here. Thanks Helen for a lovely stay.

  • This was a lovely place, about a 15 minutes walk from the center of Kendal–the walk was very straightforward & took you over some bridges. Helen, herself was very welcoming and kind–she even offered to drive me up to meet my friends one night when it was raining. Also, she had a very diverse selection of jams for toast–which is one of my favourite things for brekky.

  • Helen is a wonderful host. She offered to pick us up at Oxenholme train station. Both Kendal and Oxenholme are quiet & peaceful towns. Helen's home is very beautiful, lovely & comfortable. She is so kind to show us around Kendal and even hosted us on a tour of the lake district. We couldn't have experienced more on our own.

Hi there I really enjoy Air B and B hosting. My daughter does it and she has met some great people so she got me started. I think that's what it's all about for me .... meeting new people and helping them feel welcome and interested in this town and area. I'm easy going and get along fine with people of all ages. I like music, film, theatre, the outdoors and my family and friends. I'm learning French again after many years. I have two adult children who still seem to enjoy coming home for creature comforts and it's always nice when they bring friends. I'm recently early semi-retired, though working again part time for this year, and now seems like a great time to give this a go. I will do all I can to help you feel welcome in my home. Looking forward to hearing from you Helen
