Enjoy Kendal and the Lakes!
Double room available for female travellers, couples, parent and child over 7 years.
Come and stay in my modern and recently refurbished 3 bedroom Kendal home on a small estate which has a play field and children's playground. The river is lovely to sit by and is 5 minutes away. There is also a Leisure Centre with a swimming pool 3 minutes away.
I love having family and friends to stay and have now opened up my home to travellers of all ages and types who seem to be enjoying it - see the reviews.
I can offer you a clean and comfortable double room with lots of storage space and TV with DVDs. The bed is 4' x 6'6''. I charge £26 for single occupancy and £35 for two people which I think is great value, especially with a toast and cereal type breakfast in this price.
There is a clean and modern shared shower room next door to your bedroom.
I provide towels, hairdryer, hot water bottles and a spare duvet, though the house is lovely and warm.
I provide 'a help yourself breakfast' of tea/coffee/hot chocolate/ fruit teas and herbal teas and toast with jam/marmalade. I can recomment the Union Jack cafe only 10 minutes walk away for a good value full English breakfast. Kendal has several restaurants and cafes I like to visit and can recommend. There is also a good chip shop only 5 minutes walk away.
Please feel welcome to make yourself drinks from the kitchen during your stay.
I am 15 minutes walk from the mainline station at Oxenholme or the branchline in Kendal, though I will pick you up from Oxenholme if I can. If you are driving I can provide off road parking and there is space at the back of my house for a couple of bikes. ( It's a great area for road or cross country cycling).
By train you can be in London in under 3 hours, Glasgow or Edinburgh in 2 hours or Manchester in a bit over an hour.
The lively market town of Kendal is only 15 minutes walk from my house. As well as the historical yards, an interesting parish church and a lovely river there are shops, restaurants, pubs, the nationally acclaimed Abbot Hall Art Gallery, the fantastic Brewery Arts Centre with its theatre, cinema, dance and music events as well as the unusual VAT bar, the Warehouse and a restaurant. You'll understand why I spend much of my spare time at the Brewery!
Kendal also hosts several excellent festivals during the year, from Mountain films to Mime when local accommodation gets booked up - so book in advance.
A walk up the hill to Kendal Castle gives you great views of the area.
There is an excellent indoor climbing wall if you come to climb and get rained off.
The local area
Of course you will want to explore the beauty of the local area with Lake Windermere only 8 miles away and Keswick 30 miles, both accessible by bus from the town. The Furness Peninsula and the Yorkshire Dales are close by for a day trip.
There are endless low level or fell walks and outdoor activities to enjoy.
Having lived here for nearly 40 years I can give you local information and practical ideas for your stay but I also provide maps, books and leaflets for your reference.
I have two cats, not allowed upstairs. They will however enjoy an evening snooze on your knee, if you invite them, whilst you watch TV or sit and chat by the woodburner in my relaxing sitting room. There is a piano you are very welcome to play if you are at all musical.
On a warm evening why not sit out in the garden.
I am looking forward to meeting you and do hope you'll make a visit soon.
We stayed at Helen's place over the weekend of the Kendal mountain film festival and Helen was extremely welcoming, and we felt we were staying with a friend!! The accommodation is very comfortable, with access to kitchen and other living areas. It's in a great position close to town, just a short walk. We will definitely return, as we felt so at home here. Thanks Helen for a lovely stay.
This was a lovely place, about a 15 minutes walk from the center of Kendal–the walk was very straightforward & took you over some bridges. Helen, herself was very welcoming and kind–she even offered to drive me up to meet my friends one night when it was raining. Also, she had a very diverse selection of jams for toast–which is one of my favourite things for brekky.
Helen is a wonderful host. She offered to pick us up at Oxenholme train station. Both Kendal and Oxenholme are quiet & peaceful towns. Helen's home is very beautiful, lovely & comfortable. She is so kind to show us around Kendal and even hosted us on a tour of the lake district. We couldn't have experienced more on our own.
My husband and I stayed at Helen's for 3 nights and found the accommodation fine and Helen absolutely wonderful. She's a warm, intelligent woman who goes out of her way to help you. She even drove us to a Thai restaurant in town when we told her we liked Thai food. You couldn't do better for a Lakes District home base. Quiet, clean, and comfy. The rooom is a bit small for 2, but we only were in it to sleep. A wonderful value! And Helen does make you feel as if it is your home.
If you book with Helen, be sure you get explicit directions to the house, as the numbering system on her street is a bit confusing and makes it harder to find the house.
Great place to stay, lots of travel tips from Helen and good coffee! Kitties were sleek and sweet, too. Off street parking and food within walking distance, and Helen is an excellent host.
We had a great time in Kendal with Helen and her cats. The location is great for both walking and as a base for exploring the Lakes. We walked from Helen's home all through the town, up to Kendal Castle, and through the Serpentine Woods all in one day. Grasmere, Rydal Water and Ullswater were all less than an hour away by car. Parking our car at the house was very convenient.
Having breakfast provided was great--getting cereal, tea and crumpets every morning before heading out makes such a difference. The large living room downstairs is a great place to relax, talk and read, and the bedroom upstairs was very quiet and comfortable. Helen's extensive collection of books and maps for the Lakes District were so helpful! We used them and her suggestions to plan our daily outings Thank you for a great stay!
I had really great time!!
Helen is very kind and nice person.
On a rainy day she drove me to Hiltop which was really good!!( if she didn't, I might be staying my room all-day)
I knew little about Beatrix Potter but Helen told me a lot of stories so I could enjoy the Hiltop. and on our way back to home she showed me little town, and old pub. :-)
she has two lovely cats, they are so nice! you'll love them!
and room is also good. there are many nice dvds. (Miss. Potter was my favorite) ;-)
Kendal is very lovely place, and you should see the Lake district!!
highly recommend Helen's house :-)
We were greatly warmly by Helen, who provided us with lots of books and maps of the Lakes District. Though our room was on the small side, it was bright and sunny. Breakfast was as Helen describes, just help yourself to juice, cereal, tea and toast. We could also use the kitchen to make tea/coffee as needed. Helen has two cats which can be restricted from your room. Though they have free roam of the living area and kitchen. Helen's B and B is value for money if looking for a place close to the beautiful Lakes District, and as a host, Helen is warm and accommodating.
Helen is a very welcoming and helpful host. She really wanted us to have a lovely time and provided everything we needed to have an excellent stay. Her two cats are adorable and were no trouble at all. The room is exactly as it appears on the listing. A large selection of DVDs, CDs and excellent books for discovering the Lake District was provided. All in all it was a pleasant stay and we would highly recommend Helen's Home!
Great time! A beautiful part of the country. The room was great and the bed was comfortable. In the morning we helped ourselves to breakfast. We felt very much at home. In the evening we sat around with Helen having great talks about the UK and the US, answering each others questions about our countries, customs, and cultures. She has traveled all over the UK and Europe and so was a wealth of information. She informed us about getting a senior train pass (yea, we're old) which cost 23 pounds each, but saved us a bunch on all of our advance purchase of train tickets. We would definitely stay with Helen again if she would have us.
