My sweet turn of the century cottage is located on 2 acres in the village of Mill River, MA. This is truly the best of both worlds - you get the quiet seclusion of a house nestled in the woods, across from the Konkopot River, with accessibility to everything the Berkshires has to offer. The village of New Marlborough (of which Mill River is part of) is tiny and picturesque, but it offers 3 exceptional restaurants (The Inn on the Green, Southfield Store, and Gedney Farm), a well stocked general store, and many gorgeous and public natural wonders (Umpachene Falls, Campbell Falls, Questing, Dry Hill Reservation). 10 minutes to Great Barrington, 20 minutes to Infinity Hall in Norfolk,CT, 30 minutes to Tanglewood. Perfect accommodations if you need a place to stay when attending a wedding or event at Gedney Farm (2 miles down the road). Bedrooms are beautifully furnished - one with 2 twin beds and one with an antique double bed, both with ceiling fans, plus a sofa bed for one in the downstairs parlour. Although it is not air-conditioned, the floor to ceiling windows make for wonderful cross ventilation. ONE full bath on FIRST FLOOR (for those with accessibility issues with this "quirk" of an older home, please take note), fully equipped kitchen with Viking stove and Miele dishwasher, formal dining room, parlour with bay window. During the spring and summer, a spacious screened porch is perfect for dining and relaxing, as well as herb and vegetable gardens for the ultimate in locavore harvesting. A charcoal barbecue is available for use as well. Wireless internet (password upon request), Direct TV with HBO. Please view the pictures of the cottage and property - words cannot do it justice!
PLEASE NOTE: Unless you have AT&T, there is no cell service at the house and is spotty in the Berkshires in general. Guests are welcome to make and receive calls on the landline and voicemail password can be given upon request. If you need a house very cool and air conditioned in the summer, or very warm in the winter (like 80 degrees), then this is probably not the house for you. I only accept reservations from people with completed profiles, and there is a three night minimum for the holiday weekends of Memorial Day , July 4th and Labor day.
Vegetable and herb garden, a well stocked kitchen with lots of spices and high quality olive oils and vinegars, as well as other seasonings.
Interaction with Guests
When I rent the house out, I sometimes go away for the weekend, or I stay at my parent's house which has very limited cell service (I provide you with their number). There has never been a catastrophe, but please bear in mind that sometimes I will not be able to get back to you immediately, although I am careful to check my phone when I have guests staying at the house.
Neighbors are very friendly, willing to help a hand or give advice if needed, but not intrusive. It's a place where "time stands still"- indeed, at the general store, you will find pictures of the center of town that look the same except for the size of the trees. Due to some very stringent zoning ordinances, you won't find condos ever cropping up. If you stay here and like Mill River, I can recommend it to any potential home buyer (I have been here 17 years).
- no smoking inside the house
- There is no cell service in the village, but guest may choose to have their calls forwarded to the house, free of charge.
The cottage was a good experience for our family of four. It was close to Butternut ski fields which was the sole purpose of our weekend. It was in a quiet location. The house was clean and warm and enjoyable.
This is the second time I have stayed at Mz. Terrell's Victorian Cottage. Not only is the place clean and cozy, but Mz. Terrell has been accommodating whenever there has been any need to make adjustments to our booking. I will likely seek her and her listing out whenever the next occasion arises.
Jennifer's place was fantastic and in a beautiful setting. We enjoyed the screened in porch and were able to take advantage of the fall weather and have breakfast out there. Jennifer's taste in decorating is wonderful and added warmth to the house. The place was exactly as described and contributed in great part to a wonderful weekend.
The cottage is beautiful, clean and comfortable. We loved the decor. The beds were comfortable and the linens and towels luxurious. The kitchen was well equipped. Contacting Jennifer and arranging our stay was real simple. We will definitely stay there again. The cottage is in a rural area, it is quiet and peaceful. There's a river right across the street and a children's playground next door. It was perfect for our toddler. There is also a cemetery across the street which I forgot about and stumbled into with my dog on his late-night walk. Spooky! (I have an over-active imagination). There was great food nearby. I highly recommend the Old Inn on the Green for a foodie experience ($$$$ and make a reservation) and the Southfield Store is perfect for fresh baked goods, sandwiches, salads and brunch. The cottage is not far from other little towns, parks and hiking trails but it's the kind of cozy place that makes you want to sip your coffee slowly. As mentioned in the description, we did find the second floor to be a bit chilly but Jennifer provided heaters for the bedrooms, as well as electric blankets (it wasn't cold enough for these).
The house was lovely and was clean and organized for our stay. Jennifer made sure to be in touch and notify us of all details. She was very responsive and easy to work with.
This was a perfect retreat in the Berkshires. We enjoyed the lovely kitchen, the veranda for great dinning. The rooms are nicely decorated and tidy, the double bedroom could have a queen, there is a lot of space, but we were fine. We missed some blind curtains in this room, but we are used to sleep in dark, so it is may be not a problem for everybody. Overall we were very satisfied, this house was a good break after days in hotels and motels. The area is very quiet, but not far from the nice villages and festivals..We would definitely stay there again.
Very nice host, jennifer was kind, helpful and accomodating in every way. The house is just perfect, surroundings same. Spacious rooms, cozy victorian style living room and kitchen well stocked. The porch is the topper of the house, together with the garden! Recommended!
