I finished my first journey in Japan yesterday and this is really a wonderful experience! I knew airbnd only in this March and I booked three nights in Nishinomiya and three nights in Kyoto. I print out the map of Hidemi's house and its easy to go there from Nagitsugi Station. Then I got the map to share house and the key from her mailbox. She was working in her part-time job at that time, about 7:15 PM. I met many friendly people those three nights: dear host Hidemi, Phd student Rafael,Japanese student Nami, my いもうと Johanna from Germany, Eric from Italy and a couple from Poland. You know in share house, people come and people go, but I think meeting each other is a kind of destiny and 羁绊kitsuna. I will miss you guys. Thank you Hidemi, for your warm heart and hospitaility. Your cook is delicious! Thanks for your gift and the currency exchange so that I can afford the ￥2550 airport bus :P I really hope to see you again.
Miss Hidemi is indeed kind and helpful.
I did not manage to find her place on the day of my arrival and she promptly met up with me at the nearest landmark.
When I had questions about the local attractions, she was able to answer most of them and provided much needed guidance for me to chart my path for the next few days.
She even called up a local restaurant to try and reserve an evening performance by a geisha for me.
The location is surrounded by convenient shops and decent eateries. The ramen shop recommended by Miss Hidemi is a gem. I had dinner there 3 nights in a row.
Little stone bakery, as recommended by Miss Hidemi is also a great place to get tasty pastries for only 100 yen per pc.
Communication - Throughout my stay there were some miscommunications. Specifically when it came to Check-in and Check-out time. Probably due to the absence of a uniformed communication method e.g. at times we communciated via email and other times we would communicate with each other via the Airbnb messaging feature.
I would not rule out the language barrier as well.
Both parties were not on the same page and this has caused some misunderstandings during my stay.
Nonetheless, everything was resolved at the end.
I read the reviews before deciding to stay with Miss Hidemi. Some of them were accorded home cooked meals and trips to the hot spring. I guess I was wrong to assume that all the guests would be accorded with the same treatment.
Miss Hidemi did however prepared a parting gift made up of local cakes and dumplings for me, which was a nice and thoughtful gesture.
Even though it is still within the city i.e. Kyoto. Bear in mind that it is about 15 minutes walk to the nearest subway. If you are short of time, I would suggest you look for an accomodation situated closer to the subway or in the centre of the city.
Bath Room and Shower -
When the house is occupied with more guests, you might have to queue or wait for your turn to use the facilities.
The shared house only had 1 shower room and 1 toilet. These facilities, including the laundry are all located within the same room and accessed through one door. If someone were to use any one of the facilities, you might have to wait for your turn.
Overall, it was an okay experience for me, reading all the great reviews before my stay probably raised my own expectations a bit too high.
Hidemi is a great host, friendly, very willing to offer help and advice. Definitely the host everyone wants to have. The place is 8-10 minutes walk from metro station. Can be an issue especially if you have some heavy load (Hidemi may be able to give you a ride to metro though). The room is clean and in good condition. You can even choose a bath or a shower. It is well equipped to cook as well. Thankfully I have met some great room mates and have a dinner together. The location is at the Eastern area so you can first "clear" those attraction spots first.
Hidemi was a fantastic host during my stay at her sharehouse.
She made me feel very welcome and provided very useful maps and information.
The sharehouse was easy to locate thanks to Hidemi's instructions and it was very comfortable and clean. The other guests were also very friendly.
Would definitely recommend!
I have no words to describe the amazing experience I had staying at Hidemi ' s share house, she and her husband are great hosts and really nice people. Hidemi is always making sure everything is good, so your stay is more enjoyable. I honestly felt like home, the place is super clean, organized and you has everything you might need to your disposition, and if not(which is rare), she will take care of it. She was really helpful with information about local transportation, places to go or things to do, she offered many options and planed outings,so you can enjoy your stay to the fullest. I'm absolutely pleased and graceful with Hidemi, thanks to her, my experience in Kyoto was the most memorable!!!
