We are offering a very large, clean and comfortable basement room with windows and private entrance on a beautiful tree-lined block in Fort Greene. (We live on the same street where the film director Spike Lee has his studio!) You will not need to see us at all if you choose not to: the room is separate from our living space and your own entrance will allow you to come and go as you please. After a busy day in the city, you can slip back in without disturbing a soul and have a great night’s sleep in your own peaceful oasis. A second door in the room opens onto a flight of wooden stairs that leads up into our yard, a beautiful Japanese-inspired garden that is a corner of tranquility in the hustle and bustle of urban life. You are welcome to sit on the deck and enjoy the morning and evening chorus of red cardinals and blue jays and the occasional woodpecker – as well as the antics of scampering squirrels.

So what does the room offer you? First of all, a very comfortable futon bed that has received rave reviews from all our family and friends who have stayed with us. We cover it in fresh cotton linen and in the winter top it off with a cozy down-filled “doona” (Aussie-speak for quilt) that will send you to sleep immediately. Even insomniacs seem to find sleep in our basement! [Note: the bed is a little lower than a normal bed so if you have any difficulty getting down low this might not be for you.] There is a table and chairs, a very comfortable armchair and plenty of room to put your clothes on a hanging rack and in a set of wire drawers. There is a large wooden chest of drawers full of fresh towels and extra linen, DVD player and a selection of good movies (no TV connection), Wifi connection and an iPod dock. There's also an iron and table-top ironing board if you need to press something fancy before a night out and there is access to laundry facilities in our building - we supply the washing powder. But the best part of all is the bathroom. It is very large and modern with a rain shower and steam facility (great marble bench to lounge on) so you can truly relax after a busy day of sightseeing! We provide toiletries and there’s a hairdryer for your use. There's no kitchen but there's a small fridge, a kettle and mugs with a selection of teas and we always provide cookies and a basket of fruit. The room is well-stocked with guidebooks, maps and magazines on New York and walking cards. You have your own heating control so you can regulate the temperature in your room in the winter while in the summer we supply a large fan and dehumidifier. [Note: the windows have insect screens and are great for getting air into the room but there is no direct view onto the garden. This is a basement room and you need to go up the steps to the garden as you can see in the photo. There is diffused natural light, more so obviously in the summer, but there are plenty of lights and lamps in the room to make it very bright and cozy. And the basement remains pleasantly cool in the sticky summer of New York. This is an amazingly quiet room at the back of the building with no noise from the street whatsoever - you will sleep soundly here! ]

Travelling with children or a friend
The room rate for a single traveler or a couple is $95 per night, minimum two nights stay. If you are travelling with children, we can reconfigure the room to accommodate one or two extra small people on a single or double air bed. The family price is $105 per night. We have many toys and books that we are happy to lend. If you are traveling as two friends together and wish to each have your own bed, we can also reconfigure the room and supply the air mattress. The extra price for this is a flat fee of $95 - the equivalent of a night's stay - per week.

The room is a short walk away from heaps of great cafés and shops. There is a very nice bagel joint around the corner for breakfast and an Aussie-owned café just up the street called Smooch for Australian visitors hankering a decent coffee and some vegemite toast! There is also a café on the corner of our street called Cammerari Bakery which has a good selection of sandwiches, pastries, breakfast items and fresh bread, while next to that a small French café called Paulette's recently opened, also serving breakfast. It’s simple to get to Manhattan from where we are with 12 subway lines in easy walking distance, the nearest five minutes away. There is also a gorgeous park at the end of the street – Fort Greene Park – designed by Olmsted and Vaux (same pair of famous landscape architects that designed Central Park) and popular with joggers and local residents who flock to the wonderful farmers’ market at the corner of the park every Saturday (check out the amazing apples and heirloom tomatoes!) The New York marathon runs along Lafayette Avenue at the end of our street every November and the whole neighborhood turns out to celebrate in a riot of color and sound. BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is a five minute walk from us where you can catch great gigs and plays and movies, while the Brooklyn Flea, the largest flea market in New York, is just a few blocks away. The Barclay Center, home to the Brooklyn Nets and venue for large-scale rock concerts, is also a mere 10 minute walk away.

Fort Greene is a fabulous, vibrant, multi-cultural neighborhood and we invite you to use it as your convenient base to explore Brooklyn and wider New York. We promise that you won’t be disappointed!

  • Very convenient neighborhood and the perfect room for us. Sallie gave us great tips about what to see in the neighborhood and fun things to do. She was friendly, professional and a great host. We would definitely book this room again for a stay in Brooklyn.

  • If you want to visit New York, Fort Greene is the best place to stay! Not only the place is great to stay at, best room, best walk in shower to relax after a long day, metro around the corner, nice shops and lunch/diner facillities, Sally and her husband are so kind and genirous, they will tell you all about Brooklyn and New York and they will you feel at home with them in Fort Greene.
Brooklyn, Fort Greene, is really te best place, the neighbourhood is very safe and also multi cultural. There is a beautiful park just on the end of the street and with a 20 min walk or a 5 min metro, you are at the Brooklyn bridge.
There are really a thousend things a can imagine, dont hastitate to book Fort Greene!

We had an amazing time in NY staying at Fort Greene with Sallie and her lovely family. We felt so much at home!
Next time, we will come back again at Fort Greene, and we'll tell all our friends about this lovely place so they can have such a great time as we did!

  • Sallie is the BEST! We stayed at her room for three nights and it was awesome. She provided us with information on the area and how to get to the subway, downtown etc. It was so nice.
Next time we will be in New York we will definetly be staying at her place again. Thank you, Sallie :)

  • We could not have picked a better place for our visit to New York.
Perfect location, Fort Greene is a great Brooklyn neighborhood, close to everything! Subway lines, bike routes, citi bike rentals, weekend flea markets, shopping, groceries, cafes, restos, bars...
Perfectly cool basement room for a summer stay, after each hot day walking, biking and touring around the boroughs, we could come home to our perfectly cool room and wind down.
Perfect shower for feeling glamorous, the tall rain shower is just the best.
Perfect attention to detail from the hosts! Everything we could have needed was already in the room, a small fridge, an umbrella, a hairdryer, a kettle, maps... and even some fresh flowers.

A very private, calm room with great hosts and anything you could possibly need for a week long stay in New York.

  • Sallie's room is a fantastic 'home from home'. I stayed with my mother for 7 nights and we both found the room really welcoming ( especially important as this was my mum's first visit to New York & the US). The room and bathroom are both spacious, and having our own private access from the main hallway was great, also being able to get up to the Japanese inspired back garden via our own staircase was wonderful for those warm, early spring evenings. The room is so quiet. The fridge and kettle made breakfasts a relaxed affair, yet if we wanted to get extra supplies, there is a wonderful cafe on one corner of the street and a fantastic bagel shop on the other! Fort Greene Park at the end of the street has views over Manhatten, yet the area is a little haven only one subway stop away from Canal Street. I'm already planning my return trip!

  • My husband and I stayed with Sallie in February/March this year as our initial base after our move from Australia. We could not have found a nicer place to stay and nicer people to stay with. The space is all you need, whether you are just on holiday or setting up. In fact, it is larger than most hotels we have stayed at in NYC and it even has an very glam and spacious ensuite. Great position for the subway - a block from the C and G lines and close to the main Barclays station. Definitely a great area in Brooklyn and provides you with some retreat from bustling Manhattan. The house is in a safe, leafy neighbourhood with plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars around. A beautiful park is also at the end of the street. Sallie and her husband were so kind, even advising us of things to see and do in the area. The garden area is so tranquil, but we would have loved to have seen it in all its glory in spring. We would definitely recommend staying here - you will not be disappointed!

  • We had a wonderful stay in Sallie's room. She is a warm and friendly host. The room is clean and comfortable, with lovely touches such as fresh fruit, and a bouquet of flowers to greet us. One reason we chose it is that it has a separate entrance, so we didn't have to worry about disturbing the family if we came back late. We were very pleased by how quiet the room was. The location is great - near the subway, in our favorite neighborhood in Brooklyn. We would certainly stay there again, and hope that it will be available when we return to NY.

  • We loved staying in Brooklyn with Sallie. The flat is beautiful, clean, and very convenient to multiple Subway lines. In addition, the Fort Greene neighborhood is easy to walk and Sallie offered great suggestions for restaurants, coffee, and shopping in the area. We were a little concerned that the futon might not be comfortable, but we slept really well and would stay again with no hesitation!

  • Staying at Sallie's airbnb was a great experience. She was very accommodating especially after having my flight cancelled due to a winter storm. Yet when me and my girlfriend stayed in her cozy little basement, it was warm and hospitable. Central to Brooklyn and within walking distance to atlantic avenue terminal all of New York City is just a subway ride away! Oh and the cookies she has are the best, I just couldnt help myself.

I love travelling and making friends all over the world and have been lucky to live in four amazing cities for extended periods of my life: Rome, Beijing, Sydney and now New York. I enjoy biking and scootering around the streets of our neighborhood, cooking and eating good food, reading, learning to play the ukulele, practicing yoga and volunteering at my son's school. Home is where I lay my hat and right now Brooklyn is home! I revel in the rich cultural life of New York and would love to share with you our hip neighborhood and all the wonderful things there are to do in Fort Greene and beyond. Look forward to hosting you!
