About this listing
Gorgeous 1800sq foot villa with massive deck affording ocean views set in the hills of SJDS. The home sleeps five comfortably in two master en suites and office. Enjoy life in the jungle, solar hot water and dips in the shared infinity pool!
Designed by renowned Architect Matthew Falkner, Casa Suerte serves as an idyllic setting for those looking for a tranquil and certainly unique Nicaraguan destination.
Located hillside in the private ecological reserve and boutique community of Balcones de Majagual, the house features views directly out to beautiful Majagual beach, and it is often easy to spot passing humpback whales from your own 520 square feet private deck which overlooks the serene infinity swimming pool. In addition to whales, you will be sure to encounter an abundance of interesting wildlife, including our own community of placid howler monkeys, which never cease to fascinate and charm guests.
Enjoy evening cocktails on the deck while watching a picture perfect Pacific coast sunset followed by a dinner cooked on the house’s 4-burner Charbroil BBQ. You can even purchase fresh fish and lobsters pulled straight from the sea by local fisherman down at our local beach!
Casa Suerte comprises of cooling polished concrete floors, and beautifully detailed native hardwood features throughout. The house has and has been designed to allow natural airflow throughout constantly, making it a comfortable retreat after a day in the sun at one of the local surf beaches, many of which are in walking distance, or a short drive from the house.
Two generously proportioned bedrooms, each with ensuite, are supplemented with an additional office/library with a double sofa bed, comfortably accommodating a 5th guest. The interior is fitted with a mix of architect-designed furniture, mixed with Nicaraguan antique pieces.
In contrast to it’s natural setting the house is appointed with essential modern services, including a dedicated Wi-Fi service and PC, laptop, plus fully fitted kitchen with extra bar fridge to ensure your drinks are kept cool, and it’s own washer/dyer should you require it. Your stay is made comfortable by the onsite services that provide 24hour security, maid and pool cleaning services. A fluent english and spanish speaking meet and greet is included in the cost of rental.
Located 12km north of lovely San Juan Del Sur guests are strongly recommended to hire a four-wheel drive vehicle which will not only allow access to Casa Suerte but also to many of the unique beaches in the surrounding area. Once out of town all roads are dirt so it’s a great opportunity to enjoy country roads and explore the region
If you are seeking a relaxing and unique experience, in a beautifully appointed home and have a sense of adventure (while enjoying your creature comforts), we invite you Casa Suerte, Balcones de Majagual

One of the best parts of staying at Casa Suerte is the quiet that allows you to enjoy the sounds of the jungle. On days when the breezes are gentle you can hear the ocean crashing. Every day you can sit and enjoy your morning coffee with the parakeets singing and the Mono Congo monkey's hanging in the trees around the house. Fall asleep to the sound of crickets singing outside the house. Unlike many of the homes in and around San Juan Del Sur, Casa Suerte is unique in its setting. Perched on a ridge, the home is located in a private boutique community, containing 11 homes on roughly 100 acres stretching from the jungle to the ocean. There is enough space between homes to enjoy complete privacy without feeling alone or isolated. The lack of light pollution allows you to swim in the pool on clear nights by moonlight, something not to be missed. We provide 24 hour on site security, cleaning service and management without being intrusive. We are also an ecologic conscious community. What does this mean? We do not believe in spraying heavy pesticides like local hotels do to control bugs, what this does mean is you may encounter a few critters in and around the house, but we are not poisoning the food chain from the bottom up. All of our actions have far reaching consequences, and we want monkeys and parrots to visit the home. We heat our water with solar heat (and there is no lack of that!) and all our furniture and wood in the home is reclaimed fallen hardwoods, ethically sourced in north east Nicaragua.
There is no public transport
Guests are required to have their own 4 x 4 vehicle to stay at Casa Suete which we can assist with booking.

Laura and Joel were so so great. The lead up to our trip was hectic as we rented four homes in the Balcones neighborhood for our wedding party who was staying with us. They were flying in from all over the world and arriving in various forms of transit at different times, but we felt like we had everything mapped out with our great hosts' help.
I probably sent Laura 25 emails in the months/weeks ahead of our trip and she never failed to respond immediately. A+ service!
We liked the neighborhood so much we ended up doing a standing ceremony at the front gate in front of one of the stunning banyan trees.
If you're looking seriously at homes in this neighborhood, you should already know that you're looking for an adventure. Getting there and coordinating communication were never easy but that's more a function of Nicaragua's developing infrastructure.
The only way to make this place better is to improve the road up to the houses. Everything else about the homes was stunning.
The house was amazing the view was beautiful the pictures don't do the home justice. Nicole from Remax was very helpful, took us shopping helped with transportation. Homeowner were very prompt at responding to my emails and very helpful with all questions I had. The only negatives of the home was that it was a 10 minute drive to the closest beach if you are surfer the beach was amazing if not it didn't have much shopping or restaurants and a 30 minute drive to town which was as described. I was not expecting so many bugs I expected mosquitoes but not spiders, Beatles, months, and scorpions. You cannot be out on the amazing deck at nighttime because of all the bugs. I believe it was due to the fact that your way up in the canopies because the town did not have so many bugs.
Thank you so much for the kind words Jessica we appreciate them- and glad to hear the home is as advertised in drive times etc. We are sorry you were surprised by bugs- however this is Central American and like the saying goes "like moths to a flame" so sitting outside at night with the light on means you will attract moths, and flying critters. While we have scorpions in the area (the same kind as Texas etc) we do not have mosquitos which are disease carriers. Being conscious of our surroundings and the environment we do not spray for bugs- we love our birds and monkeys and if that means moths and ants the odd spider - we are happy to accept this! Hope to see you back soon!
This house was amazing!!!!The whole home was spotless, and inviting. The open floor plan and sliding walls left the house cool and breezy the entire time. The hot water was a really nice and unexpected addition. The views from the deck and the pool were beautiful and we grew very close to our howler monkey friends. The management company was informative and efficient and explained everything we needed to know, including where to buy foodstuffs. I hope to return here again soon
We had a fantastic time in Nicaragua and at Casa Suerte. The house itself is out of this world - perched on a hill overlooking the ocean and surrounded by nature and wildlife. It is beautifully constructed and airy, and most importantly very quiet which we New Yorkers highly value!... The house is just as described in terms of layout and appliances (we also had a TV with tons of movies on demand - comes in handy in the evening as there is not much to do once it gets dark), yet you have to be there in person to really understand the beauty of this place. Our best moments were gazing at the stars every night from our private deck, and observing monkeys while enjoying breakfast every morning. Unforgettable.
Laura and her team were fantastic and extremely responsive. They assisted us with car reservations, tour arrangements, and other house related requests always responding in a timely manner. They even sent a check list and travel tips a week or so before our arrival which I thought was very helpful. Upon our arrival we were greeted by an appointed agent in SJDS who showed us around the town before taking us to the house. She was American, living in Nica and so was speaking perfect English. The check in went very smoothly. My call outs overall are the following: agent did not need to walk us through the grocery store to specifically point out US imported food such as Cheetos and canned salsa dip... Not only can I easily figure this out myself, I have no desire to purchase these items while vacationing in nature and knowing I can eat fresh fish every day! The house does not come equipped with basic items such as soap in the shower or coffee. You need to plan for this and make sure you stock up before getting to the house. Lastly, the house is a good 25min drive out of SJDS (one way) on a dirt road (on a few occasions after becoming familiar with the road we were able to make it in 18min). I think that's a very important point for whoever is looking for convenience and proximity, or thinking about coming with children (probably not the best place to stay with kids). Make sure you use the map the first time on your own in order not to get lost. There is hardly any signage and it's easy to get lost especially at night. Also the dirt road is A LEGIT dirt road, ie: you need a 4W drive on LOW and your average speed will be 10mph. The road is pretty scary the first time so be prepared for that. But hey, in our opinion this was a small price to pay for such a beautiful place and if you are able to look past these inconveniences you will appreciate the magic of this house! We are looking forward to being back next year :)
Thank you for your detailed review Camlile- we really appreciate it and are so glad to hear you loved the house- it really is a special will work to improve our services where we can. I wonder if Nicole who is a few months pregnant simply had a Cheeto or junk food craving that day?! I don't think it was intended in any other way! As for the home being suitable for children we have been renting to families with children for over five years with no issues - in fact this is a great home for families and they've been enjoying it greatly.
When we arrived we were greeted with smiles from Nicole and provided maps and all instructions for use of the home. On top of that all of our questions about SJDS and the surrounding neighborhood (culture, food, safety, etc) were thoroughly answered.
This is truly a paradise. While rustic in some respects all amenities are tip top. There was ample room on the decks for morning yoga and large meals with guests. The cool breeze kept the house at a comfortable temperature throughout the day and night. The 4x4 requirement is no joke but very much part of the fun. We would love to share this space again the next time we are in this part of the world.
This was our 2nd house of 2 we stayed at owned by Laura and Joel... Both were amazing in their own unique ways.
Upon arriving, we were walked through where to buy groceries, accompanied to the house, given info about the area, etc. Although sort of hard to get to in terms of road quality (definitely need a 4x4 vehicle), this place was exactly as it was advertised! No detail forgotten, super clean, relaxing, beautiful. 24 hour security guards made us feel very safe also. Loved our stay and can't wait to return. Couldn't have asked for a better experience! Thank you!!
The Property Management team (both local and afar) consisting of Jeremy and his crew who were onsite, and Laura who stayed in constant contact, made us feel very welcome and important. This was our first trip to Nicaragua. My husband, me, and my two sons 16 and 11 are not travel novices by any means but we were not totally certain what to expect. The house in pictures looks beautiful and I am happy to say is beautiful in person. Very spare, modern, with a Japanese feel, polished concrete floors, details such as wood louvres that have a dual purpose to providing breeze direction and visual privacy. I appreciate the care taken in designing these mountain top homes. WE had rather unfortunate timing in that we arrived exactly as the region suffered from some ferocious windstorms such that I've never experienced in my life! Because the homes consist of screens throughout without any glazing, the wind streams throughout the home unabated. Our first night there we lost power early in the evening (due to the crazy wind) and realized straight away that the back up battery was out of service so we were in complete darkness. We decided to retire early and hope that the power would come back on quickly. Unfortunately the power did not come back until late afternoon the following day. By the morning I realized that our perishables would need to be thrown out. We were not sure what was going to happen at this point and my husband and I were seriously starting to think we might need to find other accommodation. It was at that exact point that Jeremy, the Property Mgr, knocked on our door and helped to save the day. He was completely understanding, accommodating, and apologetic. He made sure to communicate so we always knew what was going on. Luckily I have an unlocked phone so was able to maintain email and text with him. He facilitated our move to another home within the same complex (House #1) very quickly. House #1 was lovely. Some similarities in design for sure however a little bit older and more rustic. We enjoyed staying there and ended up staying for 4 nights our of the 12 we had booked. So we felt like we had two vacations! On moving back into our original house, once the new battery was installed, Jeremy ensured that his crew took care of all the logistics of the move so that we would not have to worry about anything except for packing our things. The crew even put away our food for us!
All in all, the most important thing to me is how our troubles were dealt with. The windstorm and resultant power outage were nobody's fault but a different response could have ruined our vacation completely. We would definitely go back. We had a lovely vacation and were able to explore all the local beaches and the main town, San Juan del Sur. Thanks for everything.
Susan- equal accalades are due to you and your family for being so willing (and understanding) to work with us in this unfortunate situation! You were right- the winds were simply unbelievable in Nicaragua, a total weather anomaly! We were more than happy to work to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible- that is what our team does and we are glad we achieved the desired result! We honestly hope to see you all back here soon- Happy Travels

About the Host, Laura (And Joel)
We are just two travel loving people who fell in love with the country of Nicaragua and ended up buying our dream home! While we try and spend as much time there as possible, occasionally, we do have to work- and we do want to keep discovering this amazing planet. While we are doing this, we are happy to offer homes in our community to others to enjoy and discover this truly amazing country! San Juan del Sur Nicaragua is the place to come for travellers who are looking for surf, sunshine and a little adventure, and we try our best to make our home a little piece of luxury to come and relax in between all that fun! Through renting our own personal home Casa Selva- I fell into assisting my amazing neighbours in Balcones de Majagual with renting their homes- the rest they say is history. You couldn't pick a better spot in Nicaragua- and you couldn't pick better guests than myself and my husband Joel!
