Location, location, location!

My lovely home is set in the rice paddies of Penestanan, our artist's village on the edge of Ubud that has no car access or car sounds (but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and birds) and still just minutes away from the centre of Ubud.
You can practice yoga overlooking the rice field in the large bedroom that opens up onto a balcony.

Penestanan now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, two 5-star restaurants, raw food restaurant, fresh organic juice bar, Japanese health food, authentic Balinese and Javanese warungs (restaurants), several cafe's and a bakery so you don't even have to go to Ubud centre, which is only 15 minutes walk anyway.

It's a perfect location to make day trips to various temples, Batur Volcano, rice terraces, woodcarvers village, museums and galleries.

My friendly housekeeper will come every morning and make you a delicious breakfast. She will also make the bed and clean the house daily. She is a treasure trove of local information and can help arrange a car and driver to take you sightseeing, and/or car or motorbike rental.

There is a swimming pool at a small quaint hotel down the path that can be used for a small daily charge.

Guest access

The entire house.
This is an authentic, lived in house, not a "made for Airbnb" guest house.
There is a lovely swimming pool in a gorgeous garden setting - just down the path at Melati Cottages which can be used for a very small fee of about $2 a day. You can have lunch while you're by the pool or at a pool-side restaurant.

Interaction with guests

The housekeeper comes every morning (except Sundays and religious holidays) to clean the house and prepare breakfast (you will purchase your own food - there is a supermarket within 15 min walk through the rice paddies.)

The neighborhood

Penestanan is one of the most friendly and beautiful neighbourhoods of Ubud. I love all the great cafes and restaurants, nearby yoga studios, spas, and art galleries.

What's around:

There are many great restaurants just across the rice paddy – Lala Lily and Ibu Putu Warung, Made’s Warung down the path from Lala Lily. Ubud Haven next door. Yellow Flower Café (along the path on the other side of the big stairs- follow the signs to Indo-French Bungalow) has delicious café latté and organic food. Vespa Cafe on the other side of the river. All are within 5 minutes walk!

If you turn right on the path (in the direction of Melati Cottages) – the path ends on Penestanan Road – you will find a very popular Alchemy (raw food restaurant), a Japanese health food warung, Warung Mendez – delicious Javanese food, Sharaswati – vegetarian Indian food, Kue Bakery and Café, Wayan Coconut has amazing fresh juices, Sari Organic is famous for their delicious organic food – all great options. Plus other local warungs with delicious Balinese food. Too many to list them all!

Down the big stairs turn right to find highly acclaimed Bridges Restaurant and Rondji Restaurant at Antonio Blanco. On the other side of the old bridge the famous Murni’s Warung has a great bar full of antique Indonesian art treasures.

You can order take out at many of them if you prefer to eat at home. Some will even deliver! (Made’s Warung). You can also order pizza from Pizza Bagus and they'll bring it to the house.

Follow the path past Yellow Flower Café all the way to Bintang Supermarket (about 10 min walk). Or walk down the Tjampuan Steps to the main road and turn left. Either way it’s about 10 minutes.

There are several wonderful spas in the neighbourhood. Eve Spa is just down the path. You can also arrange to have a masseur(or masseuse) come to the house. We have a massage table in house.

Getting around

Local taxi stand is at the end of the path, but we are within walking distance to Ubud centre.
There is an 'uber-like' app that you can download for a motorcycle taxi service. It's called Go-Jek.
We can arrange a car rental, motorbike rental or a car and driver for daytrips around Bali. Almost anything of interest is within a couple of hours drive. Most within one hour: Famous temples, volcanoes, Bird Park, Elephant Safari, White Water Kayaking, beaches and more.

Other things to note

We have a yoga mat, yoga blocks, and hand weights for your use. The hardwood floor upstairs is perfect for yoga practice, with the wonderful view of the greenery of rice paddies.
We have a massage table and will even give you a number for an amazing masseurs who can come to the house..

We are amongst the rice paddies, 5 minute walk from the main road. There is no direct car access. There are two ways to the main road - one to the Penestanan Road and all the cafes, restaurants and spas plus some cool little shops . The other way is to the main Ubud Road via the famous Tjampuan Steps - but involves a long flight of stone steps. The stairs and the paths leading to the house from the roads are lit with street lamps, but they are not always on***
*** The street lights are manually turned on by the first person to pass by at dusk. If it's you - just flick the switch on the pole. You can't miss it.

1. How far are the shops and restaurants?
Before you book that dream vacation home - make sure it is not many kilometers away from shops and restaurants.
We are in a perfect location - quiet and serene, yet few minutes walk to about 16 restaurants, a supermarket and many shops and cafes.

2. Is it safe? For single women travellers?
Yes and yes.
We have single female guests regularly. Too many to count. Please see the reviews - a lot of them are from female guests traveling alone.
That said, unfortunately, Bali, despite being known as The Island Of The Gods, has its share of property crime. It’s insignificant compared to most other tourist destinations, nonetheless, it exists and in order to protect yourself, you must be aware of it.
Once in a while we hear of a purse snatching, house break-in, hotel room theft, and wallets and valuables being stolen from purses left unattended. We have never had a break in and the house is surrounded by a wall with a locked gate.
Our neighbourhood has it's own security night patrol ran by the village council.

3. Would we need our own car or just use cabs?
A. You can walk from my house to the centre of town in 15 minutes. There are fabulous restaurants, museums and art galleries within 5 minute walk. Local taxi service is available at two locations short walk from the house.
If you want to make trips around the island it’s best to get a car and driver, the cost is very reasonable around US $45 per day. If you want to rent a car we can recommend a reasonable and reliable car and motorbike rental.

4. Is there a swimming pool?
A. We don't have a swimming pool.
However hotels in the area charge a small fee for non-guests’ use of their pool.
The closest one is Melati Cottages, just 250 m down the path, with gorgeous gardens and a restaurant. You can pay daily (about $2) or negotiate a better rate for your entire stay.

5. Is it quiet?
A. Yes. We are in the middle of rice paddies, away from any
road noise. You will hear birds, frogs, crickets, roosters and geckos, and
occasionally humans walking by. If you like to sleep in - you may want to bring
earplugs, as the birds start early in the morning..

6. Can I rent it long term for 1 or 2 years?
A. Unfortunately long term is not possible. Maximum rental is 6 months, depending on other bookings and my own use of the house.

7. Can we cook our own meals?
A. Yes, the kitchen comes with fridge, small gas stove, pots and pans, dishes and utensils. There is a fully stocked supermarket within 10 minutes walk. There are many wonderful little local restaurants that will deliver full meals to the house (they're within 5 minutes walk from the house). There is also a pizza delivery service - Pizza Bagus (and their pizza is delicious).

Veronica's place is very spacious and beautifully decorated. The marble floors and modern fans help to keep the house nice and cool. The bed is comfortable and I enjoyed being serenaded to sleep by the sounds of the rice fields. Like many homes in Bali, this is an open-air design and it is not possible to keep every little critter out - so if you are someone that is scared of ants, geckos, etc. this would not be the place for you. The location is perfect to explore Penestanan and it a few minutes walk from Yellow Flower in one direction and Alchemy in the other (both amazing restaurants). Wayan, the housekeeper, is lovely and although I didn't see her much during my stay I felt looked after knowing she was only a phone call away. The internet connection was fast and I didn't experience any problems with the connections, even during some pretty big storms. I felt very safe and at peace during my stay at Veronica's.

We had a lovely stay, the place is even nicer than in the photos! Pros- Beautiful location, tucked away among rice fields and other homes. The worlds cutest dog EVER lives on the property. Walking distance from many nice places to eat. Wayan is a Dear and very eager to please. Beautiful breezy home, such a nice place to relax. Cons- The neighborhood has many, many roosters! They make a lot of noise all through the night, not just early in the morning. Also many noisy geckos, frogs and dogs. Because there is no air con the house is needs to be kept open to keep cool. If you like that sort of thing then it is the perfect place to stay. If you are a light sleeper, this is definitely not the place for you! The toilet is down stairs and there is no hand rail on the stairs so you need to be very careful when going down at night. It is about a 25 min walk into Ubud so not really in the heart of things if that is what you want. You will need to buy your own water and toilet paper. Overall, happy with our stay here!

We ended up only stay two nights of the five we booked. The wifi didn't work at all, even after contacting the ISP. There were also rats in the apartment - we saw one on the kitchen counter and later one in the bathroom. The villa was otherwise very nice and in a convenient location. Victoria and Wayan were also very nice and understanding.

Response from Yan:
AN UPDATE: Wi-Fi is not only fixed - it's upgraded to fiber optic and now works really well. Yay! We also had a pest control company take care of the wildlife. Being so close to the rice paddies - means seasonal battle with rats. When the rice is grown enough to feed them, there is no problem. After the harvest, when new rice is planted they look for food elsewhere i.e. in human habitats. It helps to make sure all the food including leftovers and crumbs is not accessible. Peace and love

We (my partner and I) arrived later in the evening so was at first difficult to find Veronicas place however once we carefully read her directions it was very easy and fast to get to from Alchemy. Make sure to bring a torch or head lamp even though there are some lamps along the path. Penestanan is a beautiful and peaceful area surrounded by delicious eateries, scenic walks through the rice paddies and yoga. It is not too far from Ubud centre, we had a scooter and only took about 10 mins depending on where you wanted to go. Our fave restaurant nearby was Warung mendez which served amazing Javanese food. We saw reviews saying to bring own toilet paper and soap, so we came prepared however there was already a roll and a bar in the bathroom which was nice. There was also a bit of water left from the water cooler which was handy also. The property itself is like the photos, it is quite rustic however is tidy enough. Veronica's library was really cool and has a great collection. The highlight of our stay was Wayan who made us breakfast (just tell her what you would like and money) and talked to us about Bali and any questions. She is warm and friendly and made us feel very welcome. Thank you again to Yan and Veronica for having us.

We had a great time staying here. House is located in very private location with 5 mins walk to great restaurants and yoga places. 5 mins bike ride to Ubud center. You get a lot for what you pay. Highly recommended.

Veronica's place was fantastic to stay at. The privacy was perfect for rest and relaxation. The scenery was staggeringly beautiful. The local breakfasts from Wayan were delicious and the conversations with her were a delight. The location was easy enough to reach, though the stairs tired out my companion rather quickly. To top it all off, though Veronica wasn't around physically, she was great with communication via messaging and went above and beyond in recommending things. Her partnership with locals was seamless for airport pickup, checking in, cleaning up, and breakfast. Highly recommended.

I just fell in love with this beautiful house at first sight on the website - and I didn´t get disappointed. This fabulous little villa is located in a very convenient area in Penestanan, the famous artist´s village very close (20 min walk) to Ubud, but providing the calmness and peacefulness I was looking for (stayed in same area last time). Just a few minutes walk to Intuitive Flow Yoga, Yellow Flower, Alchemy, Sari and other famous restaurants serving delicious organic food. The house in it self is a true pearl, with a lot of space in the lounge/kitchen downstairs and also a lovely spacious bedroom upstairs and an awesome balcony with a great rice paddy view where I spent many sunset evenings. I also slept as a baby in the very comfy bed - enjoying the nightly sounds of nature; frogs, geckos, roosters which all are parts of the balinese beauty. Last but definitely not the least, what really made this stay so extraordinary was Wayan, the housekeeper who comes every morning (flexible in time) to clean the house - and make the most delicious balinese breakfast you can imagine. She is really a true treasure, so nice, warmhearted and helpful, speaks excellent english and can tell you whatever you need to know about Bali. Such an exclusive feeling sitting on the porch in the morning (after yoga/meditation) and being served those lovely balinese banana dumplings, blackrice/grated coconut/palm sugar dish etc with mixed fresh fruits and strong, black bali coffee. Must say all picture mirror the reality very well. The only thing that might have disappointed me a bit was that the lotus flower pond was dried out (because of the dry season). All my contacts with Yan has also been very nice and smooth; always quick and obliging replies. In conclusion, I would warmly recommend a stay in this very cosy and fab villa. And would gladly return here very soon. Thank you & Namaste, Agneta
