Location, location, location!

My lovely home is set in the rice paddies of Penestanan, our artist's village on the edge of Ubud that has no car access or car sounds (but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and birds) and still just minutes away from the centre of Ubud.
You can practice yoga overlooking the rice field in the large bedroom that opens up onto a balcony.

Penestanan now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, two 5-star restaurants, raw food restaurant, fresh organic juice bar, Japanese health food, authentic Balinese and Javanese warungs (restaurants), several cafe's and a bakery so you don't even have to go to Ubud centre, which is only 15 minutes walk anyway.

It's a perfect location to make day trips to various temples, Batur Volcano, rice terraces, woodcarvers village, museums and galleries.

My friendly housekeeper will come every morning and make you a delicious breakfast. She will also make the bed and clean the house daily. She is a treasure trove of local information and can help arrange a car and driver to take you sightseeing, and/or car or motorbike rental.

There is a swimming pool at a small quaint hotel down the path that can be used for a small daily charge.

Guest access

The entire house.
This is an authentic, lived in house, not a "made for Airbnb" guest house.
There is a lovely swimming pool in a gorgeous garden setting - just down the path at Melati Cottages which can be used for a very small fee of about $2 a day. You can have lunch while you're by the pool or at a pool-side restaurant.

Interaction with guests

The housekeeper comes every morning (except Sundays and religious holidays) to clean the house and prepare breakfast (you will purchase your own food - there is a supermarket within 15 min walk through the rice paddies.)

Other things to note

We have a yoga mat, yoga blocks, and hand weights for your use. The hardwood floor upstairs is perfect for yoga practice, with the wonderful view of the greenery of rice paddies.
We have a massage table and will even give you a number for an amazing masseurs who can come to the house..

We are amongst the rice paddies, 5 minute walk from the main road. There is no direct car access. There are two ways to the main road - one to the Penestanan Road and all the cafes, restaurants and spas plus some cool little shops . The other way is to the main Ubud Road via the famous Tjampuan Steps - but involves a long flight of stone steps. The stairs and the paths leading to the house from the roads are lit with street lamps, but they are not always on***
*** The street lights are manually turned on by the first person to pass by at dusk. If it's you - just flick the switch on the pole. You can't miss it.

1. How far are the shops and restaurants?
Before you book that dream vacation home - make sure it is not many kilometers away from shops and restaurants.
We are in a perfect location - quiet and serene, yet few minutes walk to about 16 restaurants, a supermarket and many shops and cafes.

2. Is it safe? For single women travellers?
Yes and yes.
We have single female guests regularly. Too many to count. Please see the reviews - a lot of them are from female guests traveling alone.
That said, unfortunately, Bali, despite being known as The Island Of The Gods, has its share of property crime. It’s insignificant compared to most other tourist destinations, nonetheless, it exists and in order to protect yourself, you must be aware of it.
Once in a while we hear of a purse snatching, house break-in, hotel room theft, and wallets and valuables being stolen from purses left unattended. We have never had a break in and the house is surrounded by a wall with a locked gate.
Our neighbourhood has it's own security night patrol ran by the village council.

3. Would we need our own car or just use cabs?
A. You can walk from my house to the centre of town in 15 minutes. There are fabulous restaurants, museums and art galleries within 5 minute walk. Local taxi service is available at two locations short walk from the house.
If you want to make trips around the island it’s best to get a car and driver, the cost is very reasonable around US $45 per day. If you want to rent a car we can recommend a reasonable and reliable car and motorbike rental.

4. Is there a swimming pool?
A. We don't have a swimming pool.
However hotels in the area charge a small fee for non-guests’ use of their pool.
The closest one is Melati Cottages, just 250 m down the path, with gorgeous gardens and a restaurant. You can pay daily (about $2) or negotiate a better rate for your entire stay.

5. Is it quiet?
A. Yes. We are in the middle of rice paddies, away from any
road noise. You will hear birds, frogs, crickets, roosters and geckos, and
occasionally humans walking by. If you like to sleep in - you may want to bring
earplugs, as the birds start early in the morning..

6. Can I rent it long term for 1 or 2 years?
A. Unfortunately long term is not possible. Maximum rental is 6 months, depending on other bookings and my own use of the house.

7. Can we cook our own meals?
A. Yes, the kitchen comes with fridge, small gas stove, pots and pans, dishes and utensils. There is a fully stocked supermarket within 10 minutes walk. There are many wonderful little local restaurants that will deliver full meals to the house (they're within 5 minutes walk from the house). There is also a pizza delivery service - Pizza Bagus (and their pizza is delicious).

This place is absolutely incredible! Wayan is so sweet and kind, and her breakfast is AMAZING! I know it sounds like a hype, but you'll understand when you try it. I would 100% come back here during my next trip to Bali!

What a gem of a place! The location is phenomenal- quiet and secluded, but just minutes away from the bustle of Ubud and fantastic restaurants, museums and yoga classes. The house has wonderful amenities and was clean and cozy. Conversations with Wayan over delicious breakfast were especially fantastic, and she helped us with ideas for day trips and organizing a driver when needed. My husband and I were well taken care of, and felt happily at home.

This house is great. The location is just far enough removed from the hustle of Ubud but still reachable with a short walk. There are amazing restaurants close the house and its nice to experience a bit more of the local culture than at a resort. The house is in the rice fields like the description says so you do experience a bit of nature (lizards, geckos, bugs) but once you're in the mosquito netted bed you'll sleep great. If you are looking to explore the area a bit or even the entire Island Sena, who's lives in the house just behind this one, is a great taxi driver. He's very kind and has many good ideas of places to see. I highly recommend this house and Sena. Wayan's breakfast were very tasty and the conversation was even better.

Our favorite place to stay during our three month trip to Bali. Gorgeous home hidden among the rice fields and banana trees. Almost felt like you were 'glamling' since the home was open air (no a/c) and many creature noises during the evenings -- and we loved it. Would definitely stay again.

Veronica's place is very spacious and beautifully decorated. The marble floors and modern fans help to keep the house nice and cool. The bed is comfortable and I enjoyed being serenaded to sleep by the sounds of the rice fields. Like many homes in Bali, this is an open-air design and it is not possible to keep every little critter out - so if you are someone that is scared of ants, geckos, etc. this would not be the place for you. The location is perfect to explore Penestanan and it a few minutes walk from Yellow Flower in one direction and Alchemy in the other (both amazing restaurants). Wayan, the housekeeper, is lovely and although I didn't see her much during my stay I felt looked after knowing she was only a phone call away. The internet connection was fast and I didn't experience any problems with the connections, even during some pretty big storms. I felt very safe and at peace during my stay at Veronica's.

We ended up only stay two nights of the five we booked. The wifi didn't work at all, even after contacting the ISP. There were also rats in the apartment - we saw one on the kitchen counter and later one in the bathroom. The villa was otherwise very nice and in a convenient location. Victoria and Wayan were also very nice and understanding.

AN UPDATE: Wi-Fi is not only fixed - it's upgraded to fiber optic and now works really well. Yay! We also had a pest control company take care of the wildlife. Being so close to the rice paddies - means seasonal battle with rats. When the rice is grown enough to feed them, there is no problem. After the harvest, when new rice is planted they look for food elsewhere i.e. in human habitats. It helps to make sure all the food including leftovers and crumbs is not accessible. Peace and love

Veronica's place was fantastic to stay at. The privacy was perfect for rest and relaxation. The scenery was staggeringly beautiful. The local breakfasts from Wayan were delicious and the conversations with her were a delight. The location was easy enough to reach, though the stairs tired out my companion rather quickly. To top it all off, though Veronica wasn't around physically, she was great with communication via messaging and went above and beyond in recommending things. Her partnership with locals was seamless for airport pickup, checking in, cleaning up, and breakfast. Highly recommended.
