My lovely home is set in the rice paddies of Penestanan, our artist's village on the edge of Ubud that has no car access or car sounds (but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and birds) and still just minutes away from the centre of Ubud.
You can practice yoga overlooking the rice field in the large bedroom that opens up onto a balcony.
Penestanan now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, two 5-star restaurants, funky Round Bar, raw food restaurant, fresh organic juice bar, Japanese health food, two cafe's and a bakery so you don't even have to go to Ubud, which is only 15 minutes walk anyway.
It's a perfect location to make day trips to various temples, Batur Volcano, rice terraces, woodcarvers village, museums and galleries.
My friendly housekeeper will come every morning and make you a delicious breakfast. She will also make the bed and clean the house daily. She is a treasure trove of local information and can help arrange a car and driver to take you sightseeing, and/or car or motorbike rental.
There is a swimming pool at a small quaint hotel down the path that can be used for a small daily charge.
The entire house.
Interaction with Guests
My housekeeper comes every morning (except Sundays and religious holidays) to clean the house and prepare breakfast (you will purchase your own food - there is a supermarket within 15 min walk through the rice paddies.)
Penestanan is one of the most friendly and beautiful neighbourhoods of Ubud. I love all the great cafes and restaurants, nearby yoga studios, spas, and art galleries.
RESTAURANTS and CAFEs
There are many great restaurants just across the rice paddy – Lala Lily and Ibu Putu Warung, Made’s Warung down the path from Lala Lily. Yellow Flower Café (along the path on the other side of the big stairs- follow the signs to Indo-French Bungalow) has delicious café latté and healthy food. All are within 5 minutes walk!
If you turn right on the path (in the direction of Melati Cottages) – the path ends on Penestanan Road – you will find Alchemy (raw food restaurant), a Japanese health food warung, Warung Mendez – delicious Javanese food, Sharaswati – vegetarian Indian food, Kue Bakery and Café, Wayan Coconut has amazing fresh juices, Sari Organic is famous for their delicious organic food – all great options.
Down the big stairs turn right to find highly acclaimed Bridges Restaurant and Rondji Restaurant at Antonio Blanco. On the other side of the old bridge the famous Murni’s Warung has a great bar full of antique Indonesian art treasures.
You can order take out at many of them if you prefer to eat at home. Some will even deliver! (Made’s Warung)
Follow the path past Yellow Flower Café all the way to Bintang Supermarket (about 10 min walk). Or walk down the Tjampuan Steps to the main road and turn left. Either way it’s about 10 minutes.
SPAS and YOGA
There are several wonderful spas in the neighbourhood. Eve Spa is just down the path. You can also arrange to have a masseur(or masseuse) come to the house. We have a massage table in house.
Local taxi stand is at the end of the path, but we are within walking distance to Ubud centre.
There is an 'uber-like' app that you can download for a motorcycle taxi service. It's called Go-Jek. Also Uber is in Bali now.
We can arrange a car rental, motorbike rental or a car and driver for daytrips around Bali. Almost anything of interest is within a couple of hours drive. Most less than that: Famous temples, volcanoes, Bird Park, Elephant Safari, White Water Kayaking, beaches and more.
Other Things to Note
We have a yoga mat, yoga blocks, and hand weights for your use. The hardwood floor upstairs is perfect for yoga practice, with the wonderful view of the greenery of rice paddies.
We have a massage table and will even give you a number for an amazing masseur who can come to the house..
We are amongst the rice paddies, 5 to 10 minute walk from the road. There is no direct car access. There are two ways to the main road - one to the Penestanan Road and all the cafes, restaurants and spas plus some cool little shops - that's a 10 minute walk. The other one is to the main Ubud Road via the famous Tjampuan Steps - that one is 5 minutes to the road, but involves a long flight of steps. (Down towards the Main Road, up from the road to the house). The stairs and the paths leading to the house from the roads are lit with street lamps, but they are not always on, so please bring a flashlight or use your phone light when you come home at night. It can get pretty dark on moonless nights.
Please don't smoke in the house, but it's ok to smoke on the porch if you like. Also be very careful with candles and incense, especially upstairs, which has hardwood floors and bamboo roofing.
Villa was in a good location for Ubud centre and the local supermarket. Nicely presented but rather noisy due ducks, cockerel's and frogs! Facilities were OK but it would have been nice to have met the host!
The house is in a Great location. I enjoyed the spa and restaurants near by. However, the house was not as pictured and I recommend that the photos on Air bnb are updated to reflect the current condition of the house to avoid disappointment from future guests. I was truly looking forward to relaxing in the hammock, the pond, out door eating terrace, etc. For women travelers, please note the house is located 10 minutes from the main road and the walk is unlit and very dark if coming in after sunset.
Yan's house is replete with rustic Balinese charm! It is situated in a local community in a family compound, which really enhanced the authentic feel of the Bali experience. It is a simple but charming 'eat pray love' spot for a couple, well away from the noisy main roads of Ubud. It is in very close walking distance to some fantastic places to eat, including Yellow Flower Cafe, Alchemy and other local warungs. The bathroom is really large. Wayan the housekeeper is very friendly and helpful, and very charming.
The house is open air, making it well ventilated, and visiting in July was a good time to visit temperature-wise. Note that there are roosters nearby so earplugs are very much recommended as they get started early! We found there were a couple of mosquitos around in July but it was manageable.
A lovely house in the hills amongst the rice fields. We were met at the airport and helped with our luggage to get to the house. There are some really good restaurants very close by and some lovely walks straight from the house. The family were welcoming and very helpful. The house is in a quiet location but not far from Ubud palace.
Perfect location just out of the main centre of Ubud but access to everything. Very quiet and the housekeeper is a sweetie. Home is quite the eat, pray love experience if that is what you are looking for and good for longer stays.
We had a wonderful time in the villa of Veronica/ Yan! It is so light and catches the breeze, a 'good air' place. We were there on a yoga retreat being held at Santa putra down the road and was the perfect location for visiting our regular Penestanen haunts! Sitting on the upstairs verandah, watching the cheeky ducks in the paddies next door was very precious! Veronica is lovely and although we didnt see much of Wayan because we were off early, she did a wonderful job! Would definitely stay there again if I had the chance!
