Hundred-year-old Arts and Crafts style home in the most ethnically diverse neighborhood in the entire United States offers a comfortable stay for business, tourist or hospital visitor — all with a little touch of Africa.

The space
Due to the worldwide pandemic and this being a shared space, please note the minimum stay has been lengthened, please do not book if you are sick or have been recently exposed to Covid19.

Visitors will enjoy a private room (a little better than a tented camp in Maasai Mara) with a full-sized bed and a shared bathroom. There are several common spaces to sit and relax, including two sitting areas on the main floor, dining room, and another sitting area that doubles as overflow guest room on the second floor.

In the summer, this stucco house stays pretty cool so we don’t have central air conditioning, but fans are available for those few times it warms up in the hot months. (We have a small window unit in the Urban Safari room for the super hot days.) In winter we have radiator heat with the bedroom level always staying plenty warm. The house is decorated with many African works of art that traveled back with me after I lived in East Africa. I also have a few collected antiques that work well with the handsome woodwork in the house. So it’s a quiet, peaceful place in a busy urban neighborhood.

Where you’ll be

Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States

South Minneapolis is home to significant populations of Hmong, Latino, Native American, African American, Africans and Caucasian Americans, making Phillips the most colorful neighborhood in the US. A real urban safari will include a trip to Midtown Global Market for a meal, about an 10-12 minute walk from here - you can enjoy tastes from all over the world in one diverse food court. If that’s not enough, the famous Eat Street is one mile down the road.

If you hope to see some sights or do some shopping we are about a 15 minute walk to either one of two light rail stations, about a mile from the new Vikings stadium and any number of wonderful places downtown Minneapolis has to offer — Minneapolis Convention Center, about two miles, Minneapolis Institute of Arts (& Children’s Theater) just one mile away. Bus stops are about a 5-8 minute walk in any direction. We are also minutes from the Minneapolis Greenway and now newly renovated east/west thoroughfares have wide new bike lanes. The north/south main roads have had bikes lanes for some time.

If you are here because a loved one is in the hospital, this is a great alternative to a hotel, we are about a 5 minute walk from Abbott Northwestern Hospital which connects to the whole hospital complex including Children’s.

Urban gal who loves people. I'm often drawn to what is different than myself. Besides Minneapolis, I've lived in Seattle, London, and Nairobi. I love making my house a cozy home for my guests.

During your stay

I love to share my city with others, I love hosting people and playing tour guide, but if you need downtime I can be scarce. In other words, just let me know what you need and you’ve got it.
